961  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: generate 2 bitcoins per month? on: May 09, 2016, 01:41:03 PM
I would avoid all cloud based solutions simply because it's pretty much gambling on trusting somebody else to keep a long term contract.

At this point in time this close to halving I would just buy the coins every month until the difficulty adjusts or new miners come out.

Hashnest is only one I would send them to at this point.  They will not cut/run.   But I do like owning gear so buying and having hosted might be a possible option.  Also I would remind make sure to include costs/fees when calculating ROI.

You will need a certain amount of startup cash to even attempt this though.

Thanks for your reply!

My miner stands in the office and i am now home due to holidays.

I will immediatly try to reset or post some screenshots from the miner status site!

Pls come back around tuesday/wednesday to this thread!

Will do and not a problem!  On S4's I found sometimes they just needed a physical power off/on in certain situations.  So wishing you the best and that is all it needs.

Let us know how it turns out!
963  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Antminer S7 burnt probably on: May 08, 2016, 01:54:36 PM
I'd put my money on the PSU being dead, and the miner is fine.
It has 3 hashing boards right? I only have two PSUs (used with antminer s3) with 2 pcie each, if I connect 4 of them will it start?(3 to one hashing board and 4th near the front?) I'm scared about damaging it further.
Thanks for the help

Are you saying you have a total of 4 PCIe cables?   If I am seeing that right no do not connect 1 to each board.  I would only do it proper with 3 PCIe per board and one on controller.  And don't mix PSU's on one blade.

PSU you can test with a PSU tester, might be worth getting if you are going to be staying in mining.    With it you could test to make sure it's PSU is dead.   But please explain more of your plan it scares me reading if it truly is talking about 4 PCIe cables total.
Right. Those are the only working PSUs I have with me right now and they're from antminer s3.
And no, I entered mining late and met with so many misfortunes. I'm regretting my decision lately.
Update: I tested the APW-3 PSUs with the s3+ and I can confirm that the PSUs are dead.
Any way to know that the miner is fine? I really wanna see the green led glowing.

First off DO NOT use your S3 PSU's and try to run a S7 with 4 PCIe cables.  Just don't even go that direction or bad things will happen.  So that is the danger do not do.

It sounds like you have already figured out PSU most likely with trying S3's with it.  The way to confirm your S7 is using another compatable PSU.   Most likely you are going to go with another APW-3.    Did you get the PSU direct from bitmain?  If so depending on purchase date might hit them up and see on RMA/Warranty.  But you will need to talk to them as I have no idea what it takes on PSU I have always had good luck with theirs.

Hi community,
After nearly 3 month of stable work with my S4, i have now a problem.

There was a fallout of electricity on saturday in Moscow region and after that my S4 started again but is running only on 1400Ghs...anyone know, what do ihave to check what's up with my S4?

How can i get em to full hashing rate ?

Look forward to have your help. Nice if there is somebody from Moscow out there...

Do you have a picture of the status screen by chance?   Sometimes we can tell a little from it depending on what it says.  And I now that is going to sound stupid but have you tried turning off/on with the switch on PSU?   Turning off/on can sometimes fix slow speed (depends on what the issue is).

966  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Antminer s3 bricked with reset button on: May 08, 2016, 12:25:38 PM
Well, I tried connecting to it with putty and a usb-ttl adapter. I got some data, but after initialization competed text, it started to burn. I melted my adapter.

It melted your serial to usb adapter?  I would make sure to check points as that is something I just have not seen on here.   But if it is just the controller you still could contact bitmain support and send it in and have them take a look at it.

But do you have pictures?  If your able to take a picture of what burnt and where it was wired.

sorry if its been said or not, i couldn't see..

since its openwrt.. can this be ran off a R1?

I don't see it happening personally. You might be able to do if someone worked on it.   But with prices of RPI's and how they are so easy to get at this point, I don't see anyone working on getting it on R1.

So I would put in possible, but likely will not happen.   They focus on RPI and RPI 2.    Has anyone tried on a RPI 3?

i was thinking about picking one up tomorrow but i dont have a rpi.. i could get one but i have a R1 and a small laptop..

are they just usb devices?  i am not sure how they show up on usb.

i found a git hub with cgminer for a6, it should compile in linux?

You can actually just image a SD card nothing needs to be compiled.     Look at part 3 on first page on install it's pretty simple.   You will like the RPI controller I am thinking.

But that image is the one BlockC was shipping out on kit's.  There are other Options out there but that is one I have always used.

*Adding to that the image on first page is also on DHCP so very easy to install on all networks you can go in and set a static IP very easy after connecting.

969  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: BEST COMPUTERS FOR BTC MINING on: May 08, 2016, 07:05:04 AM
Absolutely no computer of any size shape cost or form can produce bitcoin in any meaningful capacity whatsoever any more. Even the most powerful supercomputer is useless. You need dedicated ASIC bitcoin mining hardware to mine bitcoins. The computers don't do the mining, they just run the mining hardware.
What are some of the best hardwares available in the market at the moment?

