This is routine on Elance. Sometimes the project posts make me laugh, other times I cry and wonder if I need to find a new line of work.
903  Other / Meta / Re: [POLL] should we use more "report to moderator" clicks? on: July 05, 2011, 02:27:13 AM
I'm shocked at the amount of censorship here. Maybe I was naive but I just figured this would be one of the last places I'd find it. I'm not saying I'm an anarchy guy. I don't want to read scam and porn posts but maybe others like that shit who knows. I know that I LOVE stupid (even off-topic) jokes in a thread to break up the monotony of 2 goobers yelling at each other, but apparently I'm in a minority there so my preferences have been deemed worthy of censorship - not that I know that a reply of mine has yet been censored but I know I've been a part of threads that were deleted and/or banished to some nearly hidden and very off-topic section of the site.

I just came to learn more about Bitcoin. I generally prefer to become a part of any social gathering by working my way in with jokes. Is that so bad? LOL, really, I'm floored at the jackboot atmosphere around here. And with so many posts about "how do we expand the Bitcoin community"... the whole tattletale to the moderator stuff is the opposite way to accomplish it.
904  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: My earlier google trend correlation still holding strong, crash predictable on: July 05, 2011, 01:34:52 AM
How do you make Google give you the list?

You kidnap their children for ransom. Works every time. Just be sure to use a voice scrambler when you call or they will track you down.

906  Other / Meta / Re: Eh? Market manipulation? on: July 05, 2011, 01:25:22 AM
I also noticed some other thread where a moderator admitted to censoring posts where he felt insulted. The irony in this freedom-loving community's flagship forum is surprising. Guess what boys and girls? The brave new world of crypto-currency is just like the old world when the shine wears off.
907  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: POLL: What are the most likely things that may cause bitcoin to fail ? on: July 02, 2011, 03:10:56 PM
What will cause it to fail are all the things happening now:
- lack of easy security if stored on one's own machine (people's machines are being hacked just for bitcoins)
- lack of security + extra costs if stored online (web sites exploited, fees - I understand all commerce has fees and exploits but if you want to start a new currency maybe kill the fees until it gets established; bank accounts are insured; credit cards defend against fraud)
- lack of security during trade (i send bitcoins but what if I don't receive my goods?)
- miniscule merchant support (where can I buy toilet paper, Doritos and Mountain Dew with my bitcoins?)
- too high cost to get into the market (It's fun to buy maybe 1 coin at $15 to tell the world "i own a bitcoin" but really? A bitcoin isn't worth anything beyond a novelty to the average person until many of these issues are resolved)
- exchange rates seem easily manipulated so that even speculators remain unwary

It would be pretty neat to see Bitcoin mature and succeed. But whatever happens its been interesting to watch. People are always entertaining. I like the folks that talk about total currency collapse and government meltdown as if in anarchy there would somehow be a concern about computing or even the ability for people to generate electricity on the scale that would allow an electronic currency to remain viable. LOL, currency in those situations would be more basic like food, weapons, sex, clothing. If Mad Max only had access to his wallet.dat file he wouldn't have had it so rough!
908  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Does it bother you Bitcoins is used to finance drugs, child porn and terrorism? on: July 02, 2011, 02:09:21 PM
Does it bother you that $ is used to enslave entire societies in engineered debt and artificial scarcity?

The "artificial scarcity" bit reminds me of Bitcoin...
909  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Let's crack this chicken/egg problem on: July 02, 2011, 03:29:21 AM
Average Joe will not use BTC without some security. Even "regular" ecommerce needed big security changes to take off. SSL encryption. Credit card companies had to start covering you when defrauded online. The "evil" PayPal came along and offered disputes. This makes buyers comfortable with risk.

It's obvious the Bitcoin crowd doesn't need to feel as warm and fuzzy about transactions, but average joe will need to feel protected. I just had to dispute a PayPal purchase this week. I sent $50 for product that never arrived, I emailed seller, I called, no response. Thankfully PayPal allows me to dispute it and I should get my money back. What if I had paid in Bitcoins?

