How do you pay for this if you have no fees?  You don't include transactions in your blocks so you don't get any transactions fees. Even if you did, they wouldn't pay for the server you must need.  What is your motivation? World Peace?  Huh
Where did you read he doesn't include transactions?  Also, there is still a 50BTC block subsidy.

Luke-jr does have lower variance by having people mine with him, but theres plenty of pools that are run for the benefit of Bitcoin over profit.
922  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: [340GH/s] p2pool: Decentralized, DoS-resistant, Hop-Proof pool on: March 27, 2012, 04:24:48 AM
Followup of my above post with some DeepBit numbers:
so I asked DeepBit and he said that the auto payout feature is 1 payout per day (but 3 manual payouts are possible but most people use auto)

If we calculate based on the 1 payout per day, then since DeepBit is around 3500GH/s that's about 48 blocks a day so most people are getting at most 1 payment per 48 blocks so using 1/48 of the previous calculated ratio: P2Pool is using 6 (rounded down from 6.4 to compensate for some manual payouts) times as much blockchain space as DeepBit is using per miner.

Even if you make the wildly ridiculous claim that everyone on DeepBit is using manual payments 3 times a day - P2Pool is still using twice as much blockchain space as DeepBit is using per miner.
How much of a problem is having a large number of small coinbase transactions?

If blockchain bloat becomes a problem maybe pools like p2pmining.com will gain more popularity.

924  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: question about address generation on: March 26, 2012, 06:34:43 PM
There are several ways to serialize EC public keys, as specified by the SEC specification. A summary:
* 0x00: The point at infinity
* 0x02 + x_coord: Compressed representation of a point with an even y_coord
* 0x03 + x_coord: Compressed representation of a point with an odd y_coord
* 0x04 + x_coord + y_coord: Uncompressed representation of a point

Up to 0.5.x, bitcoin always used uncompressed EC points (=public keys). Starting with 0.6.0, compressed public keys will be used for new or upgraded wallets.
Thanks for this.  I was trying to figure out how bitcoin was doing compressed public keys just last night.

I think there will be something better than BFL in May and something maybe 100x better this summer. If we sell GPUs now and buy BFL we can't resell the BFL later. We will be stuck. Sooner or later we will need to convert but I do not think now is the right time. GPUs will keep most of their value so no need to rush.
I fully agree.

I think building on top of the OTC web of trust is a good idea.  You could provide a web interface that makes it easy for less technical users to create and use GPG keys and rate other users.

I have a solution to the problem of being disappointed in a movie not being as good as the book---

Don't watch the movie.

I'll be celebrating. It's like marking the transition between the age of pi to the enlightened era of tau.

Good one ... http://tauday.com/

We can have a second party on genesis block anniversary ... Jan. 03, 2013 (3:1:13) just for good measure, 2 is better than one Smiley

Wow. Geometry and trig would have made so much more sense if I had read that back in High School.

My 5970 that has been running since June: 68.5C / 65.0C, 100% Fan, 830 / 280 and 825 / 280 at 1.05 volts.

My 5970 that has been running since this January: 54.5C / 51.0C, 90% Fan, 810 / 280 and 830 / 280 at 1.05 volts.

I want to get cgminer running with autofan and autogpu again, but phoenix was easier with BAMT.

man, don't be so lazy you just need to type 4 lines in BAMT.conf
It's more than that.  When I setup cgminer, the rig was really unstable.  Even with stock clocks.  Better to just use phoenix and have no more downtime,

Alright, c'mon is there anyone that knows the command? Your answer is worth Bitcoin...
I think "idgpu" is what you are looking for.  It plays with fan speeds so you can tell which card is which.
934  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: BAMT Quick Start Guide For Newbies! on: March 24, 2012, 06:50:17 AM
The FAQ says never to use sudo.  You should be logging in as the root user.  You will need to set passwords for both root and user.

You should also mention using coldreboot instead of the normal reboot command.
Will update in a min Thanks for pointing that out

Stupid faq, says not to use sudo yet you need to sudo to get the root pw set :@
If you are logged in as root, you can just use 'passwd' to change the pass.

