8481  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: [BACK ONLINE] Bitcoin block data (665 GB): inputs, outputs and transactions on: March 11, 2022, 08:31:09 AM
For me it works instantly.
That's something Smiley Overnight, "transactions" completed downloading on the other Seedbox, and later "outputs" did the same. I didn't try "inputs" due to disk space limitations. So I think I can conclude it works, and it may or may not start instantly.
I'll stop fiddling and let it run for now, anyone who's in a rush can always go for the http download.
8482  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: [BACK ONLINE] Bitcoin block data (665 GB): inputs, outputs and transactions on: March 10, 2022, 07:53:37 PM
Torrents works well now, download is fast.
I still don't get it: my own test (from another Seedbox) hasn't downloaded anything after an hour.

Quote
Is is normal that only one tracker returns 'success' and peers data?
That's probably not good, but I'm not sure how to change to fix it.
I (arbitrarily) selected those trackers:
Code:
udp://tracker.opentrackr.org:1337/announce
udp://denis.stalker.h3q.com:6969/announce
udp://opentracker.i2p.rocks:6969/announce
udp://tracker.internetwarriors.net:1337/announce
udp://tracker.coppersurfer.tk:6969/announce
And indeed, only the first one seems to recognize the torrent.
8483  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: [BACK ONLINE] Bitcoin block data (665 GB): inputs, outputs and transactions on: March 10, 2022, 06:35:52 PM
I've finalized my update, and after 10 months, I'm happy to announce This project is back online!

Feel free to test (and/or seed) the torrents if you have some bandwidth and disk space to waste Smiley

I haven't tested the daily updates yet. Let me know if anything needs my attention.
8484  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Hardware wallet vs software wallet for daily transaction on: March 10, 2022, 06:12:43 PM
Given your use case, i.e. daily expenses, both Electrum wallet & Hardware wallet will provide same level of security.
This is not true. A hardware wallet is meant to protect your funds against software attacks. It's much, much more difficult to create malware that steals funds from a hardware wallet than it is to steal funds from a hot Electrum client.

I just realized the entire use case doesn't make sense: most people won't consider $10,000 a normal amount for "daily expenses". Something around $100 would make much more sense.
8485  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: n0nce's Steel Washer Backup jig (customisable) on: March 10, 2022, 05:58:50 PM
As far as I know, Bitcoin is the only crypto natively supporting multisig.
That's not true, I've seen it in Byteball (now Obyte), which actually supported it from it's official wallet. From what I remember, this was much more idiot proof by default than manually setting it up in Electrum. It's been a few years, but what I remember is linking the different wallets from inside each wallet, which worked nicely.

Quote
I have great expectations for Taproot to make degrading multisig easy to implement for the idiot user (like me).
Electrum is confusing: If you create a multisig wallet, you can't even save your incomplete wallet before you have the master public keys from all other wallets too. I tested it earlier today, and it's disappointingly labour intensive.

I just realize talking about multisig in a topic about steel washer backups is slightly off-topic. And of course setting up multisig is much less labour intensive than 3D printing and hammering words into steel Tongue I've spent hours setting up a secure wallet and backups in the past.
8486  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: n0nce's Steel Washer Backup jig (customisable) on: March 10, 2022, 04:45:15 PM
If you use a seed phrase and an additional passphrase, or a multi-sig set up, then there is a lot to be gained from having a tamper-evident container.
This makes a lot of sense Smiley I didn't consider the multisig scenario when I wrote about tamper proofness being quite useless.
Somehow multisig always makes me feel a bit uncomfortable: it doesn't "feel" as solid as using just one privkey for just one address.

I was looking to order void roll tape that is cheaper and you can customize size and shape yourself... and guess what, they have RED color  Wink
How useful is this if anyone can just buy it on Amazon? It should be more unique than that.

I am going to translate the whole bunch of informations in English.
I wanted to Merit your post already, but I'll save it for the version I can actually read Smiley
8487  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Hardware wallet vs software wallet for daily transaction on: March 10, 2022, 04:32:16 PM
However, you don't need to carry all those 10,000 with you all the time. You can send 9,000 to your HW and keep 1000 in a Electrum mobile wallet. Once the balance goes down, just move more to the mobile wallet.
This is the way to go Smiley It doesn't even have to be a hardware wallet, it could also be an offline Electrum installation.

2. A hardware wallet (You can transact offline, you can transact using your mobile)
For the record: using a hardware wallet doens't mean it's offline. You could connect it to an offline Electrum installation, and sign the transaction on the hardware wallet, but that seems a bit excessive.

Imagine, you have $10000 (in BTC)
Isn't it the same with fiat? I assume you don't keep all your money at the same place: some in cash in your wallet, some in your old sock or piggy bank at home, and some in the bank. You divide your money based on it's purpose.
8488  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: [List] Bitcoin Savings Accounts Providing Interest on: March 10, 2022, 12:25:41 PM
And in almost all cases, the excess counterparty risks that you incur from using one of these services will not be worth it.
This!
Even though it sounds attractive to gain 4% or more per year on your Bitcoin, the risk is up to 100%!

