8603  Other / Off-topic / Re: Computer Users to Disable Java (Important News) on: January 18, 2013, 08:21:30 AM
Interesting they only mention disabling it on computers - I'm pretty sure many late model phones use Java too.

I don't think the exploit affects mobile phones, unless i'm wrong

Very few do that though, mainly because of course what they produce is rubbish and they know you'd cancel the pre-order if you saw a proper preview of what to expect, why these people can't just provide good products to begin with is beyond me.

They want to save money while making maximum profit.

If you guys dislike BFL so much, why did so many of you preorder?

8609  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How is it insured that only 21 mil bitcoins will ever be minted on: January 18, 2013, 07:30:38 AM
What if the community later found 21m is really not enough?

You can always use smaller units (0.1, 0.01, 0.001 etc.)
8610  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Thoughts on the security of bitcoins? on: January 18, 2013, 07:29:21 AM
Meh, i'm not too good with the technical details but from what i've gathered over the years it seems like the possible problems would be more from those who could disrupt the blockchain but even then that'd take alot of power and bandwidth and is more of a dick move than anything. "Stealing" or somehow creating bitcoins seems impossible or close to it (excluding user related mistakes/exploiting human nature)

Maybe some kind of trojan style exploit that would have to be spread through a bt client or market (some poker/gambling site that uses flash/java or requires users to download anything) that would be scripted to funnel coins to a set address?

I'm sure along the way some users will figure out ways to fuck things up but given how good the track record has been so far I'm optimistic.

Malicious / hijacked websites exist, and have always existed. It's your responsibility to protect yourself.

Try contacting them if it's closed down, that's your only hope I guess.

8613  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Bitcoin slow to download the block chain? on: January 18, 2013, 07:25:01 AM
If you use an online wallet, like blockchain.info/wallet, or a client like Electrum, you won't have to worry about this.

8620  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Why is there only 2,100,000,000,000,000 (2.1 quadrillion) units in BTC? on: January 18, 2013, 07:17:21 AM
I did a little more research. I think the client is written in C++.
And in C++ you have a 64 bit integer that goes up to 9.2 quadrillion (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Primitive_data_type). So it means that quite a large part of the 64 bits are being used. It also means that the money supply could have been easily doubled or tripled without getting problems of computing it on a 64 bit processor, but this would have a little impact on the amount of time it would take to mine all coins.

Thanks for other good information.

I don't think that was how it was decided, but interesting theory nonetheless.