I ssh in as root, then 'passwd' and then 'passwd user'
935  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: New I2P Blockchain??? on: March 23, 2012, 10:21:26 PM
How is tor any more block-able than I2P?  I haven't done much with I2P and am curious.  Tor seems to be doing a pretty good job of getting out of Iran and they are blocking ALL encrypted traffic.

937  Bitcoin / Armory / Re: Building Armory on OSX on: March 23, 2012, 06:17:30 PM
Figured I would respond to this here.

yes, consider it another donation.  Powerbook G4, OS 10.3.9.  other specs i don't recall offhand.  let me know.

Can you build universal binaries with it? Meaning PPC and Intel.

sorry, i wouldn't know.

I don't believe you can.  The Powerbooks are PowerPC, so I don't think they can compile for Intel. I'm also pretty sure that it is 32-bit.

The system I was talking about letting you borrow would be running Lion and could be setup with SSH and VNC.  If I can get a snow leopard VM up, I can get you remote access to that too.

I'll keep playing with py2app.  I'm reading through the docs and there is a "recipe" for sip but I have no idea to get it working.  I think that is the only problem left.  I'm using py2app with symlinks right now just fine.

The only problem is there are no images.  Its just a grey empty area where the logo should be.  I can submit a screenshot if you want.  It may just be a side effect of the dev py2app and so I wouldn't worry about it yet.

Also, I don't like having to replace the system links to python 2.7 with homebrew's.  I feel like that shouldn't be necessary.  I think DYLD_LIBRARY_PATH just needs to be set properly.  I'll experiment more after work.
938  Bitcoin / Armory / Re: Armory - The most advanced Bitcoin Client in existence! (v0.60-alpha) on: March 23, 2012, 07:49:05 AM
I use OSX 10.6.8 with Xcode 4.0.2

My guess is that Lion comes with Python 2.7 whereas Snow Leopard came with Python 2.6.
Thus I'm using Python 2.7 from Homebrew.

Maybe you can try to switch the OSX Python version with the one from Homebrew?
I got it loading!

Code:
sudo ln -s /usr/local/Cellar/python/2.7.2/lib/libpython2.7.dylib /usr/lib/libpython2.7.dylib

And then I had to rebuild bsddb3

Alright this is awesome. Now I just need to get my watching wallet on here.  I'll send another donation soon! Got to go to sleep now.

EDIT: Here is what I did.
Code:
Prerequisites:
Mac OS 10.7.3
Xcode 4.0.3
Homebrew (http://mxcl.github.com/homebrew/)

Install homebrew packages:
brew update
brew install ccache # optional
# set up your path for ccache by following homebrew's instructions
brew install python cryptopp swig sip qt pyqt berkeley-db

Create symlinks to the homebrew python installation:
sudo mv /usr/include/python2.7{,.orig}
sudo mv /usr/lib/python2.7{,.orig}
sudo mv /usr/lib/libpython2.7.dylib{,.orig}
sudo ln -s `brew --cellar python`/2.7.2/include/python2.7 /usr/include/python2.7
sudo ln -s `brew --cellar python`/2.7.2/lib/python2.7 /usr/lib/python2.7
sudo ln -s `brew --cellar python`/2.7.2/lib/libpython2.7.dylib /usr/lib/libpython2.7.dylib
========================================================
Install twisted:
`brew --prefix`/share/python/easy_install-2.7 twisted

Install bsddb3:
export BERKELEYDB_INCDIR=`brew --cellar berkeley-db`/5.3.15/include
`brew --prefix`/share/python/easy_install-2.7 bsddb3

Clone Armory source code:
cd ~
git clone git://github.com/etotheipi/BitcoinArmory.git
cd ~/BitcoinArmory

Make SWIG Modules
export PYTHONPATH=`brew --prefix`/lib/python2.7/site-packages:$PYTHONPATH
export CFLAGS=”-arch x86_64″
export ARCHFLAGS=”-arch x86_64″
cd ~/BitcoinArmory/cppForSwig
make swig

Run Armory:
cd ~/BitcoinArmory
python ArmoryQt.py

Too Awesome. Can't sleep.  I realized I can import my small satoshi wallet and so I sent you another coin.

