As for the name, we can't have both decentralization and claims over the name. Even if Satoshi were still around there was nothing he could do about it since he doesn't own the Bitcoin!

Well, if we agree that decentralization and name protection at the global level has never been an option, what do you think of the case that happened in Spain (link in my previous post), where the name and logo of BTC is protected on national level? What are the implications there if someone now tries to abuse a Bitcoin name or logo? I guess then the person who protected the name and logo can sue anyone who in some way abuses what is protected - and what would be interesting to know in this case is how this protection affects all existing BTC forks traded in Spain?

@DdmrDdmr could perhaps have some more specific information.
8582  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Should Crypto users use VPN's ? You decide..... on: December 01, 2020, 10:53:21 AM
1 million points question:
Do you trust your ISP and your mobile carrier?  Grin

I personally don’t trust them like most of those who know how the whole thing works, but we are all forced to use some ISP and mobile network if we want to communicate and have access to information. Most also agree that VPN is not something that guarantees our privacy, and even TOR cannot be a 100% secure solution - and to be honest, the more we try to hide our online traces, the more intelligence agencies become interested in what we are actually hiding.

In fact, it's hard or almost impossible to be online and remain anonymous no matter what tools you use - so while there's a lot of fiction in the movies, some things aren't far from the truth. The resources and tools possessed by top security agencies are so powerful that sooner or later they will identify and locate anyone and anywhere in the world if that person is not completely off the grid.
8583  Other / Meta / Re: 2 users. One spams with topics, one spams with burst posts. Could they be nuked on: November 30, 2020, 03:24:10 PM
The user in question used to be quite active in Economic, now he has turned his attention to Bitcoin Discussion because he has obviously realized that he has much more support there - and unlike many who ignore him for good reasons, spammers don't care if something is a quality topic or pure nonsense.

Although this way of participating in the forum can be quite irritating for most users, we have 2 options - to ignore the user, or to be consistent in reports for low value/off-topic. I think the first option is a lot easier, because people like him don't give up so easily - no matter how many threads are deleted, and even if they get a perma-ban - they show up with a new account and continue with the same nonsense.

Moreover, this user reminds me of some old trolls who had almost identical views - and I wouldn't be surprised if this isn't his only account.
8584  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Should Crypto users use VPN's ? You decide..... on: November 30, 2020, 02:24:34 PM
I think using a VPN often creates a false sense of security and privacy, and so I think it all ultimately depends on who is behind the VPN we use. Sometimes it makes sense for someone to use a VPN if they want to use a service that is blocked by their ISP, but this can often be a double-edged sword when a crypto-exchange or gambling site discovers that such software is being used.

How do we really know if they store data or not? (Any OpenSource VPN's out there?)

If you search by keywords you will find VPNs that claim to be open source, but for those who are not technically savvy (and most still aren't) it means nothing - because they all actually claim to protect user privacy, and on the other hand we know that huge money is in the game from the sale of user data.
8585  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: To newcomers: make sure when you buy bitcoin you are buying bitcoin! on: November 30, 2020, 02:05:14 PM
Man. I hadn't looked at the price of BCash in long time, but it is dying. The whole month of November it has just been hitting new all time lows pretty much every day. I remember selling my forked coins for almost 0.2 BTC each - now they are worth less than 0.015 BTC. That's an almost 93% decrease, and continuing to fall.

I remember when it was very close to the price of the original BTC, somewhere around $3000 and that was the best time to sell it - and I have to admit that I haven’t sold it yet, I almost forgot that I have it. Its current price is just under $300, but it is still in the TOP 10 according to CMC, which just means there are still those who believe in the project.

~snip~

That's right, the name Bitcoin is not protected globally, but this year one person protected it at national level in Spain. Surely the situation with all this forked BTC would be much better if the name was protected, so we can ask the question why no one did it, maybe no one could have predicted that there would be so many copies?
8586  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Ledger Black Friday Promo 2020 on: November 30, 2020, 11:41:56 AM
Ledger has 45% discount instead of 40%. I just got e-mail about this.

They follow the same tactics as last year, 5% extra on the last day. For those who are still not satisfied with the offer, last year the discount for BF was only 30% (max 35%) - but it is very likely that the Christmas - New Year's offer will go up to 50%.
8587  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Is Bitcoin at risk of regulation? on: November 30, 2020, 11:34:13 AM
It would be nice if Bitcoin could exist without various regulations, but did anyone think that the rulers of the world would give up what they keep people under control with? Whoever has the money has the power, and Bitcoin doesn’t fit into that story as something that should be completely decentralized. The question is how it was possible (or still is) to use Bitcoin in the way it was conceived, to completely circumvent all regulations and achieve a major adaptation at the global level?

