And try not to twist your own words

huh?  this is all you do.

...
the thing is, the current pricing is dropping as i predicted a long time ago for asics in general which can only be good for miners.  these prices are extraordinary and i myself may have to order more.  this is going to keep the network decentralized and solo mining still affordable.  once the BTC price starts ascending again, which it will, those asic manufacturers with the most efficient chips are going to cause a shakeout in this industry.

ORLY? You predicted the price of ASICs would drop?  The rest of us were thinking that ASIC prices would skyrocket as the difficulty increased exponentially.  But you actually seen this coming, huh...

as a matter of fact i did.

many of my subscribers here can attest to that prediction which i've continually stressed ever since the beginning of this race last year.  i'm not surprised you missed it.

point being, this makes it possible for small players to stay in the game, if not for fat profits, at least to support the network.

Did anyone, and i mean anyone, actually think the ASIC prices would *increase over time*Huh  Who?

And try not to twist your own words, spindoc.  You didn't say hobby mine -- you said "SOLO mine." Angry Cheesy
Edit:  Bold red text, see?

at $6/GH and more likely $4.8/GH i'd say that's pretty affordable.  at least better than anyone else.

https://hashfast.com/the-baby-jet-controller/

this is a great solution.  this makes me very happy as it will fit nicely into the solo mining configuration i currently have set up.

i'm looking forward to harnessing the power of 10 BJ's.  maybe 50 if and when MPP kicks in.

Well, I mailed them and got this reply:

Quote from: sales@hashfast.com
In regards to your questions below, we are unable to cancel your current order as we have already ordered the hardware that will be required to assemble your unit. What Simon mentioned, was an upgrade we are hoping to announce *very* shortly that is only for the Batch 1 Baby Jet customers. This will be for folks that wish to upgrade their system while keeping their current place in line and still 4 weeks ahead of the shipping of our Sierra's.

It seems to refer to the special promotion you mentioned in an earlier message. At least they didn't ask for 10% to trade the order. Wink

Come on guys, really? There must be a new get-rich-quick bestseller around.

the problem is, they are not getting rich right now off of anyone.

everything they're bringing in they are plowing back into making this a reality, ie, the best miner available in the market.  like i've said many times before, i am very excited about the design of the BJ and Sierra.  using OEM parts and being modular, i expect my own large order of BJ's to make an acceptable ROI for quite a while.
8366  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: HashFast launches sales of the Baby Jet on: September 23, 2013, 09:16:06 PM
HURRY HURRY HURRY AND PAY! Delivery is guaranteed by the 28th of February. Roll Eyes

That's right CX, you need to hurry up and get on the HashFast train before it leaves the station.

HashFast is offering the most bang/buck and you're going to regret mocking them instead of ordering on-sale Sierras.

meh.

I'd be all over it if they'd guarantee delivery before January 31, 2014. They do not, so I am not. How about December 15? for a product they claim will be ready in November? How is that asking too much? Why should I be confident in their ability to deliver in a timely fashion if they are not?

Sick to death of these pre-order gimmicks to gather up 0% interest financing all the time. Don't these guys have enough funding YET to produce a product and THEN offer it for sale? They could instantly distinguish themselves by simply behaving like a retailer instead of a vapor peddler.

You have to do your own research and make the determination which pre-orders are legit and which are sketchy.

Lumping all ASIC vendors together with BFL and Avalon is lazy, wrong, and hurts your investors.

The evidence that HashFast is miles ahead of the competition is readily available, should you make the effort to peruse it.

Their chips are not vapor, they are currently being deposited layer by layer on a wafers at TSMC and will be ready next month.

Did you miss the thread where cypherdoc dispelled the FUD with a full endorsement?

indeed.  i have met with them, talked with their engineers, and viewed detailed plans.  they are legit.

while this runup in the hashrate is concerning for everyone including HF, they are furiously working hard to deliver on time.  the chips are indeed being rocketed thru TSMC and should be delivered in October.

i am excited by the Golden Nonce chip design.  thermal controls will help prevent frying of your investment and the cooling system tests have been very positive.  in fact, initial cooling estimates have been exceeded which should allow overclocking to 500GH/s or beyond.  no promises though, of course.

the thing is, the current pricing is dropping as i predicted a long time ago for asics in general which can only be good for miners.  these prices are extraordinary and i myself may have to order more.  this is going to keep the network decentralized and solo mining still affordable.  once the BTC price starts ascending again, which it will, those asic manufacturers with the most efficient chips are going to cause a shakeout in this industry.

8368  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Coin melting: how hide transactions from network analysis on: September 22, 2013, 04:02:02 PM
Such melting can't be done safely by a small pool, coz a bigger pool can make an attempt to "remine" the block and collect the fees by itself.

So... why doesn't the "bigger pool" attempt to "remine" regular blocks worth a mere 25 bitcoins each?

Coz next blocks give 25 BTC as well.

Regards, your Captain Obvious.

Well... they can "remine" that one as well? And the one after that? And so on?

Every time a block is orphaned, somebody has remined that block.

i just had a solo mined block orphaned for the first time.  annoying as hell.

how does that happen and how do i check the logs (ubuntu) to analyze what happened?
8369  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: On a panel with MasterCard and Visa on: September 22, 2013, 03:22:35 PM
The event started better than expected: The second speaker a partner from Deloitte demonstrated his knowledge of cutting edge technologies by asking the crowd (it was about 150 people) if they heard the name Satoshi Nakamoto. I was one out of 4 who raised a hand. At the end of his speech he had a slide exemplifying Bitcoin as real innovation to watch out for. I talked to him in the pause, but figured that he had only a rather shallow understanding of what Bitcoin is, but who cares, recognizing it as a disruptive innovation is the right first step.

