9221  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: How to prevent 51% ATTACK on new coin on: June 21, 2018, 06:02:40 AM
Just contributing my thoughts here. The key is to identify the motivating factor for a 51% attack. Which really just boils down to economic profit. Of course, this takes the assumption that an attacker is rational.

Starting with the estimate value of the coin, the aim is simply to make a 51% "economically unfeasible".

User above suggests not listing and this can be effective if you're not looking to put your coin on the open market (actually a coin without market is practically safe from 51% attacks if it serves no other purpose).

As value grows, you assume this is because of adoption, recognised use, a more widespread network of nodes. Coins that didn't grow organically are especially susceptible, just read about all the past 51% attacks this year. None gained adoption the way Bitcoin did...

A lot of people are launching these attacks to sabotage the competition and economic gain from the 51% attack alone, is not their primary goal. If you have a lot of hashing power and you can pull off a successful attack on a new Alt coin, then that Alt coin will suffer a public humiliation and it will taint their reputation.

The successful attack might also partly fund the cost of that attack, so it is a WIN/WIN situation for the attacker. There are currently a lot of competition in the Alt coin scene and people will fight dirty to get to the top.  Angry
9222  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2018-06-19] Coming ‘Reckoning’ Will Shake up ICO Market: CBOE President on: June 21, 2018, 05:50:24 AM
It is very unfortunate that the scam ICOs spoiled the party for all of those legitimate ICOs out there. The SEC would have never got involved if there were not large amounts of scams in the ICO scene. Regulations will surely become a barrier to entry for a lot of smaller ICOs, when they have to go through the lengthy procedure to register, to trade in securities.

The positive thing will obviously be a reduction in scam ICOs in the future. <USA>
9223  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Power consumption of Bitcoin mining on: June 21, 2018, 05:37:51 AM
Would you consider the use of the most powerful GPUs in the world for gaming, more wasteful than running those GPUs to sustain a global currency? Those GPUs are currently being used for fun, where the hashing power could have been used more productively to sustain a few thousand global Crypto currencies.  Roll Eyes

Most of the ASICs in development today are geared to energy efficiency and the mining farms are powered by renewable energy sources, like hydro/Wind/Solar energy.  Wink
9224  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Is bitcoin a "private" currency? on: June 21, 2018, 05:26:13 AM
Who would have thought that a question that was asked in 2011, would still be relevant today. I think if you applied this to the Blockchain, then you would call the Bitcoin Blockchain, <Public> and all of these other Blockchain based technologies, <Private>

When there is <Public> participation in the decision making process via a consensus based model, then Bitcoin qualify as a <Public> currency, but when a centralized decision model is followed, then I would call that a <Private> Blockchain.

This is a very important distinction that will become more important in the future.  Angry
9225  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: For Newbies Like Me : It's not all about the ranks and merits. on: June 20, 2018, 07:06:50 AM
Just a side note :

Not ALL newbies to this forum is new to Crypto currencies and Bitcoin. Some have been lurking in the shadows and gaining knowledge before they joined or some have been in the scene, but they have been active on other platforms.

I have seen excellent posts coming from some newbie accounts and these might have been sock puppet accounts or people who have just stumbled onto this site for the first time.

Agreed, most newbie accounts are from people who are new to the forum, but there are some exceptions to the norm. So just keep in mind that not all newbies have to follow the same strategy, when they join this forum.  Wink
9226  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Do you own a shitcoin? lol Find out. on: June 20, 2018, 06:54:47 AM
You should have several outputs for anything that is not listed on your database. If someone typed in something that was not in your "Shitlist", then you should have several different responses, like :

"Was that a Typo?"

"If it is not on our database, then it is shit."

"re-type the next Shitcoin, this one is not listed."

"We missed this shitcoin, but we will add it to the list."

I enjoyed the site and I think you should add a bunch of disclaimers to protect yourself from the shit storm that might come from this, when the developers of these coins revolt. ^lol^

9227  Economy / Speculation / Re: This price drop has occured before on: June 20, 2018, 06:28:23 AM
I also feel that this is a storm in a cup and that the drop in the price is just a correction from a heavily manipulated price increase in 2017. There are also a lot of good things happening on the development side with the Lightning Network and institutional capital has not even touched Bitcoin yet.

