841  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Is it worth investing in USB Block Erupters? on: January 26, 2014, 10:57:04 AM
So, I heard you cant mine Scrypt coins with an ASIC miner, Are these ASIC, If not, Where is there a guide to mining them with scrypt? and will they mine at the advertised hash rate? Thanks!

The ASIC you found now are all specially designed for SHA-256 hashing.
There is also some rumors (or maybe news?) that some scrypt ASIC are being developed.

For example, this guy is selling "Scrypt ASIC / SHA-256 combo miners" here, but I am not sure if it is legit or not.
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=424987.0

It's legit, but it has a few issues:
1. You can't mine both Scrypt and SHA-256 at the same time with those
2. The Scrypt ASIC part is quite poor really. You get a better KH/s / $ with GPUs than with this hybrid ASIC....
842  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Will scrypt mining via GPU be obselete eventually? on: January 26, 2014, 09:30:54 AM
It's just funny how overlooked the prospect of improved GPUs is in these discussions.  GDDR6 by EOY and projected 2 Mh/s on these cards as a starting point.
This is true, for now. I doubt it will be overlooked the moment it hits the market though, same as with scrypt (which so far failed to impress).
843  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: New GPU Miner with a few general questions. on: January 25, 2014, 09:19:43 AM
TL:DR
To make things simple what I need to know is:

The bare requirements to build a GPU mining rig. What would be good to get that would be best for future upgrades aka more GPUs.

How do GPU extenders function? Like if I need to make a 16x plug into a 1x will it limit the GPU?

Thanks.

1. CPU and HDD have no affect on mining so the cheapest you can get the better. As far as RAM goes the opinions here are divided (from what I could conclude): some claim to have minimal amount of RAM (2GB) with 4+ GPUs and they mine just fine while others claim that you need approximately a 1:1 ratio between your GPUs RAM and the systems RAM, which is right, I don't know, I am still waiting on my hardware to arrive, so when it does, I'll know for certain (note: if you want more than 2GB of RAM to work you'll need windows x64 for which you'll need a CPU that supports that).

2. The PCI-E connection type doesn't matter for the mining itself, what matter is that x16 ones are built for power to go through them to help power up the GPU while the x1 isn't. So when you're using x1 PCI-E with your GPU you'll need a x1 to x16 powered riser so that you can provide enough power for your GPU.

Take what I wrote with a grain of salt, as I am no expert in the matter and still learning.
844  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: GPU positioning on: January 25, 2014, 04:56:20 AM
They are designed for that orientation. The fans on the outside of GPUs blow down towards the board, not up towards the adjacent cards.

My setup has only about 1.25 to 1.5 inches between cards and I have no heat issues whatsoever.

The exhaust comes out the sides of the assembly, like this:

That was an informative image, thanks.
So how come when you put your hand close to the fan you can feel the hot air blowing out of it, adjacent to the cards rather than from it's sides?
845  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Corsair CX430 power supply ? on: January 24, 2014, 08:30:09 PM
What is the worst case scenario? Ex: it will freeze or not work well.. or it may kill the card?

It should be enough for 1 card (though you might be pushing the PSU to its max depending on your settings) and worse case scenario, the PSU will shut itself down, but that's it, not harm will be done to the card.
846  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Need Emergency Advice Please!! on: January 24, 2014, 07:48:51 PM
So I went to check my miner online and noticed it had been offline for 45 minutes, i went to start it again and could smell burning, turned it on and the first gpu caught fire with like a torch like flame where the power connectors are attached!!! Has anyone heard of this? Why might it have happened?!

We are running 4 gigabyte7970's at around 75c and 673kh/s each In an open custom built frame. All the GPU's are on non-powered risers, could this have been an issue? we have a 1500watt psu running them.

Please could i have some advice, this is pretty scary as i also live on the 66th floor of a high rise building and it could have taken the whole thing down!!

Well, first off, let me reassure you that your rig on fire wouldn't take the whole building down ( I think  Wink )

Second, as for the cause of the fire, there could be numerous reason for it, from which the most likely one is that your VRAMs overheated, as those can run very hot. Could also be a simple manufacturing defect, in which case you just got unlucky. I hope you still got warranty.

As far as the risers go, I doubt those are at fault since if it was an issue with non powered risers than your motherboard would have fried, or the pcie connectors, but not the GPU.
847  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / GPU positioning on: January 24, 2014, 07:15:49 PM
Why are all GPUs in various mining rigs are positioned vertically with their fans blowing onto one another? Won't it be better if the fans would blow upwards? Or at the very least tilted 45 degrees upwards?
848  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: [1 LTC Bounty] Setting a second gpu via pcie 1x on cgminer on: January 24, 2014, 07:02:52 PM
1. Have you tried the card in the PCIE x16 slot? To see that it even works?

2. Does the motherboard detect the GPU in the BIOS?

3. Are you using powered risers?
849  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: How do I mine SHA-256 altcoins? on: January 24, 2014, 11:26:07 AM
One thing to note though is that Cryptsy prohibits you from mining directly to your Cryptsy deposit address, so you'll need a wallet to attach to your mining pool and once you accumulate a good amount of coins, send it to your Cryptsy account address and trade it.
Where does it say that?
When you create an address for a specific coin.
The exact warning is: "Notice: Do NOT mine directly directly to your Cryptsy deposit address." (Yea, they have a type there)
850  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: How do I mine SHA-256 altcoins? on: January 24, 2014, 11:08:24 AM
Currently I started BTC mining with 3 Antminer U1s at 1.6 GH/s.

