You are claiming that the creator of the original transaction is incompetent and that he somehow made the mistake in the process that you can exploit. Do not even want to comment on that. He did not need to create any "software", if you read this thread you should know that he used of the shelf deterministic wallet (https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Deterministic_wallet) to generate the keys, and simply XOR them with masks for the needed length of the keys. There is 0% chance this process can be mixed up.

It's random. Random means no patterns. Any range, tiny or big one, has exactly the same probabilty to hold the key as any other range of it's size. Simple as that.

Backing up wallet.dat that is encrypted with decent passphrase is not a big issue, attacker first has to hack you to access your backup, and then has to attack the file's encryption passhprase. This is so complicated attack vector that all attackers rather choose to attack idiotic brainwallets.

Can not be sure, but the word on the strret is that Terra scammers lost from 18k BTC to 25k BTC trying to defend their scamcion's peg to BTC before they gave up. Citadel of course got the profits from shorting, but whoever wants to again create simmilar shitcoin in the future will probabbly think twice before doing that.

The fact that a lot of BTC are now out of hands of these shitcoin manipulators is the only conforting thing from this crisis.

It's a good thing that you have end of WIF format data where the checksum is. You have to first Base58 decode the string (with corrupted part, or you can replace the corrupted part with zeros). Since you are doing it only once you can use this online tool:
https://www.browserling.com/tools/base58-decode

Once you have decoded number you can use the checksum to quickly check the possible missing values, if the checksum does not match you do not need the other calculations to get public key and check against it.
This is enormous speed-up, this is doable even on CPU, no need for GPU.

I doubt that you have some ready made tool for this second step, have to do some work yourself to code checking the missing values against the checksum. Good luck!

Just tried it with some test values, you have to do Base58 Decode for all possible versions of missing values, not only once, string before corrupted characters stays the same but Base58 Encode changes all values after the corrupted place.

However, this is still much, much faster then generating Public key, doable on CPU for sure.