Bitcoin weathered most of the storm with the SEC investigations and also the small hack that occurred on one of the Asian exchanges and also the ban on Crypto currency advertisements on social media platforms.  Wink
9228  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Why was the last bitcoin growth surprising for every one? on: June 20, 2018, 06:14:04 AM
I think for you to understand this, you have to look at what is happening with the Tesla stocks at the moment. A lot of people are taking a short selling position with borrowed stocks. To make it even easier to understand, I will include an article that was written about Tesla : https://cleantechnica.com/2018/06/18/coming-tesla-tsla-short-squeeze-will-stock-go-supernova-in-3-weeks-elon-implies-it-will/

It is a high risk investment strategy and people shorting Tesla have lost a lot of money.  Roll Eyes
9229  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Analyst say bitcoin will Obsolete one day. on: June 20, 2018, 05:50:59 AM
Let's clarify: He didn't say Bitcoin will be obsolete one day, he said blockchain technology will be. He also said that it will be on the basis that intelligence agencies will be able to decrypt it. Well, good luck with that I suppose.

I do think blockchain technology being obsolete is an inevitability though, but unlike Friedman, I think it's going to take a couple of lifetimes, and it's going to be because of a similar but superior technology being invented.

The great thing about Bitcoin is that it is adaptable to any threat, because it is programmable code. When the intelligence agencies come up with a method to decrypt it <using quantum computers> then developers just improve the encryption techniques to make it harder to decrypt it.

Most of the current security features are built on the same technology that Bitcoin is built on, so these technologies would also be exploited. <Secure websites / Private email services / ATM technologies / Bank networks>  Roll Eyes

I think the basic principle of Signing a message is going over his head. Most users of this site has no idea how to sign a Bitcoin address and you can explain until you are blue in the face. A lot of them are using wallet and exchange services that do not allow for the signing of the addresses, so you will never get a signed address from them.

Hope that clears things up.  Wink

I understand that bit. The bit I'm having a problem with is how his account could be hacked.

Quote
they changed the bitcoin address, and steal from me 200k sat.

How could he know that if he didn't still have access to the account? How did someone change the withdrawal address if he didn't acknowledge the confirmation email?

He might have initiated a Password change after they hacked his account and then regained control of his Freebitco.in account or the hacker left the password unchanged and just changed the Bitcoin address to re-direct the funds and then left.

I have to say it is a lot of trouble for 200k satoshi. <about $13>  Roll Eyes  Not saying that it did not happen, but I would not go through all that trouble to get my hands on $13.  Grin   The Mixer fees will absorb most of that money to mix and use those coins.  Grin
9231  Economy / Speculation / Re: What kind of price movement do you want for Bitcoin? on: June 20, 2018, 05:30:04 AM
I'm fine with today's market. I am only doing long term planning and the best way to buy the average of the market is to dollar cost average every month with a fixed amount of money.

It's near impossible to lose that way. I am not in for the quick profits but look to build up wealth in a slower but more steady manner. It requires a lot patience, but it's definitely worth it.

People chasing quick profits mostly end up losing everything quickly. Some times people need to realize that the risks don't always outweigh the potential profits. Crypto is serious business, not a joke.

The sooner people realize that losing isn't fun the sooner they will stop with all that altcoin nonsense.

The best trading environment for both a long-term and short-term trading strategy and to increase adoption, is for Bitcoin to have a slow and steady increase in the price. Investors want to see their investment growing and new traders want to enter at any time and still make a healthy profit.

A lot of people says that the goal should be long-term, but 70.6% of the poll is asking for small weekly increases.  Grin
9232  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Gambling Addiction Stories! on: June 19, 2018, 07:32:49 AM
A friend from work has a gambling problem and he banned himself from the Brick n Mortar casinos. The security guards at the entrance will be informed from the CCTV operators when he arrives at the entrance and then they will deny him entrance.

He lost almost everything, including his wife and kids and this was the turning point for him. He told me that he realized that he had a problem, when he took the food budget to go gambling and his wife and kids had no money for food. They left and he had to pay for a expensive divorce and he has to pay Alimony or he will go to jail.

He has stopped completely and is working on resolving the broken bridges with his ex-wife and kids.  Sad

the letter does not come to the specified e-mail
if it's not you, it means good hacker took pity on me)))

Lol, why would a hacker do that. In my eyes, your account was never hacked. Anyway glad you have your account back; change your password and put on 2FA.

I've got no idea what this one is on about. None of it makes any sense. If 2FA is not on you need an email confirmation to change the password or withdrawal address, so none of the things he says are possible.

I think the basic principle of Signing a message is going over his head. Most users of this site has no idea how to sign a Bitcoin address and you can explain until you are blue in the face. 9234  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: [Wanted] Paint removal on Adult pics - Pay per pixel with LN? on: June 19, 2018, 07:08:20 AM
Do you think this will work?
In theory, "YES" but in reality, "NO".
- Personally, I can't see someone paying money to unlock an adult/nude picture (partly/whole), when they can easily search the internet and see such stuff for free.