If we had moved in that direction right from the start and if we immediately eliminated the idea of centralized crypto exchanges, how would that affect Bitcoin itself in terms of its accessibility to people around the world? Can we in any way prevent the authorities from regulating something that is meant to be available to everyone?
8588  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: To newcomers: make sure when you buy bitcoin you are buying bitcoin! on: November 30, 2020, 11:06:05 AM
It is logical that there can be only one original, everything else is copies that only their owners call the originals and something that is actually a real BTC. The only thing they are competitive with is the price, which is often one of the reasons why beginners buy this cheap fake BTC - and to make the problem even bigger, we have this damn page that promotes it and has a very high rank when it comes to search engines.

However, even if someone buys such a fake BTC, the thing can always be fixed by selling it - because I think that sooner or later most people must realize that something is wrong, especially if they look at the price.

I still don't get why developers didn't buy it back in 2010 and redirect it to bitcoin.org.

I think that domain changed hands several times, and it was only in 2014 that it came into the possession of Bitcoin Judas Roger Ver, and for a time it was managed by OKCoin. Unfortunately, from 2017 it serves to promote the most famous fork as a real BTC - and so it will be until the owner changes.
8589  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Seed phrases wrong - but having Ledger Security Card | Screwed or not? on: November 30, 2020, 10:47:19 AM
But, if my memory serves me correctly, the security card was basically a sort of 2FA mechanism. If you had the seed, you could still restore your wallet without the security card.

That's right, I found an old 2016 thread asking about this card, and it's actually something that has nothing to do with the wallet restore process.

From what I remember (I know how stupid it sounds, believe me...) I did a minor modification some time at a couple of seed phrases,
so most of them are the same.

Try to remember what modifications you did, and if you don't succeed in that, maybe btcrecover can help you - although I’m not sure if it helps in case you made too many modifications and mixed up the words to the point where the process would take too long.
8590  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Yobit.in is Legit????????????????? on: November 29, 2020, 03:12:25 PM
Darker45, I really thought that the OP would realize that money doesn't fall from the sky, and that someone gives someone as much as $18 000 just like that. Somehow it seems to me that this is going to end badly for OP, because although the whole thing is more than obvious scam, some don't believe it until they get burned.

What schuold i say to them Huh to deducte 0.02 from my 1 BTC?? I really see one BTC on my account and i want have it!!!!

You should listen to our advice if you want to save 0.02 BTC, but if you think we are not telling the truth, then unfortunately you will learn the hard way.
8591  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: November 29, 2020, 02:32:51 PM
Hmmmm could be on to something... slightly he’s going to the BTC side, eventually he will be saying BTC is better than gold and all the rest  Cheesy

I’ve already written somewhere that it rarely or not at all happens that small people have an advantage over big predators in something - and now some even have a 10-year advantage in their favor. I agree with PS to some extent, and I'm sure that his son is also glad that his dad softened his attitude towards BTC a bit Cheesy

8592  Other / Ivory Tower / Re: How can we make more people use Bitcoin? on: November 29, 2020, 02:16:08 PM
~snip~

There is no doubt that for the vast majority Bitcoin is still something too complicated, and I personally have experience with the average person finding it very difficult to understand and accept what Bitcoin is and what its advantage is. Unfortunately, there is still a widespread belief that this is something that is mostly used by hackers, people who buy illegal things online or those who want to launder illegally acquired money.

Not only will Bitcoin have to become something that will generally be labeled as positive and legal, but it will also have to reach a level of simplicity to the point that it can compete with a regular bank card. As a completely new concept in the current social structure, it will take a long time for adaptation to become greater than is currently the case.

Yet as things currently evolve, we are increasingly moving in a direction that takes us away from using BTC as a currency - but if we were to simplify the Lightning Network concept to the point that anyone can use it, then paying with BTC would be exceptionally competitive with all other forms of payments.
8593  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Please help - Ledger deducted btc and sent to 2nd unknown address?? on: November 29, 2020, 12:20:51 PM
Ive read about a the difference when not being a whole btc being sent back to a change address but my Ledger doesnt show receiving anything back.  So Ive been deducted a full 1 BTC on balance.

Get rid of worries if Ledger Live is causing you problems with accurate balance display (which is not uncommon), by downloading the Electrum desktop wallet and connecting your Ledger to it. Here I emphasize that you connect it and use it as a user interface (do not enter your seed anywhere except in the hardware wallet itself).

Detailed instructions on the following link : Set up and use Electrum
8594  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: In my school, Bitcoin is now becoming a subject on: November 29, 2020, 12:07:17 PM
There are a number of schools and universities that offer blockchain degrees, but how much (or no) learning about Bitcoin is there specifically? When it comes to the EU, I am familiar with the news published several times on our forum that the teaching of cryptocurrencies and BTC is being introduced in French schools.

