8141  Economy / Reputation / Re: Ledger wallet paid campaign in bitcointalk forum? on: November 25, 2020, 01:28:07 PM
I kinda doubt it. They are one of the two most recommended hardware wallet makers so they don't really need more advertising. They also pay for affiliate links, but I didn't see many here (but I didn't also check specifically for that).

Although their (wallet) software is bad, although their shop software was hacked, although they could have been fixing some vulnerabilities faster, although they prefer to add support for whatever unknown altcoins instead of making a better wallet for the newbies, ... the actual hardware works good. So for example a Ledger customer who is using a Nano with Electrum (my case) is content and will probably tell this forward (more probably than advertising a HW I've never seen in my life). Of course I also advise to keep on HW only current expense funds.

However, I am curious of what will they reply (if ever). Maybe I'm wrong...

PS. @sujonali1819 I think that OP is asking about current (2020) promotions; 2014 was too long ago.
8142  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Is this the end of Monero? on: November 25, 2020, 09:34:48 AM
Interesting timing for the more and more "persuasive" news about Monero's death.
You know that in a couple of days Monero's emission will drop under Bitcoin's? And since crypto winter has ended, I'd say that somebody wants to grab cheap coins while they stay cheap.

I think that Monero tracking may be done only in very few specific situations (laboratory specific tests), and those situations don't happen much (or at all) "in the wild", but a company needs advertising, isn't it?
8143  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoin will increase 20X in the next 5 years on: November 25, 2020, 09:24:12 AM
The first "ATH" I've experienced* was around 1200$ at the end of 2013.
The following crypto winter made it fall 6x, to 200$ levels.

2017 started with 1000$ price and the new ATH was almost 20k (20x growth)

The new crypto winter got us to some 3100$ (6.5x fall)

Now we are back to almost 20k again and since we, humans, just love to find patterns, we obviously expect a new 20x (ish) ATH, hence 400k.
Of course, although people say that history repeats itself, it doesn't do everything in the same way (and doesn't repeat itself when we want it to), so... we'll have to wait and see.

* That ATH made me get into crypto, so I don't know much more than the price tag.
8144  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: $WAVES to hit $10 price soon? on: November 25, 2020, 08:04:23 AM
I think that looking at USD price doesn't tell the full story.
Even if we don't take into account the 2017 prices, Waves still was at 0.001BTC. Now it's under 0.00039BTC.
So it's only partly recovering. Still a long way to go.

Yes, the development has helped (I think that the development was too slow for long periods of time). Most probably DeFi helped too. The advertising on Russian elections may have helped too. But again, there's still long way to go. For now Bitcoin was more profitable, which doesn't look so great.
8145  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: It is fine to support Bitcoin Cash. on: November 25, 2020, 07:48:28 AM
We don't all like paying high fees. Paying $10 to send a transaction is extremely high especially to people in poor countries..

Nobody stops you from using Dogecoin, for example. At least it would be a proper and honest coin.

This forum is filled with a lot of toxic bitcoin maximalists.

...and also a lot of toxic BCash-ers.  Smiley
You seem to forget too easy that there are plenty of altcoins.

Fun fact: Bitcoin maximalists most probably has Altcoin Discussions board on ignore.  Grin

Remember newbies that Bitcoin Cash has MANY advantages over Bitcoin.

Everybody, please do proper research before investing in anything, no matter who is advertising it.
8146  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Electrum transfer sent, confirmed, green ticked, but not arrived in other wallet on: November 24, 2020, 11:53:11 AM
4 - Clipboard malware
5 - "Friend" wallet is on a custodial service that has bugs
6 - "Friend" is actually a scammer

And I guess that the list can keep growing.
But let's wait for some answers, else we may scare OP when it may not be the case.
8147  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Electrum transfer sent, confirmed, green ticked, but not arrived in other wallet on: November 24, 2020, 11:15:50 AM
Can you post the tx id so people can take a look on a blockchain explorer?
The first thing to do is to check the transaction: if it's really confirmed, where was it sent to. Then maybe recheck (with your friend?) if the recipient of those funds is the expected address and it is part of the friend's wallet.
8148  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Service Discussion (Altcoins) / Re: I suggest raising the topic of bounty companies!!! on: November 24, 2020, 09:26:11 AM
It was discussed many times before. It's you who has to do your homework and don't jump head first into any bounty campaign. It's you who has to research about the company you are advertising.

