8603  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Easy Way to protect funds from lack of replay protection in comiong fork on: November 04, 2017, 04:27:23 AM
Is there a better and safer way to split our coins though? I hope a Bitcoin developer would make a tool for this to make it easier. I have most of mine in cold storage but I would be willing to sweep my private keys to get my free B2X, but only if safe to do.

My second option is to keep some in an exchange for a quick B2X dump.
8604  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Are hard forks the poor developer's ICO? on: November 04, 2017, 04:12:51 AM
Roger Ver, who is Bitcoin Cash's unofficial spokesman, believes that Bitcoin's transactions should remain onchain to uphold "Satoshi's vision". I did not take it seriously at first but if you take into account Blockstream's primary motive as a company, which is profit, then their interest in limiting blocks to 1MB is corrupted. To its followers, Bitcoin Cash is a "protest".

No comment on Bitcoin Gold. What values do they uphold?
8605  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Are hard forks the poor developer's ICO? on: November 04, 2017, 03:45:01 AM
I certainly do not believe so. There will be some hard forks that will be for the purpose of "money grabbing", but some will be fighting for their ideals. Bitcoin Cash, although I disagree with them, is a good example of a fork that has kept the belief in their values. I wish the same could be said of Bitcoin Gold.

8607  Economy / Speculation / Re: Why i think the CME listing Bitcoin Futures is actually a bad thing! on: November 03, 2017, 06:21:59 AM
OP, the question of "when will Bitcoin start gaining real mainstream adoption" has always been around. The CME's listing is one of the roads that it should take to get there. We should be bullish about it.

I suggest you take a step back and read the developer's documentation at www.bitcoin.org, and try to gain a deeper understanding of the protocol. Once you do, then tell me, what can those bankers do to stop it? Sure, the price may fall for a while, but the network will live on.
8608  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Paid bitcoin invoice, transaction stuck, invoice address now expired. HELP!! on: November 03, 2017, 05:01:18 AM
Your transaction is already broadcasted in the network. All you and your friend need to do now is to wait for a confirmation on the blockchain before the merchant is going to process your transaction.

There is no need to worry, I am sure the merchant is aware that the mempool is flooded again. This has been happenning for over one year now.
8609  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: BitCoin Is Too Complicated for Average People! on: November 03, 2017, 04:54:20 AM
Well, I think it is indeed too much complicated and harder to use, you have to have knowledge about how it works on internet.

A 5 year old kid could use the internet well these days. We live in the internet generation, we should adapt and learn or be computer illiterate. That is your choice.

You have to make an account, buy bitcoin from different sites ( which takes 5% to 7% Fees) then transfer to exchanges for trading or to use.

There is no way to avoid it. If you truly want to have Bitcoin as an investment, you have to pay the fees.

How can a normal people, who usually watch youtube video, use fb or other social media, you expect him/her to know all these things? I seen people give up easily, and think it's too techy.

You will get used to it. There is a learning curve to overcome but it becomes easier. Do not worry.

I believe if Bitcoin sell coins on their official website, with lower fees, such as 1% to 2%, and make  a simple wallet for people to use, more & more people would buy and use it.
What is your opinion on it? discuss..

There is a currency exchange sub forum, try to look for better deals over there. If you want a simple wallet, make an account in Blockchain.info.
8610  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Can Bitcoin grow into a key payment network? on: November 02, 2017, 05:12:02 PM

Of course it can, but for this purpose it is necessary to pass bitkoin through many bans, attempts of regulation, state misunderstandings. Bitcoin should unanimously recognize everything, without trying to subjugate him. Then this system will become one, decentralized, without superfluous intermediaries, fast, safe and anonymous. Cool Roll Eyes

No, not in its present form. Blockchains plus proof of work are very inefficient and slow in reaching consensus, but the good news is there is a scaling solution being developed called the Lightning Network. I have not read deeply much into it, but it is essentially another layer that sits on top of the Bitcoin network that is supposed to be scalable.

I read a developer quote that described it as something like "a Ripple network on top of Bitcoin".

8612  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Atomic swap? Objection: I don't think it means decentralized coin exchange. on: November 02, 2017, 06:29:43 AM

I did not know that atomic transfers were already invented two years ago. Thanks for sharing.

Which coins were used to do the transfers and why is the technology not widely used today? This is a breakthrough and no one is giving it any attention or giving the developer any recognition.
The coins that already can be used for atomic swaps are Burst and Qora. At least the Qora client has even a GUI option for that (see this article).

