8461  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Elizabeth T. Ploshay for Bitcoin Foundation board on: September 13, 2013, 03:09:18 PM
many of the BF members have openly stated that they spend 99% of their forum time here on Bitcointalk.

so the fact that Elizabeth has not bothered to post here indicate that she will be out of touch with the vast majority of the community's opinion either willfully or out of ignorance?
8462  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Elizabeth T. Ploshay for Bitcoin Foundation board on: September 13, 2013, 02:46:06 PM
why hasn't Elizabeth bothered to enter this thread and answer questions?

What are those and how do they compare to what we have today?

The standard transaction is "This coin can be spent by someone who signs the transaction with the private key that matches a public key that hashes to <hash>".

To spend that, you need to provide the public key and then sign it.  Even if the signature algorithm was broken, those coins couldn't be spent, since the attacker wouldn't know the public key.  This is one of the reasons why re-using addresses is a bad idea.  Once you spend money from the address, you give away the public key.

The original transactions were "This coin can be spent by someone who signs the transactions with the private key that matches <some public key>".  If the signature algorithm is broken, then those coins can be spent by the attacker, since he would know the public key.

The updated system requires the hashing function and the signing algorithm to be broken at around the same time.

interesting.  i never knew that the original Bitcoin didn't involve Hash160's.

but doesn't this get back to the point i was making to you that pubkeys are in fact more moderately protected by unspent addresses, ie Hash160's, of those pubkeys?

furthermore, my original point was i'd love to see Peter erect a scripting challenge to hack an ECDSA-related problem that Schnier so blatantly highlighted.
8464  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Stop saying Bitcoin is good for money transfer. It isn't. on: September 13, 2013, 01:49:58 PM
If they could solve their FIAT problem, then they wouldn't have such difficulties in acquiring bitcoin.  Of course if they could solve their FIAT problem, we wouldn't really have a need for bitcoin any longer either.

You were doing so well there but this is where I have to disagree.

Fiat problems won't ever go away as their fundamental problems are set in stone.

The problems with getting fiat into Bitcoin would go away in an instant if we could get rid of the overbearing overregulations that are being erected to be obstructionist in nature.

Not to take away from Peters wonderful challenge to the world but shouldn't this have been better directed at the ECDSA weaknesses implied by Schnier assuming of course this was his motivation for posting this?

All of Satoshi's coins are a reward for breaking the ECDSA, since they are not protected by the RIPEMD160 hash function.

Well they are as a public key is protected by an unspent address.

"Satoshi's early public keys"

What are those and how do they compare to what we have today?

gold/silver futures lurching lower...

Yeah but silver is still over key support at 18.

Next time we test it will we go under of not is the only realy question i have right now.

Yeah but don't forget; the further it goes below 18 the richer you'll become.

8473  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: MOIP : Money Over Internet Protocol on: September 12, 2013, 12:18:14 AM
I think venmo is the biggest threat to bitcoin. If money over IP becomes prevalent without the need for bitcoin/cryptocurrencies, than the only benefit they really offer is for ideologist/criminals/economic reasons. But a lot of the added utility that we emphasize to the layman will disappear. And I ask myself, why don't we have that kiiler app yet?

then you don't understand Bitcoin.

Venmo still deals in USD which continue to be inflated by central bankers.  not to mention all the identity issues.

money is meant to be a store of value, not a toy for vested interests.

BTW:  I still haven't figured out what to do with the bad module.  Looking for a repair place nearby is proving challenging.  I'm near Boston, Mass. if anyone knows of one.

any places in California?

this is the best Bitcoin pump we've seen in a while.

With all the people interested they should open slots for committees so some of the losing candidates can still get involved.
That's a good idea man. I would hope that some of the other candidates will remain involved. There are some good people with a lot to contribute. Even non candidates and bitcoiners outside of the foundation should have their ideas heard and have a role in steering the board.

it is a good idea but the one thing i fail to understand is the closed nature of their forum.

why would this be?

i should add that i'm not a member of the BF so i'm not voting.

nor do i have a vested interest or horse in this game.  never even met Platzer.

i'm just looking to help the best candidate from my perspective.

i'm hopeful but just cannot see how these US based exchanges will survive regulation.
