1  Economy / Exchanges / Re: MtGox withdrawal delays [Gathering] on: January 24, 2014, 06:35:54 AM
Verified account at gox.  Currently waiting over 74 hours for my bitcoin withdraw to confirm in blockchain.

Is that normal, for it to take that long?

Well normal enough for someone to make this site:  http://skanner.net/MtGox/mtgox_tx.php

Not sure what the percentages on bad withdraws are but there seems to be a lot at any given time.

I split my withdraw into three parts as I was aware of the issues.  2/3 withdraws went smoothly, under an hour.  But now waiting over 3 days for one withdraw.  And no response of course from their "support" team.

A lot? I see 183 (out of who knows how many total transactions). Many of these are over 100 bitcoins. I'm not sure how much you were sending, or what the fiat output is supposed to be, but you must be loaded, to need to send three different transactions. Otherwise you likely only made your situation worse by increasing the chances for something to go wrong...

I hope you get your money. Next time pay a larger fee, $3 is nothing when sending half a million USD....

Gox implements an automatic 0.001 btc fee which is fine for my withdraw amounts.  And by splitting them up I saved myself from a major headache as it was my first transaction that didn't go through and I needed fiat money this week.  I wasn't looking for advice, just stating my situation for others.  Plus gox has had thousands of bad transactions on their part mostly due to a bug in their system.  I consider that a lot even though it may be a small percentage of total.  Frustrating for anyone in a similar situation.

I can't wait to see The Life of Oharu sometime this week. It's one of Kenji Mizoguchi's masterpieces. I've been looking forward to it for months. It stars Kinuyo Tanaka. She gave great performances in:

Equinox Flower
The Ballad of Narayama
Ugetsu
Sansho the Bailiff

I also want to see her in:

Ornamental Hairpin
Red Beard

Well thanks to you too.  Nice to hear back as you are very nice and intelligent.  You made me smile... it is nice to know there's a few respectful and thoughtful people floating around on here!  Your movie selections were very unique to me.  I'll have to look into them  Cheesy

Grand Torino.  Best I've recently seen.  I'm a big Clint Eastwood fan and this movie hit home for me.  It made me reflect on my relationship with my parents and how I never want to become someone who takes those we love for granted.  The ending when they go through his will was probably my favorite ending of any movie.  Kind of leaves a lump in ones throat.  So many of us think the world owes us something... not sure why... seems to be a generational thing though.  It's like the silver spoon of living in a first world country has messed with our moral compass in some way.  I know I'm being stereotypical and painting everyone with the same brush but that's just how I view, in general, most of society... I know there are many many great people out there but we all need to put ourselves in check sometimes.
7  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: PrimeCoin on: July 10, 2013, 10:02:03 AM
It is 'literally' more clutter. It's done by the same person who does PPCoin and it's explicitly stated that PrimeCoin is to aid PPCoin...what's the point of this currency if it isn't there to compete in the market?

Well one purpose Sunny had in mind is to create a coin with value to the scientific community.  I.e. the work that goes into mining can also be used to further mathematical research.  Personally I really enjoy developers who publish white papers along with their coins.  I guess that's just the academic side to me (math major).  I find it surprising the amount of people who claim to know so much about this coin or that coin have never read Satoshi's first paper or any of the other one's the have followed since.  Sunny King is smart, perhaps brilliant, and I believe him to be one of the most innovative developer out there right now.  Just my opinion...
8  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Namecoin the real winner? (MT Gox) on: July 10, 2013, 09:52:03 AM
I'm guessing no as well.  By looking at the featured requests on the gox support site it shows only ltc as being planned as of July 10, 2013.

On a side note, it seems many users in merged-mining pools exchange nmc for btc to increase their btc profits.  Seeing these periodic "dumps" has made me quite bearish on this coin.  Although I love the innovation and potential uses of nmc personally I am not invested heavily in them expecting great returns.  Within the last three months the price of nmc has dropped to ~0.004 nmc/btc several times with one drop even going as low as 0.00221.  I know it has also soared high in value but it seems like a sandbox which some people just like to play around in with pump and dumps schemes.  Hopefully more applications and development can bring this coin to the forefront in the upcoming future.

14  Other / Beginners & Help / Crypocurrency at the acedemic levels on: May 30, 2013, 07:03:58 AM
Any computer scientists in the house??  Have a few questions if you do not mind.

I'm wondering about the level of study/effort/interest currently going on at the academic levels into cryptocurrencies.  Is this a common area of study?  Taught at undergrad or graduate level?  Do most computer scientists have a background in this?

From going over Satoshi's first paper it appears that some of the main ideas in the references stemmed from around the year 1998.  So has this been a hot topic or small niche in universities for the past 15 years and will it continue to grow?  I studied a bit of cryptology in math many years ago now and I find it fascinating what these bright computer people have done with the theories and how they have applied in to finances.

Oh, and last question... It seems clear that bitcoin was designed to solve a direct problem... ie lowering costs of certain transactions by getting rid of human moderators.  What are some of the other fundamental problems yet to be solved that are distinctly different?

Thanks in advance to any of you that reply  Cheesy
15  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Canadians: What would you like to see from an exchange? on: May 01, 2013, 01:33:58 PM
I've used the Canadian exchange Cavirtex for about 2 years now.  I don't mind having a site with higher fees as it keeps the serious day traders away.  One thing I would like to see on about trade exchange sites is a progressive way to combat price manipulations.  I see people using big-money market manipulation tricks all the time... price squeezing, artificial floors/ceilings etc.  Bugs me.

In Canada there is something called Mintchip.  Started in 09 with the idea of a platform for digital transactions.  There is ongoing contests asking the public to provide ideas, apps, etc.  rewarding those who participate with gold bullions.