It's the same with the banks when we receive our salary on a deposit account.
It's not the same: banks (here) have a (government) guarantee to return at least 100,000 euro per account holder in case something happens to your money. If you want to store more money, you can open more accounts at different banks.
I wouldn't trust banks without this.

Do you think a bank might have enough to refund all the customers if something bad happens? Nah, the "insured funds" is what I call a marketing trick to make people believe they're safe while in fact, they're not totally.
The way it works in EU is that first other banks have to pay for the damages, and if that fails they'll get another government bailout. So ultimately the tax payers pay for it.
Note that this is about savings or checking accounts. Brokers are a different story.

In short:
Regarding the safety of your BTC, the sentiment of "Not your keys, not your coins" rings ever true.
I wouldn't risk it Smiley
8489  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Writing down seed phrase: printer ink or pen ink ? on: March 10, 2022, 09:44:34 AM
Let's take 3-of-5 as an example since that's what we've been using so far.

Back up 1: Seed A, xpub B, xpub C
Back up 2: Seed B, xpub C, xpub D
Back up 3: Seed C, xpub D, xpub E
Back up 4: Seed D, xpub E, xpub A
Back up 5: Seed E, xpub A, xpub B

Any 3 of those 5 back ups gives you 3 seeds and the other 2 xpubs, allowing you to fully recover the wallet, while preventing any person from viewing the contents of the multi-sig wallet.
My understanding is when you will create a 3-of-5 multi-sig, all five need to have all public master key to get the wallet created first.
Let's just test it Smiley

I created the following Multi-Signature Wallets in Electrum ("from 5 cosigners require 3 signatures"):
A. uphold plug victory much grunt plug convince option dizzy edge observe drastic
master public key: Zpub6xxXDnNQaCWT8QAZy9omUXxqtxFvaZyqpfaH79dZYVFZidZAnvJR7ta44V5ajdy16nr917DcWkK 9yGST24TFCTNgyxnk5uJPMEpQRVoGABk

C. grape thumb verify sail raven river regret view net laptop clump grocery

D. tourist brick accuse tooth spike erode remind patch biology cheese auto dinosaur
master public key: Zpub6yATJpzSCj8ps6xGJXRjHfFotNXUCTpqz2CSQcbC5V16FDJNYp8bVmUQsV4p5yiVUWvW6r1QxfU vCXz9LbpfYcSjux1fiSsVsJNgxLDNUKL
E. dinosaur kit uphold ring region attract ill blur goose swamp noodle million

Using the seed A and master public keys B-E, Electrum produces this address first: bc1qlcaruvdjc4em502w0pxadwrhjtrh4sd5jf7td65nctr7yhm0gfgq97ynk9

Quote
Or you are saying I create a 3-of-5 wallet and carefully give them the public key and public master key?
From my little test, I think this is correct. Anyone holding 1 out of 5 cards can help you recover funds, but doesn't know the address(es). Some combinations of 2 out of 5 cards are enough to recreate the address.
8490  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: [Mar 2022] Mempool empty! Use this opportunity to Consolidate your small inputs! on: March 10, 2022, 06:42:11 AM
You have posted it in the worst moment  Undecided or maybe you KNEW and it was on purpose?
Of course I saw fees were up a tiny bit when I posted this. I couldn't know they'd go up after that, but this morning fees dropped to the minimum several times again. And that's the point of this topic: consolidate inputs when you have the time to wait a bit. Don't use the minimum fee if you're ordering dinner.

Quote
Because you know, I did it this morning with 1sat and I wait and wait…
I guess it is correlated with today’s +9%
Possibly. Fees dropped again when the price dropped.

One hundred and fifty-fifth week paid.
Thanks again for your flawless timing! We had company tonight, I didn't even realize totally forgot it's Wednesday.
Let's put it this way, today was the first day since Covid that I didn't fall asleep during the day. Other than being tired, I'm okay again.
8492  Economy / Currency exchange / Re: 500 BTC for cash trade in Amsterdam Bitstamp 1.5% on: March 09, 2022, 05:46:26 PM
Today's Dutch news reminded me of this topic. A short translation: Amsterdam police withnessed a suspicious meeting between 2 guys, and followed both. They found 5 million euro in cash, tens of kgs drugs, and a gun.
That's only a quarter of OP's cash trade Cheesy
8493  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: [Complete!] Bitcoin block data (550 GB): inputs, outputs and transactions on: March 09, 2022, 05:37:31 PM
1. I remove tracker on both torrent before i start download process.
Why? And how? When I open a torrent in Transmission, it just starts and doesn't ask to remove trackers.

Quote
2. "output" downloaded started some time (about 15 - 30 minutes) after i add it.
I'm used to only downloading Torrents with many seeders, and those usually start within seconds. I have no idea why this takes so long. The Seedbox doesn't seem to lack capacity.

Quote
3. Average speed was 24-30MB/s. Although "transaction" have 2x speed after it connected to 2 seeder.
I think "outputs" shifted seeding to the other Seedbox at some point. I expected both to seed simultaneously.

Quote
4. I use qbittorent-nox with default configuration.
CLI? Even though I use CLI for most things, I've never used it for Torrent.