Current gen most popular would be the S7.   And there is a A6 coming in as second on sales I would say.   Research those when looking at hardware, but I suggest browsing the hardware forum.  It will show many great threads about Bitcoin Asics.

I suggest researching Asics, Basic (current) Mining Info, and Return on Income.
970  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: BEST COMPUTERS FOR BTC MINING on: May 08, 2016, 05:16:33 AM
CPU-GPU mining ended years ago. You are late like 5 years. Now there are ASICS, which are specialized just for btc mining and they cost a fortune, which will cost dust when its newer version come up. Smiley

GPU mining of BTC ended years ago, but GPU mining suprised me and is making a small comeback.  Hard to say long term but check out ether... i did not think any coin would make GPU's profitable possibly but it proved me wrong.

But that would fall into the alt-coin area for sure.  No BTC mining.
971  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: [Feburary 2016] Bitcoin Mining Datacenters by the Megawatt on: May 08, 2016, 02:43:47 AM
Wow this is awesome! Quality technology. Incredible. I know I dream but will be nice to get a liquid cooling system from Bitfury.  Grin

Truly amazing thanks for sharing.  Dang the scale of it is pretty impressive you watch that building being built... it shows what a mega mining center is for sure.   I wish they would have told timeline though.  Like day 1.. and how long that took to do so much work.

Very cool video though.
972  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Give bitcoins as a gift to someone that haven't got bitcoin wallet on: May 08, 2016, 12:47:30 AM
That's nice gift but due to high prices for most physical bitcoins I would advise on buying some satori coins which is the cheapest one out there and has nice bitcoin symbol in a nicely made texture too but the problem is how his going to use it because neither him or you have used it in the past so better learn a little bit of how bitcoin works so you could teach your friend as well. Another option would be buying t-shirts that have bitcoin symbols as well and it might be more useful to him because he could simply wear it without any further knowledge.

A physical coin would not be right for every gift you are right.  But some actually go up in value depending on which one you pick.   But it is possible to have a nice token and it go up over time.   I doubt we will see any have the jump like some of the originals but still possible.

But with OP mentioning needing it soon a paper wallet is best idea.   Coin takes some planning ahead.   OP just make sure to read on creating a secure paper wallet, and do it at home on home printer.  Also look at clearing printer cache and don't store it digitally on computer is my advice.

my ghetto garage heater  (used to be a antminer s7, but that shit was too loud/too much heat)
Looks really good. Can you share the model of the GPU's and motherboard?
Thank you

I think you missed a entire post.  l already asked this question and he did a great write up.   Look up a few posts (2 to be exact).

Or just click: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=7216.msg14756803#msg14756803 but all info asked in is that post it was very good.
974  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Email from Avalon on: May 08, 2016, 12:37:41 AM
So you wouldn't consider the slick rackmountability, total adjustability, integrated server PSUs, spiffy UI and everything else Spondoolies did (and charged a premium for, then sold truckloads of) that Bitmain doesn't to be "frills"? Please, define "frills".

$/GH/s and W/GH/s matters to Bitcoin Miners. The fact that Bitmain is thriving and Spondoolies-tech died is confirmation.
Spondoolies-tech died because of mismanagement, not because their miners were to costly.  Selling the company to BTCS is and will be their demise.

Well it was part in cost, as they tried to compete with bitmain and claim they sold them at a loss.  Which obviously does not work good.    I think it is true they just could not compete.

Now you could argue management to.  But price was a factor for sure to.

The positive side is look at coinbase, we broke through 450 again and looks good right now.  Were at 461ish on coinbase.  So very positive on value rising currently.  We will see if it lasts but it could be a good difficulty period as far as value if we can keep gains.  Early to say if it will happen.

Bitwisdom went down a little not a ton but a little:

976  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: What to do whit an old Antminer S3 on: May 08, 2016, 12:28:56 AM
Here in Montreal Canada you are able to get a S3+ for 20$ an S5 for 80$ without the power supply, to run 24/7 cost 0.60 cents a day.

To run them solo is not worth it, sell it ...... maybe as a door stop since summer is around the corner. They are great space heater in the winter,
I actually saved money this years heating my basement.

Now there is a lot of alt coin out there and I was successful whit Peercoin until it fork lately and not all the nodes updates, I tried Emercoin
and got a lot of orphan blocks, those coin are made for POS not POW.

Here is my ideas, pretty sure there is a genius out there that would take one of the coins that did not start of tank and make that coin
a slow ASIC POW coin, let say that you can't mine that coin whit more then 1.5 T or you get kick out the network or temporarily ban.

The coin reward would increase whit the difficulty not the other way like all the actual coin. By doing this people will bring back they old ASIC
to work and maybe create a new rush like Bitcoin did when it got popular.

The value of that coin should be low but high enough so people would like to mine it and enjoy making a block and the reward.

So I am trowing the ball out there, hope that somebody catch it and swing it back.

I'm not sure how you are suppose to control the 1.5T cap you gave as an example.
People can just "fake" they are a different person by spreading their hashrate.

It's a good idea if you find a way to avoid that.

