9261  Economy / Gambling / Re: Sportsbooks that aren’t paying out on Biden winning the US Presidential Election on: December 18, 2020, 11:28:32 PM
I don't have any skin in the game but am curious what these sites who have already paid out would do if somehow Trump's lawyers worked some sort of legal magic to actually keep him in the white house.  I wonder if they would then pay out the other side of the bet or would even have the reserves left to do so.  Would they then confiscate all the BTC on their platform and disappear, or try to use future user fees to stay in business?  It would be interesting to watch for sure and if I held a lot of funds on some gambling site that had already paid out based on the election results, I would keep a watchful eye on the situation and consider withdrawing anything I couldn't afford to lose.
9262  Economy / Collectibles / Re: [WTS] My Casascius Collection on: December 18, 2020, 11:22:18 PM
Willing to entertain offers in the neighborhood of 45 BTC.

Would also consider offers around a million dollars in USD at current rates if someone wanted to arrange this.  We could set it up through a lawyer and use an established escrow agency.
9263  Other / Meta / Re: [BPIP] Forum-based Playing / Trading Cards on: December 18, 2020, 11:05:42 PM
Some questions that come to mind...

Would you be asking users for their permission prior to being featured?

Would you be paying a licensing fee or royalties to the users whose images you would use on these cards similar to how sports cards work with athletes?  If not, how will you gauge which user images may have copyrights?  Will there be a legal entity behind these cards to resolve issues such as these?

Do you feel that project developers being in DT and selling products and services that are heavily influenced by actions of DT members is a conflict of interest?

EDIT: suchmoon's response below answers none of these questions so now I'm wondering if any of these issues have even been thought of prior to announcement.
9264  Other / Meta / Re: Green hover color for bitcointalk.org links on: December 18, 2020, 10:47:46 PM
Yes, we see you brought this up back then - nice job!

Thanks!  It is a bit curious that this warning was left out of the system to seemingly focus on positivity, and then the next addition was trust flags that are purely negative.

I can see not wanting to label every outside link with a warning as that would seemingly be harmful to business here.  A better compromise to my previous idea would be to only make outside links red that are disguised using the url command.  That way users could post outside links without them being red so long as the link was displayed naturally.  If they try to disguise the link's true destination by using the url command, it would display as red, warning the user that the actual destination is not being displayed and needs to be checked.

Example:
Check out this cool new way to donate: Donate to Bitcointalk (link would be red)
Check out this cool new way to donate: https://bitcointalk.org/donate.html (link is green)
Check out this cool website that I like: https://www.wandera.com/signs-youve-been-phished/ (link is normal)

The more I've started seeing this feature in use, the more I'm wondering if it is backwards...

This appears to be a warning system, correct?  I feel like it is warning you that the link you are clicking is good.  Maybe a better idea would be making the non bitcointalk.org links red?  This way when someone is heading off site they are warned, instead of it appearing normal.  It would also be a reminder to open a new tab, instead of leaving bitcointalk when I click a link.  Smiley

This topic seems to be back in discussion so I thought it should probably be done on the appropriate thread.  Smiley

Feel free to help report off-topic posts to moderators by using the link in the lower right corner of the post.

Now let's get back on topic and dole out some merit!

9270  Other / Meta / Re: Suggestion: make external links bright red on: December 18, 2020, 12:45:56 AM
I made this suggestion several years ago.  Theymos didn't like the negative connection with red and links, so the inside links were left green and the outside links left normal.  This was back when negativity in the community wasn't appreciated though, so maybe revisiting my idea now that negativity seems acceptable in the community might be good.  Maybe try using the search function next time?

This signature couldn't be verified so I could not give you any merit.  You also have the ability to "verify" these signatures on your end using the same software you used to sign it.  Please check to make sure your signature can be verified before posting it here to avoid having to wait to hear from someone that it can't be verified to try again.

If anyone wanted to help point out posted signatures like this that can't be verified, I would be appreciative.
9272  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: [Merit] Hey Bitcoiners! Can You Send Encrypted Messages? on: December 18, 2020, 12:20:57 AM

That thread is about staking Bitcoin addresses.  This thread is about learning to send encrypted messages.  You seem confused as your response is completely off topic.  As for using merit as a carrot, I'm not the one who was removed as a merit source, you were.

Let's keep this thread on topic.  Users are trying to learn a new skill here.

Hey Newbies (& Jr Members)! I want to give you the opportunity to earn some merit by using your Bitcoin client (or whatever you use). There is a great guide linked below showing you how to sign a message. If you can sign a message from your Bitcoin address with your bitcointalk username, post it here and I will send you merit. Enjoy!

Anyone wishing to comment about potential abuse of my generosity on this thread, please read my response below:

I believe your good nature in this undertaking has been abused right from the start:

Indeed.  That is what this community does and isn't limited to merit.  If what you say is happening in this thread is true, then it is a very good example of how this forum is allowing scammers to make multiple accounts to abuse the system for their own benefit at the cost of generous members offering their time and resources to help others.  If you think people are willing to go far to earn a merit, imagine the kind of nonsense occurring to get multiple accounts into the DT network to inflate their trust ratings and punish those who stand up against them.

