I am sure that you already considered this but for sake of discussion:
With your limited time, perhaps in the future you would add a site submission form (with a captcha) to streamline things. Although of negative side of this is having to weed out submission of sites that are unrelated and/or low quality. Cheers...
This would definitely streamline things, but would remove the editorial side if the sites were added immediately.

If they were added to a pool that would be reviewed and then automatically listed if accepted.... this would be a really cool feature and it would certainly save me a lot of time! Something to think about for sure  Smiley

Thanks for your comments, I like the idea of a category for developers.

I forgot that I added bitcoinaverage.com! Embarrassed

I'm going to go ahead and add coined.com too, as they are both equally useful IMO. Maybe there will be a different category for them in the future so they can stand out.

I've never seen an index for local communities, that would be cool. If I had the information, I could have a category for them and then list US,EU,etc., and then use a pop-up box for the list of communities in that area.
867  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Is Litecoin massively undervalued? on: November 03, 2013, 05:56:26 PM
I think that it's overvalued..
this is what i was thinking.
It literally has no real reasons to be worth this much, except for being the oldest adopted alt.
I think you have precisely explained why it is worth as much as it is. Network effect.
868  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: CoinIndex.org on: November 03, 2013, 05:22:42 PM
How do you choose which ones you add? I don't think one of those I listed are less relevant than these.
There is no set criteria yet, though I may develop some basic framework.

Some reasons to not immediately include a site: potential scam; other listed sites do the same thing better; don't currently have a suitable category; I don't currently have the time to properly assess the website...

I went through all of your suggestions to some extent, here were my initial thoughts:

  • coinmap.org - Good, useful site. Need to add a category for it... other sites may do the same job better? I would need to research. Added to my 'to be reviewed again' list.

bitmine.ch - Mining company so suitable category for it. I need to check how reputable they are. Added to my 'to be reviewed again' list.

btclook.com - Very impressive site, suprised I hadn't seen it before. Added.

fetchtx.info - Good at what it does, but lacks features of traditional block explorers. Not sure if it has any benefits over currently listed sites. Could be advised otherwise?

bitcoinaverage.com - Good niche site. I anticipate that space will be at a premium before too long and there are other quality sites for market data at the moment.

coined.com - Similar to the last two sites in some ways, but may be able to find a suitable space as it certainly useful. Added to the 'to be reviewed again' list.

letstalkbitcoin.com - Looked like an interesting site. I will have to listen to the shows and find a category for it. Added to the list to come back to it.

bitcoinexaminer.org- Regularly updated with good content. Suitable category. Added.

justcoin.com - An exchange that I know nothing about so will have to research properly and see if it can be included. Added to list.

As you can see it's not an exact science and my limited time can make things a bit slow, however I plan to work on the site daily  Smiley

I am glad of the debate as it helps me understand how to make the site as useful as possible.

I've just added:

-BTCLook
-BitcoinAverage
-Bitcoin Examiner
-Plus500

I thinking flagging sites as "warning" is a very opinion based and not what a directory should be. If the site is clearly a scam then why would you have it on your site anyway?
This is something I was hoping people would debate.

Taking Mt.Gox as an example, I would hate to refer someone to them, only for them to make a fiat deposit and been unable to withdraw it. This is something I feel they should be warned about.

As BFL are shipping and Virtex's ToS are quite clear then I can see an argument for removing those warnings.

The warnings on securities and derivatives can be easily justified, I think.

If a site is a scam, I wouldn't list it = I don't think any of the sites on there are scams.

So this is a review site, not a directory, you are talking about two different sites now. Cause I could say something about most of those sites, that should be a warning. Also people should do their own research, as you claim this is a directory, if it was reviewer then I can see the warning.
In that case then maybe it is a hybrid.

It is definitely not going to be a simple directory that adds every site that wants to be listed. Quality is important.

Of course this is always going to be subjective, but I am always open to feedback. Ultimately I would make the final decision unless other people get involved with the website.

In terms of the warnings - I guess I should come up with a methodology that brings as much consistency as possible.