The reason I think it is not widely used is that both coins share a relatively similar codebase (they are Java coins inspired by NXT and use a smart contract platform called "Automated Transactions" for the atomic swap implementation) that is pretty different from the standard "Bitcoin clones" and Bitcoin/Script coins need an alternative implementation. Burst and Qora never were among the "top altcoins".

I think also the creator CIYAM deserves more credits for his breakthrough implementation. His solution is based on a concept invented by Sergio Demian Lerner and improved by Tier Nolan but it's the only implementation I know that is usable by non-technical users.

What a shame. All the credit should go where its due. But why did the Burst and Qora developers not try to develop it for NXT which was the most popular Java based platform at the time it was invented? I believe NEM is also written in Java.

They could have developed a symbiotic system in between each platform that could have aided all of them gain adoption.
8613  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: IRS/tax question: Exchanging bitcoin cash for bitcoin? on: November 02, 2017, 05:39:48 AM
How can the free BCC be considered capital gains if they were basically given to you for free for holding Bitcoins? It was not traded using fiat and there was no value exchanging hands. I believe it will only become taxable once you sell it for fiat. But then again these are not gains from trading, so it is another question mark.

As far as I know, this is the correct assessment. The tax law can only be applied once the person holding the digital coin will convert his hoard into the fiat money and am sure this is the time that a person has to declare it for possible capital gains (even if given for free or as a gift). This is actually a universally accepted system in applying tax towards cryptocurrency. A person can keep his digital currency forever and not be taxed if there is no movement to convert it into the fiat cash. Now, as in anything in life, we have to follow the law on taxes especially in countries where the government is strict and is always monitoring. People who are not fond  of paying taxes should instead relocate to some third-world countries where the governments are busy with something else.

But there is another problem. Can coins coming from a hard fork be considered "capital gains"? I know that there are definitely no laws for this and a good lawyer may find a small window for tax avoidance.

I am sure there are exploitable gaps regarding this, but I would like to see a lawyer join the thread though, to educate us.

8616  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Atomic swap? Objection: I don't think it means decentralized coin exchange. on: October 31, 2017, 07:57:35 AM
I am also very interested in the topic and eager to get informations about actual "real" tests that are going on. According to this Spanish article there were tests with Bitcoin, Zcash, Litecoin, Decred, ARK and Vertcoin, some weeks ago.

The traditional atomic swap model supposes one multisig transaction per chain. That obviously isn't enough for high frequency trading but would enable the typical use case of a trader that wants to "ride" bullish and bearish cycles of distinct coins. For higher frequencies, one could use LN, or maybe even a specialized pegged sidechain in the future (RSK?). For LN, however, I think it would be used mainly for small exchanges of less than 50-100 USD because of the slightly increased risk.

By the way: There is a atomic swap system that works for two years now used only by two small altcoins but supposedly could be adapted to Bitcoin-based coins. I have recently downloaded both blockchains to test it soon, if I am successful I'll report results here.

8617  Economy / Speculation / Re: Upcoming alt bull run on: October 31, 2017, 07:45:29 AM
This is the trend I noticed in the whole market, if Bitcoin goes up, some altcoins are left behind or go down in price. If Bitcoin goes down, most altcoins go down with it leaving some to stay flat or rise small.

The best outcome for altcoins is for Bitcoin to be stable in a price range giving them the opportunity to catch up.
8618  Economy / Speculation / Re: political events ( VS ) bitcoin price on: October 30, 2017, 05:56:32 AM
There were posts around here that have speculated on Brexit, the Catalan split and I am sure there were other political events that stated that "x or y is happening therefore Bitcoin will go to z". but look at the chart, nothing is happening to it except climbing to new highs. Bitcoin simply does not listen.
8619  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Atomic swap? Objection: I don't think it means decentralized coin exchange. on: October 30, 2017, 05:44:32 AM
My biggest concern is scalability, obviously, but there is other challenges as well. I was just wondering if anybody has been studying the subject before and can share her/his ideas with me?
Have you heard of the lightning network? My understanding is that atomic swaps would use that. So, it's highly scalable. You can buy litecoin 100 times over the span of a month using one bitcoin transaction and one litecoin transaction.

In theory, yes. But we if do not see that it is possible in practice, we have nothing. I would rather see Bitsquare developed further and used more. It is a more practical solution in the state of the technology that we have now in my opinion.
8620  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How did Bitcoin Gold Fare? on: October 30, 2017, 05:35:40 AM
OP, not that good I believe. But the high volume should reassure its developers that forking Bitcoin is the best way to devise a new coin from thin air. It will also cause other developers to follow and do more hard forks.
