1  Bitcoin / Group buys / Re: [Group Buy#1] Avalon ASICs CHIPS! Using JohnK as escrow! FINISHED! on: September 11, 2013, 04:40:45 PM
Filled out the form.  I haven't read all the back posts, but shame it came down to this.

If anyone else is looking to get rid of some chips, I'm already in this group buy for 13, and would love to get another 30 or so.

Shame this one stalled, I had 5 or so BTC I was trying to get setup to boost my measly 13 chips I ordered from the first group buy. Not nearly enough to make a difference...

Hopefully another local one crops up to hop into.

Everyone is welcome. Except scary people. Wink

I'll make sure to put on a nice guy smiley face then!  Cheesy

ragingazn628, I got into the end of the last group buy (with admittedly a low amount,) could I still get in on this one or are you excluding previous people?  I don't know how many exactly yet, it depends on what the going rate of BTC is when Dwolla finishes its transfer.

GPU mining can recover a large part of the initial spend on craigslist/eBay if things really do go belly up.  People spending money on ASICs will have nothing more than museum pieces.

Even better though is the ability to vent your frustration in glorious 4k resolution on some unsuspecting bad guys in whatever free games come with all those 7xxx cards!

Does anyone know what it would take for a newbie to get into the Avalon group buy?  It seems like after one post I can PM the guy in charge.

Relatively new to this whole bitcoin world, but enjoy playing with new technology.
PS: I'm the escrow in charge for that. We're in the last legs of the group buy, so do it fast if you want a part of it.  Wink
Someone is buying up the rest once he gets the coins today.

Hey John, thanks for posting here (I've been trying to post in your thread.)

I would like to get 13 of the chips, which should come out to right around 1.1 (I have just a hair more than that from mining)

Do I just send the BTC to you and I get added to the list, or do I need to do anything else?

My advice is always hesitate to trust people on the forums here.

Would you know what to do with the chips if you got them?  I think a lot of people are buying and won't really know what to do.

Valid, and yes, I'm an electrical engineer.  I want the chips to play with them more than actually try to make money.  It's a novel application and it's always fun to sharpen skills.  For what my gaming computer made up in BTC in a couple of weeks I'm more than happy to give up to play with new toys.

Thanks for the concern and heads up, I'll certainly be wary.

My 2 7870s seem to be a hair hotter, but still maintaining about 800 MH/s together.  It also seems like dynamic intensity is more prone to drop to a lower hashrate with 13.4 over 13.3.  No changes observed at all on the 2 6870s, but they are watercooled and in an unused computer.

You sound hesitant about the whole thing.

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=177994.0 was the buy in particular I was thinking about joining.

It seems like ASICs in general are kind of a gamble.  Either way, I'm not going to throw enough money at this to screw me over if something does go wrong.

Thanks for your reply, up to two posts!