Yet again, thank you all for the nice comments and suggestions  Smiley

Nice, well done. Bookmarking this, tweeting this & adding this to delicious  Cool This is robust.
I like how you included all the icons. Did you hard code this or did you borrow a framework? Nice work to say the least. Cheers...
I appreciate the support!

I hadn't made a website for over four years and I was a complete newbie then, so it was fun learning!

I used a very basic template (header, body and footer) and then did the rest in notepad. I borrowed the idea for the tables/icons from another site of a different genre - as soon as I saw it I knew Bitcoin could do with something similar.

I plan to update this regularly keeping it relevant and I'm always open to suggestions or ideas.

The CoinIndex.org design looks very organized. Have you added Bitcoin Reviewer yet?

It's a free site which provides unbiased & accurate info on Bitcoin gambling sites. Hopefully, we'll be able to prevent readers from losing Bitcoins to rogue casinos, and scams.

I think News or Reference could be a good category, although we don't have many news articles up yet.
Thanks, that's a really useful website.

I will find a category for it.

875  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: CoinIndex.org on: November 02, 2013, 06:11:11 AM
Thanks for the kind words.

I think I will add a small section for the best faucets and also try to find a way to include sites like workforcrypto  - Free BTC & Earn BTC categories could work.

Thanks for the tip, Vod, I will look into that.

Cheers, Otoh  Cool

This thread is to announce the launch of my website

www.coinindex.org

Its aim is to list every relevant Bitcoin website on a single page and rank them in order of quality.

The nature of this website makes feedback invaluable - please e-mail suggest@coinindex.org with:

  • suggestions for websites that should be included
  • reasons why a currently listed website shouldn't be included
  • categories that I have forgotten (or not got round to doing yet)

I hope that CoinIndex.org will be somewhere where you would link newbies to as an introduction to everything Bitcoin.

Also, please report any bugs/typos/broken links.

Many thanks  Smiley

Sorry to keep asking the same sort of questions, but...

If I were to have an online computer with a guaranteed clean OS, running only bitcoin-qt, with no other software ever to be installed, how could someone steal my coins?

(Ignoring offline attacks)

Don't mean to sound rude but these questions doing from someone with a high level of activity? Sort of weird.
Having all that experience I would assume you should know most all of this basic knowledge of bitcoin.
I have never stored a large number of BTC on a PC at home, but this is something I would like to do in the future (I have found blockchain.info with 2FA to be fine so far).

Of course, I understand that all it takes is for some malware to get onto the PC and the coins are gone - what I am trying to work out is if there is a way to run Bitcoin-qt on a fresh PC and ensure that it is impossible for malware to infect it through your actions (or rather, your lack of actions).  If you don't download anything, how can someone gain access? I don't know enough about hacking - can they hack through your router possibly?

This is all good advice: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=320385.msg3443370#msg3443370

This thread has served as a bit of a thought experiment for me (and hopefully helped some newbies too).

If I were to have an online computer with a guaranteed clean OS, running only bitcoin-qt, with no other software ever to be installed, how could someone steal my coins?

The same way someone could inject malware or a virus in your system without your direct support. Basically the attacker must be able to run some code or script on your computer. If your system was just clean (you never know if it was really clean even if you think so) then there might be three primary leakages:

1. you use any browser and it is able to execute code (Java, Javascript, ActiveX, etc ...) which simply reads your key input (keylogger) and/or your wallet.dat

2. you install some software which serves an attacker as intrusion point and reads your keys and/or wallet.dat

3. some process on your system (who knows how it came where it is now) serves an attacker as intrusion point and reads your keys and/or wallet.dat

You'll never be sure for 100%. But if you follow some rules (one of my previous postings in this thread) the probability to loose Bitcoins gets low.
Thank you.

What I'm struggling to get my head around is that I need a 'clean' PC to generate my private keys for a paper wallet, so why not just install Bitcoin-qt and do NOTHING else with this computer, but send/receive transactions?

Is connecting to the internet inherently dangerous even if you don't download ANYTHING?