That is an easy one.... there is what we call an IP address

There are SO many different way's to try to get around if IP address is used to separate different people.  I mean VPN's, Proxy's, heck whole there is a whole industry working to do this.   A good example is some places like China block this very site.... does it stop us from seeing people from China.... anwser is no they got around the blocks.

As long as there is profit to "game" the system, people will try to do it.  IP is in no way the final anwser to protect something.
977  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Is it worth it to invest in Antminer S7? on: May 08, 2016, 12:24:15 AM
The antminer is 4.73TH/s. My electricity is 0.065$ KW/h. The calculators say that I would need 220-250 days to break even. So my question is - Is it really worth it to invest in Antminer S7?

some really negative answers were given.

I say if you can handle the noise they make . if you have a plan for the heat.  if you have the power supply in hand  go for it.

I assume one unit which is 533   I will send you a free coupon  for 100 usd if you buy from the builder bitmaintech.

so 533- 100 = 433 + 55 to ship to usa   488 is your cost.

My guess is you can lose 250 usd at worst with it.

No one can tell you the up side.   Although  I think you could make 300  profit tops.

Now add in a  price for a psu and I say no since you will be at 650 up front  and very unlikely to clear more then 100 at best.

I'm happy to see someone bring some positive side to this thread.   Many threads it seems have taken a negative light.  But there is positives to to mining I can say personally I have loved it as a hobby for many years.   It has treated me well overall, and I will continue to mine.

Another good thing is PSU's can be used for multiple generations so once you ROI on it... they are great to have.   Also a quality PSU today is still a quality PSU in a year (and longer).  I know I pulled a few of my old PSU's for dabbling in ether a little.  So by buying them once... they have really paid off over and over with being good quality PSU's that I can use in many mining projects or miners.
And of course people forget the original purpose of computer power supplies- THEY. ARE. FOR. COMPUTERS! With an eth rig, simply swap the low end cpu for a 4th Gen i7 or the best Amd you can get and sell it. You'll be surprised how much people will be willing to pay for this stuff. Yep, people are too negative about mining  these days, and sooner or later the prices for mining will be too high and bitcoin mining will go rip for us, but there is always a chance btc price will jump enough for S7s to make a small profit or at least roi.

It seem fair to be negative when there's much better options out there.

It might be fair but is good to see some positive info sometimes, and there are many mining have treated good by mining.  It's getting harder and harder to make a profit I will agree and is highly tied to electricity price.

But there is some good (hopefully) for miners.  We honestly don't know what it will be like around having.   It's all speculation and hard to speculate that far.  So it's hard to say where it will all land.
978  Other / Meta / Re: Wild influx of new accounts on: May 07, 2016, 11:39:54 AM
The halving is getting close so it's likely to get worse before it gets better. There are paid shills & simply people who want the price to stay down so they can buy cheap bitcoin's before the price begins to rise.

Just ignore them, any newbie account that has a lot of bitcoin knowledge or is overly negative/trolling is obviously somebody with an agenda.

I''m not sure it really ties to people trying to keep Bitcoin price down.    I think this is talking more with accounts due to farmers like I mentioned in another thread: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1463318.msg14774356#msg14774356 .  But account farmers I think have goal of money through sig campaign or/and sales.  I think this is majority we see.

I'm sure your right some have to do with pushing BTC down.  But I think it's small subset of these "nuisance" accounts for lack of better term.
979  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Bitcoin doubts for an average person on: May 07, 2016, 11:34:17 AM
I think the basic doubts for an average person would be how to use bitcoin or how to start earning money from it and how to spend it these are basic doubts that will come to every individual's mind.

You would be surprised it's moving more and more out there.  To loose some of the "bad" things that BTC can be used to do a lot refer to it when inesting as blockchain technology or something like that.

But my family always knew I mined BTC kinda hard to hide when I started in house before having mining area.  But now some members ask more and more about it.   I think we have gained ground from my personal experience.

We are not at mass adoption, and some will always want fiat.  but I think we actually have a promising outlook as far as bitcoin spreading currently.
980  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How earn 1BTC a year? on: May 07, 2016, 11:28:23 AM
Create an account and participate in signature campaigns.

The signature campaign is best way to get bitcoins, if you have high rank member, but if you have an account rank newbie not good to joined in the signature campaign.

Signature campaign's are a great side income.  I use the forums as I would normally and I get paid for something I would do normally.  But it is not my main income.  People should not use it as main source of income.

My "crypto" main income would be mining, but that does not work for everyone.  So find  your niche some online or even a real life job and buy coins, it's honestly hard to beat that in most cases.  Buying 1 BTC a year for a lot of people out there if you save a tad from real job will happen eventually.  For most I would guess much much sooner then a year by buying.

Yeah and I think buying is the last option left but it doesn't gives you feeling of satisfaction, but if you have earned it while working hard then that feeling is different.

For me nothing will ever compare to the feeling of mining. Even earning it other way's mining is my "favorite" for lack of better term way to earn.  I just enjoy it and is a great hobby.

But for many many users just buying one might be quickest and pretty good for a log people working jobs out there.  I do realize it will not work everywhere some places 450+ might be a huge sum of money... so could really depend on region/local economy.
