8381  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: Bitcoin Wallet Recovery Services - for forgotten wallet password on: June 24, 2013, 07:40:58 PM
You say it yourself:

Quote
If you have no idea at all of your passphrase, and it was more than a handful of characters long, then we cannot help you. No-one in the world, including the NSA, CIA, D-Wave or anyone else can crack the encryption used in the bitcoin wallet if the passphrase is more than 15 fairly random characters. The bitcoin wallet encryption is strong by design. There are no known flaws in the implementation, and many people have tried to break it!

You cannot crack a good passphrase. Stupid people should be punished. If they lose one time they will be more careful or lose money again. It's a learning experience. I almost don't want you to provide this service because it will rob users of the valuable experience. People can now be lazy and make a simple password. If they forget it they can just come to you and all is well.

Also, have you thought about the possibility that a thief might use your service to crack a stolen wallet. Bots are easy to set up and can even be spread simply. If I were a bot operator and found that a few zombies had wallets I might be tempted to just have you crack all the wallets that I can find instead of setting up my own system to do it.

I can't believe Josh can even show his face around here these days... his company is such an abortion.

This thread is an abortion.

That said, it was the most entertaining abortion I've ever seen!!

No, abortions generally don't spill this much blood.

gox has been around since the beginning, don't think they'll go out that easily...

No, they'll just start paying everyone off in Gathering cards.

We're working to bring back missing functionality to the new beta site.  Unfortunately I have no ETAs on specific missing features.

Are you accepting cash deposits again?

8388  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Do we want to work with money regulators, or keep Bitcoin unregulated? on: June 24, 2013, 06:10:56 PM
We shouldn't even be talking to the government... This is none of their business and it should stay that way.

Did you just say, "money isn't the governments business?"
8389  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Users' Bitcoins Seized by DEA on: June 24, 2013, 05:55:18 PM
So...
This all leads to the several obvious questions:
Whats the BEST way to protect yourself? With a condom.
Whats the BEST way to protect your wallet? With a brain wallet.

Whats to stop them from "Seizing" ANY wallet TO which bitcoins "USED" for illicit activities ends up? Lock your front door.
IE, Someone buys drugs on SR, the dealer then buys/donates/trades bitcoins with someone in a completely legal way.  Whats to prevent them from following the blockchain path and arresting the innocent third party (you, me??) for receiving "drug money". Nothing, because you're a prisoner of your governmental system.

The video mentions that it is a felony in California for a business to raise money without registering with the SEC. So are all Bitcoin stocks illegal in California? Huh

I had the same thought. Especially now since fincen considers bitcoin a 'virtual currency'.

Bitcoin is not considered money by the state of California (at least in regard to money transmission):

Quote
2003 (n) "Money" means a medium of exchange that is authorized or
adopted by the United States or a foreign government. The term
includes a monetary unit of account established by an
intergovernmental organization or by agreement between two or more
governments.

I wonder how California will feel about a Condom Exchange.

Only 21M Condoms will ever be allowed to be exchanged. Currently, 10 Cm = $1.04 on the black market (or OTC).

I thought Bitcoin100 was a good idea but you've really cum a long way with your ideas now Bruno. lol

Of course, who wouldn't. Now let me see you get them to accept Bitcoin.

It's easy to talk to the people who can make this happen when I work with them every day.

Then do it fool! Don't ask us first, run with it! lol
8393  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Users' Bitcoins Seized by DEA on: June 24, 2013, 05:29:03 PM
It would not be until the police strip searched me and found my private key tattooed on my penis that they would have access to my bitcoins.

That is why they call them your "privates".

8394  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: License for entering the business of money transmission on: June 24, 2013, 05:20:04 PM
You will need separate licenses, I guess your legal fees and professional services fees will be extremely high

that's absurd

Not in the eyes of those who created this system: The established power structures. They don't like competition you see, so they're essentially making it impossible for a small honest business to succeed in this market.

According to Patrick Murck, General Counsel for the Bitcoin Foundation, anyone that mines Bitcoin needs an MSB license.

Quote
ALL miners are considered MSBs, since they are enabling transactions for a profit.

Yes, now all miners should register as MSBs, even those who mine 0.1BTC pr. month - this makes a lot of sense, and there's no overhead associated with it at all..

Your overhead is not the states concern. If the state cared they would make it a lot easier for small start ups to stay in business.

This law isn't here because govt expects everyone to run out and register. I doubt most people would be approved anyway. In fact, I doubt they care if you register. This gives them the ability to prosecute whenever they want and let's them set up Bitcoin politically as a rouge group of criminals operating outside the law. Then they need to spend no money attempting to fight Bitcoin, there will be no government super computers attacking the network but instead a slow propaganda campaign that erodes the user-base or at least keeps "the problem" from growing.

A new page in bitcoin's history.

True dat. Encrypt your wallet people, and stay off silk road!

You naughty drug dealers...

are people really this stupid to buy illegal drugs online?

Well, for the most part, they've been rather smart about it. Not that I condone it, but I applaud their technical skill.

That method is too much trouble when you can go to any major university in the world and get anything you want easily. I bet there's 10 times the volume sold at student union buildings than you could ever get off of SR.  And half of it is cooked right on campus!
