I think they're having problems. My SEPA deposit has taken longer than usual. Maybe increase traffic/custom from EU?

85  Economy / Marketplace / Re: 3 Bedroom 2 Bath home for Lease using Bitcoin! on: March 26, 2013, 09:04:03 PM
start renting this out for  5 bitcoin a month and watch the price in bitcoin explode as the market adapts to bitcoin

instead of the other way around

I agree. Give them a 6/12 month contract with a large discount for paying up front.

The sex trade is an example of a trade where bitcoin offers few advantages over cash as you have to meet face to face anyway.

Actually thinking about it maybe there is an advantage of plausible deniability. You can claim no cash has exchanged hands, they would have to prove you sent her the btc, and that is assuming prostitution still counts as prostitution if you pay her in btc?
87  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: MTGOX to collapse if Japan goes "the Cyprus way" ? on: March 26, 2013, 06:31:57 PM
It's more than just the exchange. A lot (perhaps the majority?) of apps and services rely on the mtgox api for pricing and such. It is still a precarious situation to be in. Bitstamp is growing for EU users, i'm not sure about US alternatives, but we need a few more exchange hubs in different jurisdictions before my mind will be set at ease.
88  Economy / Speculation / Re: 8 hours on: March 26, 2013, 06:23:03 PM
It is Wednesday, March 27, 2013 at 1:48:10 AM CST, and within 7.5 hours the price will crash.

91  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: system error: CDB() : can't open database file wallet.dat on: March 21, 2013, 10:36:56 PM
Ok i stuck an older version of my wallet in and it sync'd without error. Still my heart was in my mouth for a while! I assume that in a worst case scenario i would have been able to retrieve and export private keys to another wallet, even from a corrupt wallet.dat?

Back up your wallets.
92  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / system error: CDB() : can't open database file wallet.dat on: March 21, 2013, 05:57:39 PM
Got this error while syncing bitcoin-qt

///
system error: CDB() : can't open database file wallet.dat
///

It then closes the client.

I restarted, same again.

Thought it may have been something to do with older version of software so i copied wallet and updated to 0.8.1. dl'd the whole blockchain again and errors again @ 99.9% complete.

Is it safe to just send the coins to a new wallet while these errors are occuring?

What is causing this? A corrupted wallet.dat or something else?
93  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: And you Thought Cyprus was only Getting Hit? on: March 20, 2013, 05:48:44 PM
They're not going to tell anyone before freezing accounts, wherever in the world it's happening, for fear of a bank run. Surely that's obvious.

95  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What happens to BTC when Finra or the SEC shut down Mtgox for money laundering? on: March 17, 2013, 11:30:05 PM
BTW these forums will be one of the first things to go down if bitcoin is made illegal.
Yeah just like all those websites and forums where one can talk about illegal drugs and filesharing don't exist.  Wait a minute...

You're right. The largest forum on bitcoin is safe from all law enforcement.
96  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What happens to BTC when Finra or the SEC shut down Mtgox for money laundering? on: March 17, 2013, 06:46:49 PM
btc-e would go first.

It's going now. Without any outside influence. Can hardly ever log in.

We definately need many exchanges on every continent of the world to minimalize the impact of government shutdowns. The way MTGOX currently dominates is a slight worry, as it creates a single point of faliure, but bitstamp is catching up for EU i think.

BTW these forums will be one of the first things to go down if bitcoin is made illegal.
97  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Proposal: general move to bitcent/mBTC on: March 08, 2013, 02:30:32 AM
I think it wouldn't be beneficial using a familier monetary unit, as the values used at time of exchange will imply a loss of worth or value the higher the price of btc goes. I think some % of the general population would be put off having to spend $xx to buy a single 'bitcent', even though it's arbitrary, it's hardwired in us. At the moment $1 buys around 0.025 BTC, but it also buys 2.5 million Satoshis
98  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: What are the fees involved when selling BTC on Mt Gox? on: March 07, 2013, 11:00:16 AM
About 30% after lag
99  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Why you shouldnt use mtgox ever again on: March 07, 2013, 12:21:28 AM
They've rushed ahead with services without getting the fundamentals correct. It will hurt them in the long run