Until some 3 weeks ago I was part of a bounty campaign that did pay in their own token, but the payments were always on time (although monthly) and easy to convert into BTC or ETH (although they were made in their own token). So it can be done properly too, if the project owners are honest. Of course, I've done quite some research before joining there.

If you are focused on altcoins, I suggest you bookmark and follow this thread: Safe Campaigns in the Altcoin section to join. Dont waste your time with others
8149  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: [WARNING]FAKE ELECTRUM WALLET on: November 24, 2020, 08:31:06 AM
I still don't think storing Bitcoins on a phone is safer than using the non-custodial wallets like CoinBase, etc for newbies at least.

I always advise hardware wallet when using Bitcoin with phone.
But afaik Electrum on Android still cannot handle hardware wallet, unfortunately.
Still, for small amounts, one can use it as it is, at least he can have better control over the tx fees, I guess.
8150  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Binance must have an option to instant sell with 1% of stop loss on: November 24, 2020, 08:07:48 AM
If you are so scared that a 1% change will cause you to panic, I recommend that you stay away from investing in cryptocurrencies.

Exactly. Such a feature is not useful now and will most probably not be in the next 5 years.
However, you can ask their help desk or also ask on Binance's or CZ's twitter.

Maybe they'll do it, maybe they'll explain why not, or maybe they'll ignore you. You don't know until you ask... somewhere they actually read it.
8151  Economy / Economics / Re: Bitcoin retirement account on: November 24, 2020, 07:32:55 AM
What do you people think about bitcoin retirement accounts? I think it is cool and can also increase bitcoin adoption.

Bitcoin price is volatile. Elderly hearths may not handle that too well.
So although on paper it sounds nice (adoption, handling taxes and conversions), it's not OK as solely Bitcoin based fund.

Also, Bitcoiners can make a 100% Bitcoin "fund" themselves ("be your own bank" & "not your keys, not your coins").

So I think that for this job a super diversified fund with also Bitcoin in it is a better option. Much smaller growth, but always growing. Sorry.
8152  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: [WARNING]FAKE ELECTRUM WALLET on: November 24, 2020, 07:21:24 AM
users can download the .apk file from the Electrum.org website just like they download the desktop binaries and verify the signature

Indeed, this is the best option.
And for the lazy ones, also on electrum.org, near the Android downloads, there's the link to Google play for the correct wallet.

The most important rule is that (almost) anything else is better than blindly search on Google play.
8153  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Paypal is in cahoots with the government to seize your bitcoin on: November 24, 2020, 06:56:40 AM
they will take users BTC, but will process merchant transactions with fiat

PayPal business model is based on fiat and will not change.
Right now they don't work at all with Bitcoin, they work with IOUs they call Bitcoin and most probably that's what they'll always have.
At some point (next year?) they may integrate with a Bitcoin trading platform which will interact on behalf of PayPal with the actual blockchain.

At least this is what I understood about PayPal Bitcoin "story", but I didn't go to that link (does it change anything?).

PayPal doesn't care about Bitcoin. They just want some more profit. The only good thing for us is the advertising they bring. Sooner or later their users will get proper Bitcoin (I hope) from proper exchanges.
8154  Economy / Currency exchange / Re: places to store btc on: November 23, 2020, 09:50:37 PM
@NeuroticFish I am still looking at options on what to do I am thinking of a hard wallet but worried about it breaking

When you initialise the hardware wallet, you'll create a seed made of (usually) 24 English words which you are required to write down onto paper.

