81  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Oddity with ripple giveaway on: March 02, 2013, 11:18:21 PM
Yes I noticed this too.  My guess is that it is every dormant sock puppet account getting activated plus I've now seen ads for people trying to buy up old forum accounts so they can get the free xrp.  I think it may be time for a new/different giveaway.
82  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: How to sell XRPs at a fair market price AND then redeem BTC IOUs back to BTCs on: February 28, 2013, 01:08:05 AM
Thanks, that is what I mostly did though I initially tried to save a step by hitting the send using ripple client button on bitstamp.  I'm still getting a potential BTC fee, looks to be 1%.  I'm guessing that is the charge to convert at the gateway?

Thanks again for the guide.

Edit:  When I actually did the transaction there wound up not being a fee.  Pretty sweet.  Thanks again.
83  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Giving x21 £0.01 of BITSTAMP Ripple credit away who wants it????? on: February 28, 2013, 01:00:50 AM
Don't even know how you would do this, but it would be fun to have something else with Ripple to play around with.
84  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Guide to selling XRPs at a fair market price on: February 27, 2013, 11:16:34 PM
This is very helpful, thank you.  However, what about the other direction, from Ripple to BTC?

I went and traded some of my XRP for BTC from Bitstamp, so now I have their BTC IOUs in my Ripple wallet.  However, when I go to Bitstamp to move them from my ripple wallet to my Bitstamp account it says I may incur a fee in BTC.  I thought the whole point of ripple was that I paid the fee to move IOUs around in XRP not BTC.  What am I missing?  It seemed high for a miners fee, e.g. > .0005, is it Bitstamp's "gateway fee" for converting their ripple BTC IOUs into BTC?

Thanks!

This is a duplicate post because it seemed to fit better here than where I originally posted it.

Just to save everyone a trip to twitter:

Bets of Bitcoin ‏@betsofbitcoin

Server is down for maintenance. We'll be back in a couple of hours.

That was six hours ago.  I hope they make it back okay.
86  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: betsofbitco.in looks down on: February 26, 2013, 10:14:16 PM
IIRC this would be the third betting site to run away with users' money.

Ouch!  I hope it is not that.  Do they post here ever?  It was a nice site and good concept and as someone fairly new to bitcoin I really enjoyed it.
87  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Anyone got the XRP? (Ripple Giveaway) on: February 25, 2013, 10:11:14 PM
Don't give up, I was post #521 and I got my 40,000 today.  It was paused over the weekend.  The point about the posting rules is a good one, just your address and only your address.

I'm getting the timed out error again.  I hope it's just me.  Great site, you may have surpassed dailybitcoins for this dust beggar!  Thanks.
89  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Ripple and Trust on: February 24, 2013, 04:19:41 PM
I've started to replace "trust" with "deposit", coupled with each of us, and each gateway, essentially functioning like an unregulated bank (IOUs = banknotes) and it all makes a lot more sense.

Of course, this is only half of it, the other half is the currency part which is also interesting.  I like the idea of giving everyone enough to last their lifetime, too bad the giveaway is suspended until Monday.

This is a great site, thank you.

I'm getting a 504 gateway time-out error, is everything okay?
91  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Why Ripple is a bad idea. on: February 23, 2013, 02:13:01 AM
So basically anyone who takes on my IOUs, its their responsibility to check the redemption agreement first and find out that the redemption is only valid for 3 months.

If someone doesn't bother to check that redemption agreement first then any financial loss is their fault for not doing their research?

Harsh, but makes sense.  You certainly have to be careful in this new Ripple world Smiley

Yes, I think this is the key.  With Ripple we can each be like banks before banking regulation, e.g. you can deposit your "gold" (e.g. BTC) in my bank in exchange for my banknotes (IOUs).  That's what trust really is in this context.  When we make a deposit in a bank, we are trusting the bank not to close in three months and run away with our money.  So ripple essentially lets each of us be a bank.  So if you trust me, e.g. deposit money in my bank, you risk me "failing."

I am a newb and may be totally off, but this is a lot like what it sounds like reading the wiki and the various threads.  What makes it extra confusing is the parallel currency that is used to "pay" for our IOU transactions.

This is a really nice faucet and as someone new to both BTC and LTC I really appreciate it.  Thank you.

I do have one question though.  When I go to check my address [LMKuihW2dvWCnLzzaVgUYmAXMWahMQh6jy] it shows that I was paid ~.008 of a LTC but no LTC have actually showed up in my wallet despite being fully up to date with the blockchain.  Is this because the amount is so low?

I'm not complaining, you are giving away free LTC after all, just curious.  Thanks again!

I admit, I had not posted because I figured you had to stop because this is such a nice offer.

96  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: We shouldn't be recommending the Satoshi client to new users on: December 16, 2012, 07:34:51 PM
I agree that there could be a better starting point.  Logistical issues with the client kept me out of Bitcoin for awhile, I thought I needed it to get started - it is the client after all - but you really don't.  Of course, the key issue is what do you recommend instead?  Blockchain.info wallet?  It at least points you to satoshi dice.  Smiley

BCB you are the man!  Really impressive, thanks for being one of the good guys!
99  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: CoinAd - Free Coins every single day. on: November 04, 2012, 10:03:38 PM

They're not lost, they're still in my hand, which means, better prizes the next day.

Carlos you are giving me free money, so I am reluctant to be critical, in fact the most important thing to say is thank you, so thank you.

However, if the goal is to encourage people to visit then I would try and figure out some creative way to recycle the "unclaimed" prizes in a random way.  If you don't then there isn't any reason for anyone to visit coinad except for the four to five minutes per hour when you are offering a bonus prize.  Surely that is not optimal for you to make back your investment.

Regardless, thanks for trying to help people who are new to Bitcoin.

msweb, I bow to your fast fingers, you 2 (or 3?) SRG 0 on the .05 prizes! Nice going!
100  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: FREE BITCOINS at www.bitcoin4you.net on: November 04, 2012, 07:35:48 PM
Just so I am clear, it's up to .0001 BTC (.1 mBTC) for each page viewed, but you have to get to .005 BTC to cash out, correct?
