1. Bitcoin is the local currency. So you aren't buying bitcoins, you're selling PayPal dollars.
2. Good luck dude, there's a reason BitcoinMarket just suspended the PayPal market. The guy who scammed me had good eBay feedback too. Just suck it up and sign up with Dwolla.
3. What's a hardcore libertarian doing at a state-funded school anyway? I assume you're at least paying out of pocket and not through a federally-funded loan?

If you can't afford a bitcoin for $100, you can still afford 0.01 bitcoins for $1.

What I can do is fix a price with you now, to be filled in a week or two when you get money into Dwolla or Mt Gox. That way you won't be trampled by more price increases. But I'm not really interested in selling at the current price, so there'll be a markup.
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1
For $100 I will sell you, eternalcold, 5.264 bitcoins. That comes out to about $19.00 each. You have until 22:00 UTC to accept this deal, at which point I'll put the bitcoins in escrow at ClearCoin. You'll then have until June 18 to make payment via Dwolla, Mt Gox, or BitcoinMarket.
If you miss the deadline for acceptance, I may make another one depending on the state of the market at that point.
If you accept this offer, PM me. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.2 (MingW32)

Hi there! You don't have to introduce yourself, but you don't have to not introduce yourself either. (The first message board I participated in actually asked people to please not post intro threads, which kind of made sense to me... but seems to be the opposite of what everyone else wants.)
The way I bought my first bitcoins wasn't by going through Mt Gox or Dwolla, but by finding someone on the forums to trade with me. If you go to the Marketplace or to #bitcoin-otc and offer a price, you may just find a taker.
|
|
|
Try #bitcoin-otc in IRC, maybe someone will take the trade there.
|
|
|
I may be interested, depending on the price at the time, but I won't be in Boston until next weekend. PM me Friday if you haven't gotten another offer since then.
BTW this post should really be under selling, since the currency of the forum is bitcoins and that's what you're trying to get.

Update: There is no way I'm getting my PayPal dollars back. Thus the reward is definitely 5 BTC.
I've gotten some useful information, but all of it requires me to do the legwork of tracking this guy down. I still don't have a name (though "Barry Doyle" is a good guess), an address, or a phone number, let alone all three.
Here's some more information that may help you out: b4rrydoyle's login history on BitcoinMarket.

I and several others have been scammed by the same user. So I started a thread in which I am offering a 5 BTC reward for his identity. There's already some good, though incomplete information. If you and others scammed add to this reward, I bet someone will be interested enough, and skilled enough at "finding people", to do this. ETA: You may want to write Dustin about retracting/replacing your feedback. He already knows about this guy, so he'll probably be quite accomodating. ETA: Don't worry too much about PayPal. There's nothing you can do to recover your money from them, since the claim is account fraud and not failure to deliver. Interesting that they ask you for evidence regardless.

I'd like to move about $200 Mt Gox to BitcoinMarket. Is anyone willing to make an exchange?
|
|

You MUST have a GREAT rep on this forum site - I will not risk it with anyone less....
Risk what? Bitcoin payments are absolutely irreversible, while Paypal payments are reversible whenever the payer feels like it.

Not at home right now, I'll have to check all this info out later. If anyone wabts to contribute BTC, they can just send them to my tip address.

Edit: You are sun avatar right cause if not then I don't know if you're nice or not lol
That's me, thanks for remembering!

I will pay 5 BTC to the first person who tells me the full name, home address, and telephone number of b4rrydoyle on Bitcoin Market. He owes me either 30 BTC or 500 USD. This offer is lowered to 1 BTC in the event that I ever actually get my PayPal dollars---or 0 BTC in the event that you are b4rrydoyle. I have the following information to start with: Buyer ID 5184 Uses choupex@yahoo.frUses pierre.chabot@laposte.net (but this may be a stolen account) BitcoinMarket login history: 19913 5184 93.96.21.223 Succeeded 2011-06-02 19:15:25 20041 5184 82.22.253.146 Failed 2011-06-02 20:12:22 20044 5184 82.22.253.146 Succeeded 2011-06-02 20:12:40 21033 5184 80.7.151.74 Failed 2011-06-03 09:36:20 21034 5184 80.7.151.74 Succeeded 2011-06-03 09:36:50 21069 5184 80.7.151.74 Succeeded 2011-06-03 10:13:24 21515 5184 82.255.162.61 Succeeded 2011-06-03 15:47:56 21819 5184 82.255.162.61 Succeeded 2011-06-03 19:17:23 23760 5184 217.23.3.57 Failed 2011-06-04 12:03:02 23762 5184 217.23.3.57 Failed 2011-06-04 12:03:20 23763 5184 217.23.3.57 Failed 2011-06-04 12:03:33

I'm pretty sure I've been scammed out of 30 BTC on BitcoinMarket by b4rrydoyle. I made three trades of 10 BTC for PPUSD, and b4rrydoyle immediately ordered a fourth. I asked him to provide some identifying information before I continued, and shortly thereafter all four payments were held by PayPal pending investigation of an unauthorized account activity claim. Knowing PayPal, I don't hold out much hope of ever seeing the money. I've contacted Dustin in hopes that he can help me identify the perp. Listed email address is choupex@yahoo.fr. I will offer a 5 BTC reward to anyone who can verifiably get me this person's real name, home address, and telephone number.

Getting bitcoins via PayPal is tricky, because it's easy to request a chargeback and PayPal will treat the payee as guilty until proven innocent. By contrast bitcoins are impossible to charge back, so that sort of exchange requires some trust, which you don't yet have. You could create an account on BitcoinMarket, where you can easily sell PayPal USD for BTC, but you haven't done so---which makes you look a bit suspicious. You'll have to pay a pretty hefty surcharge to cover the risk.
For example: I'll trade with you at an exchange rate of 1 BTC = 17 PPUSD, up to 20 bitcoins. PM me if you're interested.
If you don't think the surcharge is worth it and you don't want to wait for money to go from your bank to Dwolla to Mt Gox, there are other ways. For example, you could try to settle a price with someone now, to be paid whenever you get your Mt Gox dollars. Or you could just set up with BitcoinMarket, where the exchange rate is still a bit high but not as high as 17.

Hmm. Is it too soon to start thinking in satoshi?
1 US dollar = 0.07 bitcoins = 7,000,000 satoshi.
1 Japanese yen = 0.0009 bitcoins = 90,000 satoshi.
It seems like a lot, but really it wasn't that long ago that a pizza cost 10,000 bitcoins, and I don't think anyone found that confusing.

Oh, I assumed it worked like the others. Thanks for the help, have a tip!

I have some bitcoins on BitcoinMarket and I'd like to exchange them for BMUSD. But I just can't find a place to do this.
When I click "Accept an existing order" I see the following tabs:
BMBTC/LRUSD | BMBTC/MBUSD | BMBTC/MLUSD | BMBTC/PPUSD | BMBTC/PXGAU
But no BMBTC/BMUSD. I do have the option to create a new order for BMBTC/BMUSD, but I'd rather look at what's already available. How do I do that?

For a second I was thinking of silver quarters for 0.25 bitcoins and I thought that was pretty awesome.
I'll keep an eye here, maybe I'll buy some.