I didn't make this thread to cast assumptions about users or try to catch them making alt accounts.  I'm not foolish enough to think that's possible with the tools I have access to.  Certainly the alt account issue is something this forum's administration should be taking care of, especially given the way the trust network is setup and it's perceived importance among it's lower tier members.  I hope that if this is the turn this thread is taking, maybe it can show just how bad of a problem alt account abuse is, and why this decentralized forum policing system was doomed before it was launched as the alt account abuse problem wasn't taken care of and instead the abusers were empowered with the new system.  I also wonder why the infamous forum police around here are not tagging these members if they are abusing alt accounts to earn merit, as they certainly tag many users for less.  There are many here that claim their ability to tag abusers with negative trust is their contribution to the Bitcoin community, yet when I look at the accounts I supposedly shouldn't be giving merit to because they're abusers, I see no negative trust.

Looks like I’ll have to create a moderated thread to keep the crazies out if I want to continue offering merit to those of you who need it.

Hey OgNasty, this message was signed from an address that's being use by Brainwallet for demo purposes. There are many other members who staked this address but it's only used once here. You can check hosseinimr93's investigation https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5300127.0

I have already ignored that user since their post due to their activity so there's not much more I can do at this point.  I don't care about staking though and don't really feel your comment is relevant (LoyceV seems to, but that's no surprise as he's pretty clueless).  I care if the user can post a signed message with their username and hope that any misuse will come to light by the forum investigators who live for these types of threads that are rich with information they can use.

Let's try to keep this thread on topic.  If you have concerns about users posting here, feel free to PM me.  I likely won't respond but I'll check to make sure I've already ignored any troublemakers so they do not get any further merit or attention from me.
9278  Economy / Reputation / Re: DT1 and DT2 members who have negative feedback (or are banned) on: December 15, 2020, 11:34:47 PM
Also interesting that OgNasty was sending trust ratings on the very first day the trust system was announced despite not knowing anything about it:

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=trust;u=18321;page=sent;offset=340

That's interesting?  I knew what everyone knew after it was released and it was obvious how to leave a trust rating...  What I didn't know was that I was chosen as a DT member without my knowledge so that every person I distrusted (excluded their ratings from my network) for leaving dishonest ratings would team up and try to damage my reputation and the reputation of any project I choose to support as retaliation for their inappropriate behavior being excluded from the network.  I especially didn't think the person who thrust me into this position without my knowledge or approval would eventually empower these inappropriately behaving users to attack me and take no personal responsibility in the matter.  That not withstanding, I feel sorry for the users such as yourself that missed the bitcointalk golden era.  It was so awesome and everyone was so supportive of each other and willing to assist building projects.  It was such an amazing time that I'm still willing to put up with the trolling here and continue to do the right thing in the face of harassment as a thank you to Bitcoin.  Maybe had you been around for it you wouldn't be such a negative presence here and would know how to act right and encourage others to build on Bitcoin instead of trying to tear apart new users who don't behave according to your agenda.

One of these days when the dust has settled, we'll maybe know the story behind these people and what the forum and the fights on it meant to them each personally.

OG and Vod have this legendary rivalry that keeps popping up in the forum. Lauda has now long gone. New players keep dropping in and leaving. How can one forget QS? I wish someone someday will make a documentary about it all. Hope the narrative will be how things happened and not a biased viewpoint.

Often through these debates, it has always seemed like one man's truth was another man's lie.

It isn't a legendary rivalry.  Vod is a liar who trolls me because he has no life and is desperately seeking some form of relevance.  You would be disappointed with a documentary on the subject.  I spend a vast majority of my day sitting behind a screen working on various projects that are mostly non-Bitcoin related.  If it wasn't for the activity metric and lack of interesting community projects here as a result of the horrendous atmosphere that has been created, I would likely ignore him completely like I did for many years before this place became what it now is.
9279  Economy / Reputation / Re: DT1 and DT2 members who have negative feedback (or are banned) on: December 14, 2020, 10:26:03 PM
Your lack of experience on this forum is showing again.
Lol. If you want me to respond to this, please create a topic in which it's not off-topic.

The best part is that right after he says you have no experience, he proceeds to explain how his lack of knowledge of how the system works is his excuse for misusing it.

Priceless.

That’s because I was here before it was created and no information or notification was given prior to it being created. Therefore nobody knew what it was at the time and had to search out information on it once it appeared. Thanks for also sharing your ignorance. It’s great to be attacked by people who have absolutely no idea what they’re talking about, which is how I’d describe my last several years here. So much facepalm. If only people were knowledgeable enough to realize it. You’d be better served listening to my experience and learning from it than trying to pick it apart with semantics.
