9421  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: scrypt is "memory intensive" therefore no ASICs, but how? on: May 24, 2013, 01:23:24 AM
It quickly became a paperweight.
A $10,000 paperweight.

That sucks, but it must have been cool to create something like that. Sure, it had a flaw, but still. I'd love to have the hardware knowledge to handle creating new things.

The best time for a person to sell is when they make up their mind to sell. That's what makes a market. It there wasn't any sellers willing to sell, there wouldn't be any buyers that could buy.

This is true. Supply vs demand. It's basic but true!
9424  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Exchange accidentally sent 512 bitcoins after coding error on: May 24, 2013, 01:12:59 AM
that is awesome.  i would not give them back.  that is his mistake.  welcome to the real world.  no mtv

Case closed. Fact proven. Lets see how many others say they would not return them.

I would return them, but that's just because it's how I am. I understand mistakes happen. We're humans.

I do agree that the code should have been fully tested before going live though. On that side I feel he brought this upon himself.
9425  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: Butterflylabs Huge SCAM on: May 23, 2013, 11:26:22 PM
I was (luckily?) too poor to order mining rig at the time, and heck, my friends was gathering resources to actually set their own medium sized farm but gave it a pass since they did some research on ASICs but it's somewhat short-sighted to neglect mining coins because of high difficulty ratio and new technology coming in.
First of all, with good rig you can always mine silver and bronze for few days and just store your earnings on a stock/vault or just in pocket, if ship hit the fan, you can either panic and sell coins or take a risk and keep them. And I'm still talking about silver and bronze!
Secondly, even if a newer technology marches in it will take the spotlight and mining per se will open spots for mining to the new users. And again, if BTC difficulty is too high, why not try other ones? Of course, you can get in another scheme or strange coins like YAC but still, for the few days after some signs of upcoming events few not informed buyers will eventually buy those, especially if you will sell them for few cents lower than others. I mean come on! Why do I know market tricks and still don't own at least 100BTC? hahaha

I doubt they are a total scam. They aren't doing great by any means, but I honestly believe they will eventually fill all of their orders. I don't think they anticipated the response they got.

If the problem was the number of orders, they could have at any point stopped taking them. That's what any reputable business does. If you go to a store and they don't have what you want so you get a raincheck, they don't say "pay me now and we'll give it to you when we get it." They let you keep your money and pay AFTER they get it.
Pandora a gaming hand-held/unix emulator console was like that- they stopped taking orders when they did reach they factory quota and that was great marketing move. I still think Pandora was managed by honest and responsible guys, not only crazy and greedy geeks wanting to sell overpriced emulator.

Just to add on because I'm thinking about other cases where this happens... Amazon. If you pre-order or purchase something and they find that it isn't in stock, they will not charge you until the order has actually shipped (and at any point prior to actually being in the mail, you can cancel it).

What BFL did wasn't sell something. It wasn't allowing pre-orders either. What they did is secretly run a crowd sourcing campaign without telling everyone. Crowd sourcing fits this profile perfect (company needs money to develop items, so people donate in exchange for the finished items). It's shady, considering they never notified people that it was what they were getting into (at least not that I know of, based on responses from people).

They probably refund some portions to maintain the image of good company. Besides those who paid with services like earlier mentioned PayPal, got some buyer protection as well to force them to get theirs money back.

I wonder how many people paid with BTC... ?

Good point. Something to consider is that by offering refunds back, they know only a small selection of people would request one. Hearing about the refunds makes everyone more at ease, meaning new people are making purchases. It is a smart thing to do if you want to scam even more people.

This isn't to say that they are scamming. I haven't gotten involved with them so I don't have personal experience with them. Just saying that refunds aren't necessarily a sign that they are legitimate.
9428  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Anyone know if I can switch my rigs PSUs over to 220V? on: May 23, 2013, 10:13:38 PM
it is STill the same number of watts, it is not magic you do not get anything for free......
Mmmm not quite. Most PSUs will run More efficient on a 220V line.

It's still the same wattage being drawn by the cards, that much is true. But, at the same wattage and higher voltage, the amps go down, which means less heat (heat = wasted energy). This lowers are draw from the wall, and can lower your bill. Only by 1-2%, but still...

EDIT: fixed a crucial mistake, and fixed a typo.

I was not aware of this. The lower heat would also mean less cooling required and longer part life though, wouldn't it? If so, I think that benefit alone would be worth it. Unless it's only a small amount of heat that is reduced.

got refund 3days ago. thank god

How do you get a refund?

You send them a polite email.

"Dear BFL team,

Unfortunately, with the Bitcoin market going crazy concerning regulations and crackdowns on exchanges, I feel uneasy with my investment. In the light of circumstances I would like to request a refund of my order number XYZ1111.

For your future business, I wish you all the best and success. If there are any necessary steps for you for my refund, please let me know so I can accomodate the transfer.

Best regards,
the customer."

Some will say this is unbelievably polite. I say you want money back from them, so dont be an asshole.

Perfectly executed as well. Those who are offensive in their messages will put the reader in a defensive state. This causes them to have much less of a chance to work with you. I know how a lot of people here feel, but rudeness decreases your chances of success.

I can't get on at all.... I get an 'egenisis server not defined" type message.

Odd. Have you tried deleting your installation and reinstalling it? I'm still on it quite often.
9432  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How Do You Explain Bitcoin to Non-Technical People? on: May 23, 2013, 05:03:57 PM
I really like this explanation of a room full of locked clear piggy-banks

Wow, and there goes our answer. After reading through that, it really does explain it all very well. Saving that link to share when trying to explain things to people, Smiley.
9433  Economy / Gambling / Re: ApopheniaBTC - Bet and solve the challenges to win BTC. on: May 23, 2013, 04:56:23 PM
Is it possible (I was reading about the issue with people putting in too detailed of answers) of using some kind of wildcards? For example, if you have a picture of Lassie and you wanted the answer of a dog, someone who put in "Lassie the dog" would still ping as correct since the system would find "dog" in it.