The next talks were rather boring about online-banking innovations and security of banking applications. Innovations they were touting paled in comparison to Bitcoin, but they did not seem to know yet.

The final panel was the one I participated. It was preceded by a talk of the head of regulations department of the national bank (comparable to FinCen that operates within the national bank in Hungary). He spent quite a few minutes explaining why cash is bad for the economy and what benefits more frequent electronic payments would bring on national scale. I used this to catch him in the pause and telling him that cash and electronic payments is not a contradiction but Bitcoin is electronic cash. He got interested, so I have an invite to his office Smiley

My panel was with local MDs of Visa and MasterCard and a company launching a mobile wallet in cooperation with them that enables credit card payments via NFC. I managed to go over couple of arguments you shared with me. Let me draft the most notable exchanges:

They called NFC payment a breakthrough innovation, even a butterfly moment. I made the point that changing the infrastructure behind the payments is likely a bigger a breakthrough than the difference between sliding a plastic card into a slot vs. waving the mobile phone over the slot. The MasterCard guy said that the biggest obstacle in introducing a new payment method is gaining trust that they successfully established, I countered that people likely trust even more mathematics than them. They said in 5 years we will have majority using mobile payments with NFC, I said in 5 years we will no longer talk about innovation in payments but settlement of financial instruments and rights via technologies that learned from the Bitcoin network.

Close to the end the audience could vote (with a voting machine) on the question of what they see is future of payments is and a staggering 11% voted for Bitcoin (alternatives were credit card, mobile, bank transfer and cash payments)

I think that is as good as I could possibly get it, considering that only 2.6% new Satoshi's name at the begin of the conference.

Congratulations.

That is a good result as an absolute value and as a relative value from beginning to end.
8370  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How to pass on bitcoins to your children/beneficiaries on: September 22, 2013, 12:01:18 PM
Guys.. Have you looked at https://deadmansapphr.appspot.com/ ?

That's exactly what I have set up. There are alternative services.

The key is, use GPG encryption. Then the provider can never read the email.

If you use gmail or google accounts, you can also use their inactive account manager.
https://www.google.com/settings/u/0/account/inactive

Ok, both are free. (dead man's switch has a paid version if you want to send more than 2 emails.)

Are attachments encrypted when using pgp or should one put the contents of an attachment into the message body instead?

Did you attach a wallet to your pgp message if indeed attachments are encrypted, or did you have to put the private keys into the message body?

How confident are you with PGP now given the recent NSA revelations since you know they are sweeping up pgp emails for later scrutiny?

How confident are you that your kids will keep their public/private key pair safe  and sound?  Will they remember their passwords?

Will Deadman be around in 25 years?

Lol, Greg didn't want to acknowledge Bitcoin, did he?

she kept mentioning it and he kept ignoring it.

Absolutely... that guy is so fixated on his gold and his doom and gloom scenario that he can't seem to think clearly. Like with so many gold bugs, the word "Bitcoin" activates his animal brain, prepares his body fluids for fight or flight and shuts off his rational clear thinker. I wouldn't be surprised if he shit his pants in the process. Lol.

I think Mrs. Hudes is correct in saying that gold should really be viewed as an insurance, not an investment. The world will come up with a better solution. Gold is local, the economy is global. Having to go back to gold as money would mean having to go back to a local economy with severe implications. We really don't want to go there. Even if you're one of the "wealthy" individuals and you might increase your likelyhood to survive a bit because of your gold (it might well be the other way around, too, if you don't have weapons but others do), noone should really be looking forward to such a scenario. We must avoid this.

Well: Bitcoin to the rescue!

great minds think alike.

"severe implications" = "armageddon".

it doesn't have to be that way given the available alternatives.

sure, i could say i didn't wipe my ass after taking a shit this morning but what would be the odds of that?

this un-taper one was especially suspicious given the poll on September 6 in which 13 of 18 dealers forecast a taper in purchases would be announced at Wednesday's meeting.

you know there's a problem simply by the fact that ALL asset classes moved inversely to the USD.

after the announcement, USD down, everything else up.  everything.  everything except Bitcoin interesting enough.

Bitcoin users not affected?

absolutely ridiculous and indicates that this world of ours is responding economically only to Fed pumping.
8379  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Are deterministic wallets more secure than random wallets ? on: September 19, 2013, 08:35:30 PM
please explain.

I did.  The entire rest of my post explains your confusion and attempts to straighten it out for you.

Specifically you say:

in Mycelium's case are you talking about their PIN?

Which is blending the discussion about Andriod based wallets (which re-use addresses) and the discussion about password based "deterministic wallets" that don't re-use addresses.

At this point there are two completely separate discussions going on here.

One is about Android based wallets.
These reuse addresses, and are vulnerable to the possibility of a faulty RNG which can allow someone to potentially calculate the private key after multiple transactions.
These are randomly generated addresses and would not be considered "deterministic".

The other discussion is about the OP's suggestion that "deterministic wallets" would be more secure than randomly generated addresses.
In that discussion, which has nothing to do with the vulnerability that effected Android wallets, the concerns are that the source of the deterministic address could either be subject to collision due to multiple people choosing the same "password", or would not overcome RNG vulnerabilities since the deterministic "password" would be generated by a RNG (as in Electrum and Armory).

you may call the combination of the Armory seed and chain code a "password" but nobody else does including it's author.  that's where the confusion is.
8380  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Are deterministic wallets more secure than random wallets ? on: September 19, 2013, 05:01:18 PM
A whole lot of confusion.

You've taken two different concepts and blended them together, creating a whole lot of confusion for yourself.

please explain.
