(Von NotHaus) ... was also convicted of violating 18 USC § 486 - Uttering coins of gold, silver or other metal: Whoever ... makes ... any coins of gold or silver or other metal, ... intended for use as current money, whether in the resemblance of coins of the United States or of foreign countries, or of original design, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than five years, or both.
This could definitely be applied to Casascius coins. The prosecutor just has to convince the jury that they are intended to be used as currency. Mike, I understand that law is stupid, but I would like to know that you are aware of this and to hear your opinion. Thank you.

6) It lets you send huge sums of money overseas quickly and cheaply. If you were in US and you needed to pay $1,000,000 for a shipment from China, using normal methods of wiring money would take two or more weeks, and will cost more than $25,000 for the transaction. With Bitcoin, it takes a few hours, and costs $12,000 or less.
...
Average person don't transfer 1 mil for a shipment from China, but even if - using bitcoin the fee is nowhere near $12.000!!! For example: http://blockchain.info/tx/ed2efa807c4d33a0ca6d15aab5e608ac624a30039965b508063c8baf9d9e8eccLet's not scare average person with such high fees allegations

WTF does "intended for use as current money" mean? If me and my neighbor decide tomorrow to use between us round pieces of metal as money, are we facing jail?

I downloaded the bitcoin-0.7.1-244-g3ccb06f-win32-setup.exe, installed on my test laptop (Dual core 2GHz Intel, 2GB DDR, with XP) and, without any other extra parameters, it took ~6:40 hours to process 193395 blocks of transaction history. The cpu use was so far ~ 25%.
After this I had to restart the client (the download apparently stopped) and the cpu usage increased to ~75% (sometimes 97-99%). Later it dropped to ~65% while download speed was ~ 250 KB/s.
A new restart was needed after 9:43 hours. The download bar at the bottom of the window disappeared, hopefully this won't scare a regular user.
Finally, the block chain fully synchronized after ~13:00 hours...
I have to admit I expected a way shorter time than that.
Disclaimer: your mileage may vary.

This morning we sent a direct deposit to Wikipedia for $790.36 which is all of the bitcoin donations received from noon yesterday until this morning. Great job guys! We will continue to do this every day. I do have hope that eventually the donate button will be on Wikipedia's site, but for now having the button on our blog accomplishes the same thing.
Would be interesting to know the number of addresses (people) that donated because I feel that many chosen to give only a small amount to show that they are willing to donate more (if the button were on Wikipedia site). This number should be told to Wikipedia too, so they know there is more from where that sum came.

Government will (in the end) tax your house, your land, your car etc. and will demand BTC. You cannot hide physical property too much and they will tax it. For bitcoins!