I think that any education about cryptocurrencies, especially BTC is welcome, because there are more and more scam schemes related to crypto and people need to learn what exactly it is about and how to protect themselves.
8595  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: New Ledger phishing mail targets individual users on: November 29, 2020, 11:43:46 AM
Few days ago I also got almost same email.

I haven't received anything yet (email or SMS) yet, but even if that happens we all know that the danger exists only for those unfamiliar with the basics. I don't think most users will even see such e-mails because, as in your case, they usually end up in a spam folder - and when it comes to text messages, most smartphones have the option to block calls or messages from unknown numbers - which is not only useful in this case, but generally if you receive a lot of SMS spam.

Recently there was news that as many as 23 600 databases were publicly available for several hours to download, so although it is not directly related to Ledger hack - check your accounts and change passwords if necessary.
8596  Economy / Speculation / Re: Will Bitcoin reach 20k $ in 2021? on: November 29, 2020, 11:17:59 AM
Exactly because people are focusing too much on "$20k" we are not going to surpass it that easily.

There is a saying that once you get burned, you become quite cautious even when there is no need for it. In this particular case, some people believe that we are in an identical situation from the end of 2017, and that after $20k there will be a big correction that will repeat what happened during 2018. This is a completely illogical and very unlikely scenario that has minimal chances, not only because behind this bull run are big players, but also because we are only a few months after the halving that has not yet shown its true effects.

The vast majority of those who invest in BTC make no secret of wanting to profit when the price reaches $50 000 or more, but also many do not believe that this can happen in the near future. If it was possible to have a growth of even x20 in one year, why is it a problem to have a growth of x5 in the next 2 years?
8597  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Warning by Coinbase of Treasury Rule Change for KYC All Addresses. Poll! :) on: November 29, 2020, 10:55:25 AM
the biggest thing is that if the usa tried this, most usa companies and citizens drop it (or go dark) and when the rest of the civilized nations adopt bitcoin the usa will be left far, far behind.

I would not bet that other civilized nations will not follow the same path, not perhaps because it is the right solution, but everyone knows what pressure the US is willing to take towards others to accept some things. I'm sure Russia, Iran or North Korea won't care what the US says, but the EU is another story and I'm pretty sure they would pass an identical or similar law.

The same goes for Japan or India who dancing exactly the way the US plays, so I really hope this doesn't work, because as you say, even with the best will of every user, it won't be possible to prove origin and ownership.
8598  Economy / Currency exchange / Re: 🔥🔥🔥 TRADE YOUR BTC TO PAYPAL & FIAT CURRENCIES TO BTC HERE 🔥🔥🔥 on: November 29, 2020, 10:37:50 AM
Again, it's your opinion, nobody cares about it, keep it for yourself. I also have my opinion about you which actually added up the most to my decision not to trade with you, but I do not go around crying how awful you are a person because nobody cares about it.

You just bury yourself even more in the lie, because you didn't refuse to trade with me but you set me a minimum limit of $500 with the excuse that "It's just not worth it for me to get through all the hassle to log in to the account for such trade "  .

However, this discussion will not continue here - we will continue in the Reputation board.
8599  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Warning by Coinbase of Treasury Rule Change for KYC All Addresses. Poll! :) on: November 28, 2020, 03:06:52 PM
I have long been accustomed to the fact that nothing that comes from the US can surprise me, but if something like this were put into practice then it would really be a big blow for BTC. We all know that most people follow the law down to the smallest detail, and that most would agree to something like this in some way - and some crypto users would ignore the whole thing or give up crypto altogether.

In my opinion, this news could be interpreted in two ways - and that is that Trump has decided to implement as many strange decisions as possible before leaving office, while on the other hand such a move could mean that the US authorities are beginning to understand BTC as a potential threat due to the great interest of their companies in the same.

If you ask me, China used to be the one that had too much influence on the BTC - and now it is the US whose every good or bad decision can have a very significant impact on cryptocurrencies around the world.
8600  Economy / Currency exchange / Re: 🔥🔥🔥 TRADE YOUR BTC TO PAYPAL & FIAT CURRENCIES TO BTC HERE 🔥🔥🔥 on: November 28, 2020, 02:18:01 PM
If that's the case why do you keep crying here?

I honestly care about you and your scheme, there is no crying here but I just want to show what kind of person you are.

It's your personal business what you consider, you should keep it for yourself and restrain yourself from trashing my thread with non-business related things.

This is definitely related to your business on this forum, and shows how you treat your customers.