I disagree. Some of the stuff is unique per site and also Copyrighted. This can succeed if you link this to a "request a pose" feature.

Your favourite model can post a preview and the users on the site can request a pose. If they want to see the new posed picture, they have to pay to remove the virtual paint? <Hope I understand this correctly OP?>

You can even make this a community feature, where users combine efforts to uncover pictures for the community pool of pictures. If you are a VIP member, then you have access to the community pool of pictures that was uncovered.

I think this is a very good idea, if you can get unique content. <Amateur stuff>  Grin

Bitcoin could 'bring the internet to a halt,' banking group warns

Don't bet on bitcoin ever replacing the dollar or other traditional currencies as everyday money.

That's one of the messages from a new report by an organization that represents dozens of the world's central banks.

The group, Switzerland-based Bank for International Settlements (BIS), said the "intense interest" in bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies had prompted it to look "beyond the hype" at what use they could actually contribute to the economy.

The report's authors were unimpressed, detailing a range of problems with trying to adopt cryptocurrencies as a widely used form of money.

They include the danger that just processing all the payments "could bring the internet to a halt," said the report, which was published Sunday.

Did we expect any other response from a institution that are hanging on their fingertips to survive? Bitcoin has disrupted all these international settlement institutions and now they are lashing out against Bitcoin in an attempt to stop it.

They have obviously not heard about the Lightning Network and off-chain transactions. Before these idiots make clueless statements like this, they have to do some homework first. )o(
9236  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Had Satoshi Nagamoto made himself public, would BTC be where it is today? Why? on: June 19, 2018, 06:08:53 AM
Bitcoin was born from a Cypherpunk movement with strong anonymity principles. They do this for a reason, because they are challenging the norm and also the governments that are enforcing that norm. Back in those days, governments had a zero tolerance on the public printing their own currency, so Satoshi had to stay anonymous to prevent these governments from prosecuting him and throwing him into jail.

If he did reveal his identity, he would be in jail and Bitcoin would have suffered a early downfall. People would not have used the currency, in fear of being prosecuted by these authorities.  Shocked
9237  Economy / Speculation / What kind of price movement do you want for Bitcoin? on: June 19, 2018, 05:56:42 AM
Last year was one of my best trading years in Bitcoin and it was not because of the huge spike in the price towards the end of the year.

The price was steadily going upwards in small increments and I could buy low and sell high, almost on a weekly basis. Then something happened and the price went crazy and reached a ATH of +/- $19000.

I enjoyed the steady growth, because I could make small weekly profits. Now everything is upside down and with the same strategy I would be losing money on a weekly basis.  Angry

I was wondering what price movement would suit your investment strategy in Bitcoin the best?

I understand the economy and that something that was inflated like that, would have to go through a correction phase, but when will things go back to normal, so that we can start making small profits again?
9238  Economy / Speculation / Re: What do you think about the current market? on: June 19, 2018, 05:45:08 AM
I think it sucks! A steady increase in the price will help to build investor confidence and more people will invest as it goes up. The huge spike of last year, destroyed my strategy to buy low and to sell at a slightly higher price every week. I made smaller profits every week, but now the market was turned upside down and the price is doing the exact opposite of what it did last year.  Angry

Let's hope it bottomed out now and that the trend of last year of small weekly increases will repeat it self this year.  Roll Eyes
9239  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: CUBAAZ - Official Press Release June 2018 on: June 18, 2018, 10:33:31 AM
What is it exactly that puts you apart from other travel search websites on the internet? I watched your promo video and I read some more info on your site, including the ICO but I cannot see why you are better than any other search websites? It looks like the recent trend is for companies to add "Blockchain" technology to their concept to make it more marketable.  Huh

Please feel free to highlight the core differences between your service and the rest Huh
9240  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2018-06-17] Bitcoin Price To Reach $60,000 In 2018 on: June 18, 2018, 10:17:05 AM
Bitcoin's enemies has started to focus their attacks on the forces that push up the price. The SEC has started to investigate price manipulation, because they know this is one of the things that supports Bitcoin's growth. The enemy has also targeted social media to influence them into banning Crypto currency related advertisements and slowing the growth.

This is all done in an attempt to strangle the life out of Crypto currencies and to slow it down and to prevent a new upsurge in the price. So I doubt if we are going to see a repeat of last year.  Roll Eyes