There is a big problem with this. There is no way to distinguish a user that gives a detailed answer, from a user that submits multiple answers.

For example he could be recognizing that it is a dog and then, since I would be asking for a character name, start listing all dog names in one answer, like: "lassie jack brucie bingo hatchie".

Maybe I could only allow the answer to be a prefix of the string but this would again not solve the problem. Let's suppose I accept "lassie" and "lassie x" where x any word or words. This would be good for answers like "lassie the dog", but what about answers like "baby lassie"?
Then I would need to start accepting "x lassie" too, which I bet would lead to having users double betting all the time like "lassie brucie" <- two answers in one bet, if one is correct then the user wins the pot. This would be a big problem.

Yeah, I can see the problem with that... off the top of my head I really can't think of any good solutions for it that wouldn't be exploitable. I could just see someone getting irritated because there was a picture of like a computer and someone said "computer" but it was really supposed to be "desktop."

I guess if the hints at least lead people in the right way of understanding how it should be answered it should be fine.
9434  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Wasted Computing Power on: May 23, 2013, 04:51:33 PM
I would totally mine an alt-coin like F@C (Folding at Home Coin) or S@C (SETI at Home Coin). I see the inherent value in security and "acting like the banking system" but can also see how a currency could benefit us beyond the decentralization.

I read before that none of these would work (folding while also mining). I love the concept though and I have faith that someone, somewhere, can find a way to make it work. If people can send a rocket up to Mars and control the robot while still on earth, I'm sure something like this should be simple.
9435  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Ending bankruptcies, unemployment, and poverty on: May 23, 2013, 04:49:23 PM
Bankruptcies are natural part of business. The problem is results from them. Without them there would be lot of inefficiency, which would mean employment, but on other hand also poverty.

Governments don't do good job, but I don't believe other options are better just yet...

It would also affect our technological evolution, as companies would be much less willing to risk new things. Most of the items we get in stores are based on someone feeling confident enough to risk everything in order to go for it. I don't know what a lack of bankruptcies would do but I have the feeling it would be a big problem.
9436  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Ending bankruptcies, unemployment, and poverty on: May 23, 2013, 04:35:47 PM
This is why I am involved in Bitcoin:

Quote
The economy is not a machine.  It is an ecology made of biological organisms -- humans.  It is far too complex for any government to fully understand or improve, but governments try to do this.  They play God.  The result is bankruptcies, unemployment and poverty for millions of good people who have never harmed anyone.

The Clipper Ship Strategy, Richard J. Maybury

I somewhat agree. There are things the government should be involved with, and others they shouldn't. I think Bitcoin is on the "shouldn't" list simply because it allows us to vote (in a sense) on how things work and how inflation/deflation are dealt with. Everyone that has coins is part owner of the entire thing, so I view it as being like a company and we own stocks.

Wow, that is VERY helpful. Thanks for the heads-up!
9438  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin banks? on: May 23, 2013, 03:53:19 PM
putting the bitcoin into a third party service such as a bank is countering the point of decentralisation. and here is why.

1) trusting any third party to look after your funds requires trust, insurances, and full disclosure of that persons life, and legal contracts to ensure of limitation of losses.

2) for safety i would never say trust a third person to look after your funds. instead there are products that do not touch other people in which you can store your private keys on for safe storage: BitSafe, USB memory stick, paper..... need i say more

3) there will be services to make transactions of pocketmoney amounts easier such as escrow services which can ensure payments to merchants by having it pre-paid into an escrow service to get the confirms. and later in the day spend at a whim throughout the day with 0 wait time. EG deposit under 1btc while taking morning shower. which will then be ready to spend at starbucks by the time you get there, saving you waiting.... But storing your life savings of bitcoin, definitely don't trust it in a third person.

if you want to see the risks of the 'bank' model where even the owner revealing their name and address.. simply research Trendon Shavers AKA Pirate@40.

if you are not a licenced, regulated service then do not expect anyone to trust you as a bank.

Yeah, I would have a hard time trusting banks with the money. You never know what will happen to them. Even with FDIC, people are wary of depositing more than the insured USD into accounts because any bank can crash at any time. It means people will definitely not trust a bank that isn't insured.
9439  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Safe Wallet on: May 23, 2013, 03:50:33 PM
I'm a bit lost. If you use paper wallets how do you get your payments updated for your records?

I'm not sure that I understand what you are trying to ask here.

And if you use the paper wallet, do you just create a new one after you make your transfer (and get the new address for your remaining coins)?

That is the recommended method.  If you know what you are doing and you are careful about it, it is possible to just send the remaining balance back to the same paper wallet that you just spent them from, but it is generally safer to create a new paper wallet and send the remaining balance to the new paper wallet address.

Typically paper wallets are used for long term storage of large amounts of bitcoin that you won't be needing regular access to, so this shouldn't be a daily problem.

Thanks for the reply. And what I was asking at the top is... when I run my client I can see what my balance is. The paper wallet wouldn't have the same benefit. But thinking about it more, you could just put the address into an explorer and see what its current balance is, right?

You could write the balance on the paper, and update it anytime you send bitcoins to it.  If you are using Armory or https://blockchain.info/wallet then you can add the paper wallet address to the wallet as a "watching only" address.

Ohh, that is awesome. Didn't realize there were "watch only" ones. I like that.

Thanks again for the help understanding. Still a newbie, :p