If the wallet breaks you'll still be able to access/spend your coins by initialising another wallet (hardware or software) with that same seed words. (Of course, a new hardware wallet is recommended)

But unless you live in strangely humid environment or you are overly careless, the hardware wallet should not break.
8155  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Unconfirmed transaction on: November 23, 2020, 06:58:49 PM
Hi, how i can confirm my tx for free ? So far waiting +8h for confirmation.

If you made the tx with Electrum and had the RBF flag on, use Electrum, it has better chance to work.
If you paid more than 10 sat/byte (I think) then ViaBTC tool may accept your tx, but I didn't use it for long time and the free part use to be crowded. https://www.viabtc.com/tools/txaccelerator
8156  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Pi network - KYC is needed to use it! on: November 23, 2020, 05:57:07 PM
What's you take on Pi network?

There were plenty of signals that Pi is "too good to be true" and it'll turn out to be, in a way or another, a scam.
I fear that KYC may be only the first step in making people earn nothing from the time they've spent acquiring those coins.
8157  Economy / Currency exchange / Re: places to store btc on: November 23, 2020, 05:34:33 PM
I have bought and stored crypto on coinbase since I started but now am thinking of leaving them and looking for alternatives
While I might try and set up my own key I am looking at other trusted places to store my BTC without the need for KYC or ID if possible.

One option I am looking at is  Nexo or BlockFi or similar place so I can earn interest on my BTC
is there any other alternatives or what do you suggest

You should make up your mind. Do you want to store safely your coins or you want them to earn some interest for you?
I personally advise against the interest part, since the received value is too small compared to the risks. All exchanges are targeted by hackers.

The correct way to "store" bitcoin for long term is to have a wallet that never again goes online.
Of course, you'll have to learn your way so you can generate such a wallet safely, but then you'll be good.
Or, if you are not tech savvy, get yourself a hardware wallet and put your coins onto it.

8158  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Where do I start with bitcoin transactions? on: November 23, 2020, 08:33:49 AM
how would I actually do that from scratch?

If you want to understand transactions as an user, I think that easiest is to play on testnet. That's a "test" blockchain for Bitcoin and the coins have no value hence you can get for free, from faucets, enough coins for your tests.

1. Install a simple wallet, like Electrum (make sure you download it from electrum.org; it would be also nice you verify the signature for when you work with real coins https://bitcoinelectrum.com/how-to-verify-your-electrum-download/).
2. Run it with --testnet parameter so you run on a test blockchain with free coins ( https://bitcoin.stackexchange.com/questions/76598/how-to-get-electrum-3-1-3-on-bitcoin-testnet )
3. Create yourself a new wallet, get some free testnet coins from a testnet faucet (use a search engine, make sure you search for bitcoin testnet faucet and don't worry if not all the faucets actually work, just find one that actually send you coins)
4. Create yourself second a new wallet (also on testnet)
5. Make transactions between your wallets and also inside the same wallet.
6. Look up the addresses and transactions also on a testnet block explorer ( https://live.blockcypher.com/btc-testnet/ )
7. When you understood it all, send your remaining coins to the faucet.
8159  Economy / Economics / Re: Will Crypto live forever or die? on: November 22, 2020, 06:01:05 PM
I am asking that question because there is a possible World WAR

Do you genuinely care about Bitcoin and crypto or you just wanted people read your propaganda?

Will Crypto live forever or die?

As long as internet survives, most probably the useful cryptos will survive (many projects die because they're bad or scam, that's not the point here).
However, "forever is a long time" as somebody said. I don't expect Earth or human kind survive forever. So I guess that the internet related answer covers pretty much what we need.
8160  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Rumours that Bitcoin was created in Russia on: November 22, 2020, 05:56:21 PM
Why did the Japan based Satoshi need to use St Petersburg IP location then?

Afaik nobody knows where was Satoshi based. Do you know how does ToR work? Did you care to read?

Its no matter who created but more why?

Most probably for the same reason he left before getting too popular.

~ conspiracy theory logic ~

You spend too much valuable time with thrash news. Sorry, I don't care about that.