I understand that it will be energy inefficient and too costly to run my mining rig mining BTC when the difficulty gets too high.

So, how do I mine alternative SHA-256 coins like freicoin? I know ASICs cannot do scrypt, but what do I have to do to mine these alternative SHA-256 coins. I heard all you had to do was point your mining software at a pool for that specific coin, is this true?
Yes, same way you mine BTC right now via a pool, all you need to do is join a pool that mines the specific coin you're interested in mining.

Also, is there anywhere decent where I can trade my alternative SHA-256 coins for BTC that does not require me to send them a load of documents and information about myself, just something simple like localbitcoins where you don't need to spend 2 weeks sending personal documents.

Thanks.

I am using Cryptsy.

851  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: AltCoin ASICs on: January 24, 2014, 11:00:18 AM
The only altcoins BTC ASICs can mine are of the type SHA-256.

Did you try dummy plugs?

853  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: sick/dead miner after 5 - 10 minutes mining. on: January 23, 2014, 12:15:22 PM
Seems like you over tuned your settings.

Try 1080/1500 instead.
854  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Buy 5 R9-270 OC, 3 R9-280X for ~750€ or just let them go? on: January 23, 2014, 07:59:30 AM
Both are Sapphires. The 270's come with Battlefield 4, so I'd get 5 BF4 coupons.  Tongue

I expect 700 Kh/s out of the 280x, but the 270s may be lemons with slow, high latency vram. I'd get 400 Kh/s instead of 470 like the Gigabyte R9-270 OC offers.

Is this a good deal in the first place considering the upfront cost, power cost in E.U. and the incoming ASICs, or should I forget about it?

Where the hell can you get r9-280x for 250€ a pop?
855  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Predicting GPU profitability for the next few months?? on: January 22, 2014, 10:39:41 AM
I am trying to determine the GPU mining profitability for the next few months, Ill probably be using a coin switching pool with about 15-20MHs. As of today coinwarz has TAG coin the most profitable, at about .0285/day per MHs (Doge at .0151/day per MH). I understand the volatile variables that come into play when choosing the most profitable alt coin to mine (price, diff level etc), but how can you estimate what 1MH/s can mine per day say 2 months from now?

If these coin switching pools are always switching to the most profitable coin, and new coins are always being released, what could be the biggest hit to the value of 1MHs of GPU mining power in the near future? I know the most obvious answer's when scrypt asics come out, but Alpha T still looks like its months away.

Alpha T looks like a scam to me...

I second that.
856  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Sapphire R9 290 directly from Amazon for $499 on: January 22, 2014, 07:39:03 AM
Be the way, they don't charge your card until it ships, and super easy returns. When you return they refund you as soon as UPS picks up the package. I just returned one of my 7970 Sapphires from Dec, as it just stopped working (fan spins but doesn't show up in CGMINER). The card always went sick and dead though, I scrambled high and low to find out why, not knowing the card is defective and it finally stopped working in like 10 days. It always gave me low hash rates, drove me nuts. I changed power supply, motherboard, RAM even switched from linux to windows, reinstalled drivers gazilliion times, all because I never thought for a second that the card may be defective.

Another card is starting to show similar signs. Hashrate drops. Went dead once already. Etc. starting to doubt Sapphire quality now.

I know they don't charge until shipment, which is great.
Anyway, I'd order it if it would be worth it, but I'm outside the US so with import fees, packaging and shipment handling, the price goes as high as 630$ per card (can get for 570$ locally), not so luxurious for me after all.
857  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Sapphire R9 290 directly from Amazon for $499 on: January 22, 2014, 06:54:45 AM
Very good price for the card, but be wary, even though we're talking about Amazon here, it doesn't mean they'll have this card in stock in time soon. A couple of years ago I ordered MSI Twin Frozr GTX570 (for gaming) from Amazon (and they had it listed as available - which in reality they didn't), after 2 months of waiting (and being in contact with them on a weekly basis) I gave up on the card and got something else.
858  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: r9 290 endplate removal on: January 21, 2014, 05:57:50 PM
There's 1 screw under the main plastic cover,  Only 6 small screw to remove the cover.  Takes less then 2 mins to remove the back plate.

Very easy job and well worth it

Did you do that yourself? How many degrees did it go down by?
859  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Marketplace (Altcoins) / Re: Hosting 18hr Contest, Winner gets Sapphire 7950 on: January 21, 2014, 06:45:49 AM
Try making it really rewarding, like this maybe:

10 participants minimum with at least 6MH/s each.

6MH/s is about 40$~ in 18hours which means that at the bare minimum you'll have 60MH/s mining for you in 18h that equals to 400$ (worth of the card).

So with minimum participants and MH/s you'll earn the cards value (Still a win), any added participants and MH/s will just be a bonus.

That way the miners get a chance to win a GPU worth 400$ by risking 40$ only and you get to, at the very least, sell your GPU for it's market price if not make more.

Win-win situation.
860  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Marketplace (Altcoins) / Re: Hosting 18hr Contest, Winner gets Sapphire 7950 on: January 21, 2014, 05:30:16 AM
With 10x 60mh/s you'll make a few thousand dollars worth of scrypt coins and you wanna give a measly 7950 (400$~) for that? Good deal for you.
Not to mention that with 60mh/s you could probably mine as much as 400$ or even more during those 18h.

Gotta be retarded to participate in this contest though.
