921  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] Ethereum: Welcome to the Beginning on: August 05, 2016, 04:32:48 AM
I don't want to labour the point (over state this) about the effect of high crime activity reducing the willingness of people to set up businesses on a Network place.

But, if you read a basic Sociology book, nothing challenging e.g. A' Level standard (for people aged 16-18) it will run through statistics related geographical regions with higher levels of criminal activity and reduction in peoples willingness to build businesses there.

Essentially, it will explain the basics, places that become locations for high levels of criminal activity, see a corresponding reductions in people's willingness to build businesses in those places.

Places with low levels of criminal activity, have higher levels of people trying to build businesses there.

Clearly, this piece of Sociology will effect the Market Capitalisation of Crypto Currencies.

You made your point pretty clear, thank you. Now can you explain why ETH (the righteous fork) doesn't roll back other thefts and losses, just that one DAO thing?

a precedent has been set::

Do you want to be on the chain that is mutable or not

The ETC chain gives you that choice, and has a market vaule of over 100M supporting that choice.

so their is nothing to argue about the more immutable version ETC has a value proposition, much it seems to the chargin of the ETH only crowd, and disbelief. They did not appreciate the strength of what they were doing...code is law!

ETHEREUM (ETC) proved far more unstoppable than VB and ETH devs actually believed themselves

unless blocknet can accept and pay USD to and from my bank without a intermediary holding it, then its not the distributed exchange I am looking for...I know thats a big ask...but there it is the only way to put the exchange risk out of business
925  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Exchange insurance in BTC (sort of) on: August 03, 2016, 12:44:31 AM
if we take somewhere like kraken, the average of the maker/taker fee is 0.2% if we're making a rough estimate. they did 25,000 btc in volume today. that's 50 btc in fees, so 5 btc a day to put away. that don't feel like a lot to me but I guess it adds up over time.

sure, they make much more in fees with margin and dark pools and stuff but maybe we'd be surprised how modest their earnings are. whatever happens people need better than what's going on now.

ah no they go to 0.3 a day so they would put away 25BTC a day, which would be near 10K BTC a year. When they have enough funds to cover their entire BTC holdings they no longer use fee. Eg it would take 10 years or so, and they would hold 100K btc.
926  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Exchange insurance in BTC (sort of) on: August 03, 2016, 12:16:13 AM
Would it be possible that an exchange put away 0.1% of all trading profit to a cold wallet verifiable address, just in case of a Hack.

Now I realize this address itself could be hacked, but if it was held in multisig by trusted escrows, that should be pretty secure.

I also realize that is may encourage for insider jobs who just go meh, you have insurance, and this extra become trading margin becomes the excuse for higher fees, and less security.

However something like this if done right may attract a a lot more market share of trading and spread risk.

927  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Bitfinex HACKED- funds stolen ! on: August 03, 2016, 12:07:46 AM
Update,

the funds stolen are 119,756 btc. that means aprox 60 millions USD

Do you think that Bitfinex will cover this amount and it will business as usual? Smiley

no. I doubt they have any where near 60M usd, take their margin x volume of trading time to look at upper limit of profit.
928  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Bitfinex HACKED - funds stolen ! on: August 03, 2016, 12:05:41 AM
you should only keep a negligible % of BTC on an exchange at anyone time....

duck in and out to atemporalise you risk

(atemporalise I coined this word it mean spread risk through/by time, or make is less time dependent)
929  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: ETC on Polo on: July 27, 2016, 01:28:30 AM
its not really free money as the ETH price has dropped, and you don't know if ETC will take over ETH....

so risk abounds
930  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Ethereum Passes Its Defining Test with Flying Colors on: July 27, 2016, 01:25:07 AM
ETC does look more origonal than ETH

Eg those with ETC are saying we will not be changed by some central authority.

I feel much safer with a smart DOA coder than being open to central manipulation by a gov...gotta say, or your just back to fiat
931  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: DAO Attacker Owns 10% Of All ETC on: July 27, 2016, 01:22:21 AM
The ETC DAO guy played by the rules...the DAO investors had fair warning and took risks

I see nothing wrong with this. The ETC 10% guy was smarter so what.

I kinda feel ETC is more trust worthy than ETH as it did not hard fork

I actually don't think this was a classic PandDu

it was what 2 years in the makeing....no..they could have pump and dumped much earlier if it was the case....why wait?

Most PandDu's go in a few months then out.
935  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: NEM - Totalitarian Censorship & Poorly Run Community on: June 30, 2016, 01:40:35 AM
Hi All

So I, along with at least 30 other people that I have come across in the last few months, have invested in the NEM ICO.

They had a redemption period, effectively, of just a few months - with very poor communication - and many people missed this - the result was that they simply kept those people's stakes and just told them sorry when they come looking to redeem or get more involved.

Well, since I have gotten involved in their forum, and helped clean up some dead links and old sites that made NEM look bad, even though I was denied my stake.

And now... Poof. My whole email domain is blocked from registering on the forum, my account is deleted and all my IP addresses that I've used on the forum are blacklisted (I share public IPs with a few hundred other ISP customers from the various buildings where I access the internet) - completely from registering or logging in!

And all my old posts are WIPED!

CAN YOU BELIEVE THAT?! NEM - Egalitarian? Wow.

Now this has gotten me thinking - if a "movement" with such a bad attitude can get so much traction - just imagine what a good community with the same sort of notions, and more ability to include people and better powers of execution can do... and one that actually has some good grounding to stand on.  An added benefit would be to make good to people who can prove that they have been sidelined from the NEM "hyprocrite" community.

I am investigating ways that I can win back the dignity of those of us who "donated" to NEM, and got only abuse and insult in return.

Are there any of you reading this? Do you have any ideas? I have now given up on NEM to make good, so lets band together and figure out something for ourselves?

I would like to try to create what we saw in NEM - but what in NEM seems to only an empty promise.

Are you a well standing member of the NEM community itself? Do you condone this behaviour of your moderators and those running your project? I would hope not, and I would urge you to think where that could lead and act accordingly... doesn't this just fly in the face of everything Cryptocurrency and especially an "Egalitarian" one, stands for? Would you like to see competition rise out of those you sidelined? Or would you be willing to start a fund and donate some of your stake to that fund, to make good with the > 2% of your community that you cut out just because they were tending to other things?... Huh

Congrats NEMsters!
Thanks NEM Team!
Today is NEM's 100 million day!

NEM's market cap is only 1/11 of ETH market cap.
NEM is more excellent than ETH.
It means NEM is still undervalued as 1/11 of fair mairket cap.
NEM is in the beginning of rising up march.  Cheesy

I gotta say its looking good....

much less bad feeling around NEM than ETH/DOA
938  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: NEM (XEM) Official Thread - 100% New Code - Easy To Use APIs on: June 26, 2016, 03:12:28 AM
I wonder if among other things the initial distribution is really helping here

I'm not sure there was a coin with a better distribution, also a very health dev fund....

and a good implementation...

gotta say I am impressed by NEM

If you are from UK, will you exchange your money into Bitcoin tonight?
Maybe too late, but think about it, German/France will punish UK to make it a bad example, so that protect their precious Union. pound will fall more.

and make all those goods and services from the UK that much cheaper!