Quote
I think i can conclude that you made the torrent files correctly and there's no problem with your seedbox.
Thanks! I have about 100 GB upload to go, I expect it to be done tomorrow. After that, I'll create 3 brand new Torrent files with the most complete data (including correct file dates). I'll also schedule daily downloads to update the latest files again, update OP, and add the new download link.
I won't update the Torrent file that often, which means it'll miss the latest days (or weeks, months....).
8494  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: [Complete!] Bitcoin block data (550 GB): inputs, outputs and transactions on: March 09, 2022, 11:49:56 AM
But it's not practical option.
Indeed. I don't want users to manually add IPs.

Quote
Testing it now.
Only one out of 2 Seedboxes is currently uploading (at a very decent speed).

I'm uploading the rest of "inputs", after that I'll fix the file dates and see if I can get a more permanent solution for hosting those files.
8495  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: [Complete!] Bitcoin block data (550 GB): inputs, outputs and transactions on: March 09, 2022, 11:09:53 AM
Since it include option "Private Torrent", usually it means DHT is used by default. And when i tried it on my VPS (where i remove all tracker before start the torrent), the DHT is working and i can start the download.
To test this, I tried to create a new one with "Private torrent" enabled, and 4MB piece size. It didn't show up, so I deleted the existing one first. It still didn't show up. I'm now testing without "Private" again: this works.

Quote
Yeah, usually i just rely on DHT and share my IP:Port (if needed) so other user can it directly to list of peers on their torrent software.
How would that IP/port-sharing work? Usually I just click the Torrent or Magnet link, and don't need to manually add IPs.

Quote
My VPS have spare bandwidth, do you want me to try to see whether i can complete the download?
Feel free to test it Smiley
8496  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Looking for trusted agents for escrow and arbitration on: March 09, 2022, 10:28:41 AM
The first thing I would use it for is to fund open-source software, namely contributing to adding features to existing wallets.

Essentially, I propose a feature, people who want to see that feature implemented commit funds to some multi-sig, I hire developers to do the work, the work gets completed, everyone is happy, the funds are released cooperatively, and you didn't do anything. However, if the work doesn't get done, people are not happy and ask for their money back, you get hired, you find out that the developer can't show a working product, then you return the funds to the original contributors.
If I'd act as an escrow, I wouldn't want to be in a situation where my judgement relies on anything else than hard facts. I can imagine a situation in which the developer says the product works, but I can't reproduce it because of different settings on my system. It wouldn't be the first time I can't get certain software to work, despite following guidelines.
If I come to the wrong conclusion, my "Switzerland" image gets tainted.

Quote
A ruling would be something like:
  • The work has been fully completed and the funds should be released in full; or
  • The work has been partially and the [such] percentage of the funds should be released; or
  • The work has not been done and the funds should be returned; or
  • Any other statement as for why it is not possible to make one of the rulings above.
Even with partial work done, it would be good to know the conditions for payment up-front. I can imagine a partial product is no use for the contributors, so they may not want to pay anything for that.
8497  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Writing down seed phrase: printer ink or pen ink ? on: March 09, 2022, 08:50:08 AM
I am interested to learn how you are handling your crypto.
Part of my OPSEC is not sharing the exact details. It feels better that way.

My wife knows about all my back ups.
It's one of the perks of being married Wink
8498  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: n0nce's Steel Washer Backup jig (customisable) on: March 09, 2022, 08:44:40 AM
Now, when you go back to retrieve the box in the future, you can compare the photos you took before to how it looks now. If anyone has opened it to access your seed phrase, all the grains or whatever you used will have moved around and will look different to the photos.
Being tamper proof only helps you if funds haven't moved between the moment someone tampered with it, and the moment you discover the tampering. So if you hide your transparent container well enough, you probably won't check it very often. And long before you notice someone tampered with it, you'll notice your funds suddenly disappeared.
8499  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: [Complete!] Bitcoin block data (550 GB): inputs, outputs and transactions on: March 09, 2022, 08:26:47 AM
You need a VPS with a huge disk and unlimited band bandwidth, and those aren't cheap at all
The Seedbox actually isn't that bad: It has 6TB monthly bandwidth, and when it reaches the limit it continues at 100 Mbit/s.

Quote
You can buy a laptop (workstation) with a 1TB SSD and configure it as a server with NO-IP. This way your bandwidth will be limited only by upload and download speed, but not for the amount of data. And you can run the server in your house.
There are several problems with that: First, I don't want to expose my home IP address for this. And I don't want my upload bandwidth to be maxed out for several days in a row when someone downloads 600 GB.
Third problem is that I don't think my internet provider would appreciate it if I upload a few TB each month, so they'll probably start throttling my bandwidth. And on top of that, given current electricity prices, running a system 24/7 is more expensive than the Seedbox.

If I can't get the Torrents to work, the files can still be downloaded directly through http, but I haven't even finished uploading everything yet. And if barely anyone is going to use this, I might just have to give up on this project entirely at some point.

It got weirder, it looks like the site currently uses the wrong certificate:

The certificate is only valid for *.interactio.live.
