ummm... well... you just start the GUI client, go up to the menu, and find the little box next to the menu option that says "Generate Bitcoins". click it. that said, i have a quad-core AMD Athlon CPU with 4 Gig of RAM - and i get about 10 Mhash/sec when using the Bitcoin client to generate with my CPU. if you plug this number (my khash/sec): 10,000... ...into the Bitcoin Generation Calculator, here: http://www.alloscomp.com/bitcoin/calculator.php...you will note that it would take me, with my pretty decent CPU, an average of about 545 days to generate a block. that's running 24/7. don't use your computer right now - use your eyes. read this forum, start to finish. good luck.

I can test this with 5970s but I don't like the idea of installing things into /usr/share or requiring root privs for anything. Can I configure to pull the kernels from /home/user/share or the like?
make a new user with create/read rights to /usr/share? it shouldn't screw with your main login, or with root. then make everything in /hashkill executable for that user.

Value has gone ~300% up within quite short time, having +40% more difficulty doesn't hurt it much, I would say it will go more up * sigh * alas, i must agree.

Looking at that picture I suddenly had this urgent need to make sure I had no loose papers on my desk in case they suddenly caught fire. Then I considered the secondary use of all that heat and how it could be turned into a pizza oven (I'm hungry ). thin crust on the top two. very thin... and garlic wafers on the third.

The side panel on this one almost is a box fan. yes it is but that fun is so slow, but not noisy. HAF in reality is not high airflow, but half passable and not noisy airflow yeah. i have an AZZA Hurrican case like that: tons of very slow airflow. my cards are touching 80 C, which is a bit warm for my taste. i have a couple of fan voltage regulators on the way...

I feel so outmatched.
at home, i have a 5570 that gets 63 MH/s(.063 GH/s) going to the slush pool. i run it when the PC is on. and I'm glad just to be getting that 64mh
at least I'm mining when I can when at school.
"I feel so outmatched." you have no reason to. how many people on earth - out of a population of somewhere around 7 billion - are doing better than you are? two or three thousand? i note that you can probably get $50 bucks for your 5570, and pick up a 5770 for an additional 60-70 dollars or so. that would triple your hash rate. 40ish BTC/mo in slush's pool. go for it. you're a student: it's not like you have to eat or anything...

OK think I fixed the "fflush" problem. Also managed to integrate the ADL part: now we have some nice statistics about GPU temperature and utilization when you press ENTER key: There is a user-defined temperature threshold (default:90) that causes the miner to disable the particular overheating GPU for 1 minute when reached. I guess better idea would be to increase fan speed (perfectly possible) but haven't done that yet. getwork mechanism also improved for faster cards - well, unless you have >2.4GH/s total compute power The ADL monitoring does not depend on any new libraries, it's part of the Catalyst driver suite. Need some more testing, will release it soon. awesome!

Never tried it solo in fact. Should test. -D option brings higher speed at the cost of less responsive desktop. The infinite progress indicator issue will be fixed soon, looks like I've forgotten to flush stdout -D option feels less stable. trying 3, 4 and 6, i get variance between two Mh rates in all three cases: 172 and 176. mostly 172. (-G is worthless to me: single-core Sempron 140 with 2 Gig RAM.) i hope to see version 0.2.5 up soon - if you get stdout flushing, i'll make it the miner for my little, frankenputer pool miner. and we'll see how it goes with my two solos (2x5870 and 2x5850). thanks again!

First PR-2000 off the line. Generates over 2.0 GH/s using 3x 6990s at stock clocks.
What motherboard is that with that kind of spacing? looks like some kind of MSI - "Military Class"...

Catalyst 11.3, SDK 2.4. on debian testing with the 2.6.32-5-amd64 kernel. it feels very stable and smooth, with the desktop actually sort of usable. with DiabloMiner (-f15 -w128 -z4 - which is apparently the sweet spot) i get very stable at 166 MH/sec, but an essentially unusable desktop. using Hashkill, i can actually open and use a web browser. i have a couple of questions... 1.) am i supposed to be getting 0% efficiency when mining solo? 2.) any settings recommendations for dedicated mining (i don't mind a much less usable desktop)? getworks, etc.? 3.) does Hashkill roll over its text cache, or should i set my terminal to a non-infinite scrollback? i don't want to fill up my tiny hard drive... thank you very much!

well, there's this: https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Mining_hardware_comparison...but what's "full load"? a stock card at 99%? a card with the MemClock knocked down to 300Mhz? is it over-volted? is the GPU over-clocked? a Kill-A-Watt is what you want.

Putting on 2 CD-R and Flash doesn't seem to be enough for 300,000K bitcoins. Maybe you can tease us by encrypting the wallet with TrueCrypt, give it a 20 char password, and post it here. You can be sure the wallet will continue to exist on the Internet and it will be safe.
I've always thought it'd be cool to have a torrent going with a bunch of wallets just in case governments make it a strategy to identify and destroy all the backups that a person might have, or in the case that someone goes into a comma for like a decade and after waking up realizes that all the other backups are gone for some reason. sort of like a wallet blockchain?

I'd suggest people use Venmo. perhaps i'm just thick, but after cruising the Venmo website i see no way to put in Bitcoin and get out USD. could you point me to where that is covered on the Venmo site?

What do you use to tweak your ATI GPU settings in Ubuntu? And why?
It depends on what you're trying to tweak. If you're just looking to overclock then aticonfig will do it. If you want to go more advanced and tweak voltage and lower clocks then you want AMDOverdriveCtl. If you're using AMDOverdriveCtl you really need to understand your BIOS limits and voltages being supplied to the card so you don't damage it. Thanks for that tip, grndzero!