Maybe Bitcoin won't need the same protection eventually. Perhaps there will be a web site or something that lists anybody who got ripped off so we'd know publicly who not to purchase from. But then I guess that'd be full of people who just want to ruin someone's business whether it was a bad business or not.

Of course I'm generalizing, but the Bitcoin crowd doesn't want controls. They find PayPal evil. Yet they want Bitcoin to grow into the average joe's world where controls are wanted.

I think Bitcoin could end up with wider acceptance. Maybe some place like Amazon.com where people don't have any problem trusting they'll get their product (at least when it comes from Amazon). But everyday web sites that you don't really know anything about? Most people wouldn't take a chance sending BTC off into oblivion without recourse.

Next seal to get, both TH and CBX is the BBB seal. I know some dont like that seal and I can see some things about I dont like aswell. But its yet another seal of approval from a respected institution. The BBB seal is not easy to get.

BBB might not be the best seal to have...

Maybe it had something more to do with the coins, which more closely resemble U.S. currency and are seen in a video being passed by the Bernmeister as "the new ten dollar coin": http://www.opencurrency.com/liberty-dollars-arrogance-ends-in-federal-guilty-verdict

913  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Gox wouldn't be getting hammered right now, if they had allowed open orders on: June 26, 2011, 07:19:58 PM
They have MILLIONS of dollars worth of BTC, and it's like its being run by high school kids.  Something simple like a "home" button to show the main webpage once you're logged in.  It's just the simplest shit... it almost seems like they're saying "OK, whats the best way to do this?" and then do the EXACT OPPOSITE.

We deal with this in web development all the time. Programmers are very smart folks mostly. They can do wonderful things with code that plumbers and doctors either can't or don't want to do. But plumbers and doctors of course help you in return with what they provide. It's the same for the art side web design and web site usability - many programmers create something complex yet fail to make it easy or useful for others. They'll even get offended when you suggest things like a Home button, because for them a home button is superfluous.

It's relatively simple for anyone these days to "make a web site", especially people who work in science or math fields, backend code, that kind of thing. But what we see time and time again is that programmers and folks in the "thinking" (left brain) type of fields have trouble with design/usability. Design and usability issues often lean toward the arts; the "intuitive" (right brain) fields.

While we're all different of course, and have our strengths and weaknesses, generally artists don't make complex web sites and programmers don't make very pretty or easy-to-use ones. It's just left/right brain normal issues. That's why web development firms are often made up of at least a programmer, an artist and a project manager. It's rare to find one person who handles all that competently.

It's often just a matter of a left brain person that understands a web site is "good enough" if it can perform the complex task goals they have. Design and such is left for later, and often "later" doesn't roll around until enough people have said "gee, a home button would be nice".

I think Gox and Tradehill are both pretty weak offerings as far as design/usability but that's IMO. There's always the Google argument though. Can't get more spartan than that and I find a bunch of Google's tools not all that user-friendly. I still have trouble finding the button to compose a new email in Gmail and I've been using it for years. And yet, as bad as the design/usability of Google (+tools) is, one can't argue with its success.
914  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How many bitcoins are you mining each day? (another pissing contest) on: June 26, 2011, 10:17:50 AM
Rats for sale! I've got rats!
Apple cores... I've got apple cores. Freshly picked from the garbage of the rich!
Nothing. I have absolutely nothing! Aside from the .0000553BTC I mined yesterday.
915  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Best way to sell/buy bitcoins without fees? on: June 26, 2011, 10:11:08 AM
I've read some folks have had PayPal accounts frozen. However I also see many bitcoins available on Ebay. Many people use PayPal to pay on Ebay, in fact many of the bitcoin auctions only accept PayPal-based payments. I haven't been involved in any bitcoin transactions on PayPal but it appears there's only an issue if you sell, someone buys and then disputes, which gets PayPal actually involved in the process as more than just a payment gateway.
