8361  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Electrum problem on: November 24, 2014, 09:40:39 AM
It's running but i can't open it.
It seems offline.

try

alt + space
m or whatever your shortcut for move is, you can test that e.g. on a explorer window
and hold the left arrow button down.

Sometimes the window spawns in the area outside of your screen to the right for some reason.
8362  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Safe Sites on: November 24, 2014, 08:53:29 AM
Anyone use http://bitcoin-generator.net/ or https://freebitco.in/. If so are they safe? Freebitco looks shifty but Undecided

The "bitcoin-generator" is most likely malware. It has all the signs:
- vague explanation of how it works
- fake security certifitcate
- likewall - need to like before you can do anything or wait X seconds
- makes you download software. I will not go through all the hassle to actualy verify its a virus, if you do check it on virustotal before you download.
- links to Mt. Gox

Freebitco.in is legit AFAIK, but its a faucet which has its own downsides. You get paid insignifcant amounts for enormous time wasted to watch advertisements. And in the end you might have to many inputs to even make a usefull bitcoin transaction.

I overdosed this forum and became a moderator.

What did you give it? Did it end up the hospital?
8365  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: High transfer fee of a transation on: November 23, 2014, 11:24:41 AM
Yes your coins are still safe and your wallet has the private key for 1Gv8BwKX9sLusY65DBiJbFL4wBffHPFuG4

A good indicator for this is if your balance is what it should be, as in -1 and not -1.25...

Which software are you using?

Edit:

The way bitcoin works is that you have to spend each input entirely. You can think of it as lumps of gold. In the past you got a 1.25 btc lump. If you want to spend parts of it, you have to melt the whole 1.25 btc and create new lumps. One with 1 btc for the other party and the rest .25 for yourself.
I rounded and ignored fees in this example in order to make it easier to understand.

8366  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: High transfer fee of a transation on: November 23, 2014, 11:10:55 AM
TX fee is not paid that way. The fee is (sum of inputs) - (sum of outputs)

Its change, depending on the wallet/service you use its a newly generated address under your control or an old one.

8371  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Bitcoin-Qt taking ages to load on: November 22, 2014, 11:34:24 AM
I don't usually cask for technical support here since I can figure most stuff out on my own, but after serching for a solution for quite some time I figured that there weren't any discussions about this issue.

So the problem I'm facing is that the bitcoin core waller I'm running at my home, windows 7 computer takes a lot of time to load, some times even 2 to 3 minutes. It used to open alot faster at some point. So first of all is this normal? Is there any way to speed up the proccess of opening the wallet?

hum..
if you do not use QT-Wallet for BTC solo miningi [  Shocked  Shocked  Shocked ] i think you can run wallet without %AppData%Roaming\Bitcoin\.
nodes are hard coded in the assembly...
i load wallet in 15/20 sec without conf file....

please stop posting BS in old posts.

It can load fast on a fast machine, but not everyone is using the same setup.

Please link me to the hardcoded IPs in the source.

Also to your other post: the torrent does not take seconds to download or verifiy. On a fast machine it still takes hours.

You are not helping with posts like these. Keep your guessing and unsupported claims to the appropriate sections like speculation and politics & society.

thanks.
8372  Other / Meta / Re: Why can't I delete my own topic where none posted in? on: November 22, 2014, 09:52:00 AM
some sections do not allow it, but you can allways close it.
8373  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: download bitcoin.org problems on: November 22, 2014, 09:34:05 AM
Got to a Pointo of synchronizing stuck a 3 years 13 weeks behind..says  No block source available..stupid question but now I'm connected to Google Chrome and it's been stuck for a day, should I have tor running instead?

I doubt you are connected to google chrome.

#1 Chill, Tor will not help, it will slow things down.

Should I log into tor browser first?

No, nothing you can do on a browser will help bitcoin sync faster. Well unless asking questions here maybe.

How do I enter different ip addy to try to find connection, I have none.

The IP to sync with is not the (frist) problem to solve.

