First off, this ICO model is beautiful in terms of the fundraiser's perspective.
It "bets" or hedges against the future value of eth and btc (and allows us the buyer to do the same) at the time of the ico by saying it will buyback at $X over a period of time, effectively keeping the price down/steady while the eth and btc they collect (and supposing some are saved for future use) they would've made more than enough to buy back at the most expensive buyback price.
Second, all the talk of crypto having no intrinsic value has reminded me of zrcoin which is effectively backed by zirconium oxide which is unique and has the potential to be replicated, in a sense. Either ways, I'd very much like to exchange it for a kg of ZrO2 (did I get that right?) or at least shares when and if the company goes public as per their whitepaper.

we don't need to think that all ICOs are scams... There are many really good teams now who are trying to launch a new coin but they are also trying to make a wide and strong community and have some really demanding technologies behind this.
Not all icos are scam but a good number are, they make promises about a project and people give to them millions of dollars and then after some time they just disappear with all the money they got from their investors and after sometime they come back to the forum to try to scam members once again. they dont need disappear. they just say project fail and sorry, very sorry. that's all. so check team profile is very important. What about market size and trends? |

I think if the team is solid, the product is something I can see and it is obviously more than just an idea, then it is worth seriously considering.
True, team is a solid factor, although in this case you won't be able to meet them physically. Market size is just as important. |

I think ICOs have given retail investors the chance to stand in a friends/family/angel/VC's shoes; able to invest in pre-idea/idea/product stage of a start up. I strongly urge all of you participating in an ICO to think like an angel/VC, the startup may be a good idea, may already have a product, but is the market or traction substantial enough to warrant an investment from you?

Just as cryptos have a future, altcoins do too. What is important is the coin's use and practicality. Be wary of scams.

I have noticed an emerging trend where at least 90% of new cryptocurrencies at one point in their first month of release to exchanges will fall way below their ico price so why don't I just wait for that point and buy instead of buying during an ico?

It will take out the gambling from the ICO process which is a good thing. Assuming that an acc. investor at least works through the whitepaper of a coin and understands the basics of investing, risk management and the underlying technology he is investing in.

Newbie here, but would like to know the opinion of other experienced users/anyone with an opinion (everyone) here  . With the recent bans, and news of crypto tightening regulations, some coins (mostly those which are modeled as a security) are beginning to move more into an accredited investor/institutional investor-only ICO. Do you guys see it as ICOs/blockchain defeating its own purpose by being open only to individuals with the big bucks, a needed measure, or there is way for us to agree on a middle ground? What country is regulating? I haven't really noticed anything but if the ICO scene does move a to acredited investors then I will probably look for a different coin alternative to the alternatives, I'm not gonna buy stocks from people with 10 million-100million or a billion dollars. Then the whole market can go F**** itself it will be a wall street game. Ok granted, governments have mentioned they will regulate, no regulation has been done, except for China's ban. Singapore, South Korea, just to name a few. But do you think ICOs structured like BCAP/Science blockchain has to have an accredited investor-only offering, while there still exists room for ICOs where tokens are part of the fundraiser's system, to be open to retail investors? |

You have a point, but you should check also that these are ICOs, i think it is the same model with IPOs ,like this is what IPO/ICO 's offer, it's for you if you will invest or not, i think there are some ICOs that allows a low rate for investment. I'd say IPOs are solely for fundraising purposes, for startups looking to exit, or SMEs needing a huge some of money. In this sense an ICO is only similar to the IPO, definitely not the same. In an IPO, all the big boys get first share of the pie, followed by a select lucky few of retail investors, and once it's on the market, anyone can have their share. Do you see ICOs going into this direction? |