EDIT: I ran 'py2applet --make-setup ArmoryQt.py' and then 'python setup.py py2app -A' and it makes ArmoryQt.app and it works! However, I can't get it to work without the -A flag, so it isn't actually distributable.

Code:
$ python setup.py py2app
running py2app
creating /Users/bwstitt/BitcoinArmory/build/bdist.macosx-10.4-x86_64/python2.7-standalone/app
creating /Users/bwstitt/BitcoinArmory/build/bdist.macosx-10.4-x86_64/python2.7-standalone/app/collect
creating /Users/bwstitt/BitcoinArmory/build/bdist.macosx-10.4-x86_64/python2.7-standalone/app/temp
creating /Users/bwstitt/BitcoinArmory/dist
creating build/bdist.macosx-10.4-x86_64/python2.7-standalone/app/lib-dynload
creating build/bdist.macosx-10.4-x86_64/python2.7-standalone/app/Frameworks
*** using recipe: virtualenv ***
error: /usr/local/bin/../Cellar/python/2.7.2/share/sip: No such file or directory

I know sip is needed for qt.

Code:
"""
This is a setup.py script generated by py2applet

Usage:
    python setup.py py2app
"""

from setuptools import setup

APP = ['ArmoryQt.py']
DATA_FILES = []
OPTIONS = {'argv_emulation': True, 'includes':['sip']}

setup(
    app=APP,
    data_files=DATA_FILES,
    options={'py2app': OPTIONS},
    setup_requires=['py2app'],
)

It builds now, but It crashes immediately.  So much for sleep Smiley

To see what you installed and when:
ls -ort /var/lib/dpkg/info/*.list | grep -i python

Nice. I remembered correctly.

Code:
-rw-r--r-- 1 root  465 Feb 10 19:11 /var/lib/dpkg/info/python-argparse.list
-rw-r--r-- 1 root 9.0K Feb 11 09:31 /var/lib/dpkg/info/python-pygame.list
-rw-r--r-- 1 root  23K Feb 11 09:31 /var/lib/dpkg/info/python-numpy.list
-rw-r--r-- 1 root  14K Feb 11 09:31 /var/lib/dpkg/info/python-imaging.list
-rw-r--r-- 1 root  55K Feb 11 09:37 /var/lib/dpkg/info/python-scipy.list
-rw-r--r-- 1 root  627 Feb 11 09:54 /var/lib/dpkg/info/python-rrdtool.list
940  Bitcoin / Armory / Re: Armory - The most advanced Bitcoin Client in existence! (v0.60-alpha) on: March 23, 2012, 07:37:34 AM
Pulled the changes.
Swig builds fine on my machine.
But ArmoryQt.py does abort with an error
...
You got further than I did. What kind of system are you running?

Code:
$ python ArmoryQt.py
********************************************************************************
Loading Armory Engine:
   Armory Version:       0.60
   PyBtcAddress Version: 1.00
   PyBtcWallet  Version: 1.35
Detected Operating system: Mac/OSX
   User home-directory   : /Users/bwstitt/Library/Application Support
   Satoshi BTC directory : /Users/bwstitt/Library/Application Support/Bitcoin/
   Satoshi blk0001.dat   : /Users/bwstitt/Library/Application Support/Bitcoin/blk0001.dat
   Armory home dir       : /Users/bwstitt/Library/Application Support/Armory/
Fatal Python error: Interpreter not initialized (version mismatch?)
Abort trap: 6

This is as far as I got when I got the -I and -L flags added to the Makefile.  I followed the directions, except I am running Mac Os 10.7.3 and Xcode 4.0.3.

I was running Xcode 4.0.1 before (didn't notice there were updates), and updating that got bsddb3 to install.

I also have ccache installed, but that shouldn't make a difference. It just saves me lots of time when I recompile.

If you get the RAM requirement down, I'd almost rather run Armory in a VM.  brew is nice, but yum and apt are a lot better since they install the system libraries instead of competing with them.