I am not real computer literate but I could use a step by step on how to fix this...I followed all the instructions step by step, was 5 years back, got to 3 years 13 days..stuck here for twork days and says no block source available..the green is still glowing in and out in the bar at bottom...I sure could use some help...please

Syncing takes time. This will be fixed better in one of the next patches, at least thats what we hope.

Ok lets get to the sync faster guide:

#0 understand why you want bitcoin core. This might not be the right wallet for you, there are other wallets that do not need to sync and offer the same level of security. Start here [1]

#1 if you want bitcoin core, download the data torrent it will download a huge bootstrap.dat you just put in the same folder where your wallet.dat is. Make sure you have ~twice the size of the blockchain on that HD free as the bootstrap will take >20 Gigs and the blockchain data itself will also take >20 Gigs of space. The torrent file and more info can be found here [2]

#2 connect to a fast node for the rest of the way. Usually you do this by starting bitcoin core with the option -connect=IP
E.g. c:\Program Files\Bitcoin\bitcoin-qt.exe -connect=IP from windows run (Win + R) or bitcoin-qt -connect=IP from linux terminal (you might have to cd into the correct folder [3] and run with ./bitcoin-qt -connect=IP)

Dont skip the torrent part. No dot just connect to one of these nodes. Its very nice of them to even give me the data as this might put heavy trefficload on the servers and the torrent is faster. Bitcoin-core will have to analyse and verify the downloaded data, but thats also the case if you sync over the network and its only limited by your hardware.

List of fast nodes:

my os is windows 8.1 and i dont know much about bitcoin or nodes you are talking about can you please explain me about the nodes or how i can fix this problem Smiley
thank you.

#1 Press "WindowsKey + R" it will open a window like this

#2 enter c:\Program Files\Bitcoin\bitcoin-qt.exe -connect=84.200.34.113 in the "Open:" line

You might have to change the path if you installed Bitcoin somewhere else. And you might need to change the IP depending on your location. I used the first in the list. (see below)

#3 press ok

#4 wait till you are synced

#5 shutdown bitcoin core

#6 start the way you usually do.

hope this helps.

I had a raffle script that uses blockhashes as seed once. Turned out that /dev/urandom is a better source for randomness.

Jeder fängt mal an.

8377  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: So I pressed reset settings and now the blockchain is loading again... on: November 22, 2014, 08:49:55 AM
I doubt that these settings are stored in the bitcoin.conf as this file is not existant by default and has to be created by the user.

I did a bit of digging in the source. I started at the button pressed [1] and ended up at the walletmodel.cpp [2] which stores your "cached balance" (among other data). Thus I still think my initial hunch is correct. OP is not redownloading, but rescanning the locally available blockchain.

3 clicks (Help -> Debug Window -> Network Traffic) should confirm this.

8378  Local / Anfänger und Hilfe / Re: jedes mal neue Adresse? on: November 21, 2014, 10:33:43 PM

Naja, kommt drauf an.

8379  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: ATTENTION! Dangerous situation with unconfirmed transactions! on: November 21, 2014, 09:01:42 PM
Transactions without fees get confirmed all the time, they just take longer.
Idiots like the person behind this are the reason why you should never accept a TX without at least X confirmations where X is > 0.

They might confirm within a week or two.

Not necessarily - I had some issues in the past where I got dust sent to my address that I utilize with Blockchain causing me so "bloat".  I then sent some BTC based on the regular fees (not the bloated size) to a friend and it would not confirm, after 4 days of not confirming it came back to me, had this happened where he sent me something on 0 confirms I would have prospered.

"it came back to me" is how blockchain.info handles it. If you use bitcoin core it will broadcast the transcation until it gets confirmed. Given enough time its priority will be high enough and the TX will get confirmed. 1 BTC and 1 day waiting is fine for a feeless TX. In this case a little over 1000 days should be enough.

This is not practical granted, but I dont see a reason for panic as the OP seems to. Just dont accept a TX as paid unless there is a confirmation (more than 1 for higher values TX). If this would be a local cash deal, Id be gone with my money allready and would never trade with that person again.

Edit: I wonder if its something like this [1]
