Canaan is something new to me so I didn't know exactly how the controllers worked.

Questions for the group:

1) since miner is based on cgminer I should be able to monitor it with the regular cgminer api commands? Is this correct? e.g. stats command

2) the controller controls several miners? therefore, i cannot send ssh commands? so my only option to restart miner is through the api?

From the article: "The critical point is that miners need username and password to log in."

I recommend the following:
   - Do not expose your antminer to the internet. Always place it behind a firewall. In this way your miner will not be discovered by Shodan.
   - Always change the default user name and password for your miner (remember to change both web access and ssh access)
   - Monitor your mining payout address so if someone changes your pool and worker address you will notice.

Having said that, the scripts in this thread have been replaced by Full Cycle Mining (I am the author of both). I do not yet recommend any of the programming be exposed to the internet because someone could easily switch pools or reset all your miners. The best rule for security right now is to always access miners using vpn.

I am putting everything together to be released as open source.

Here it is in python. miner and login are my classes. You can use tuples or just hard code the ip, user, pwd for testing.

The basic idea is to connect to miner using ssh, run the commands and reboot the miner. Then you can hit the api and add and switch pools.

Speculating, but my crystal balls are hazy. Gotta find a fix for that.

1. Bitmain price drop. This seems to already be happening with flood of coupons
2. New BM machine with updated chips from samsung. sans asicboost? blows halong out of the water even without asicboost
3. New machine s9++ with covert asicboost for mining BTC at chinese pools or mine BCH, does not encroach upon overt BDPL patent?
4. flip a bit on all existing s9 in the field that suddenly enables asicboost that was there all along? no new machine required

My guess is Wu's lawyers are reviewing patent and options. It seems like a legal question as much as a tech question.

Seems certain that covert asicboost will have to come out to the open now.

Overt asicboost needs pool support and those are ONLY BTC pools currently.

There would be NO ADVANTAGE to using these machines on a BCH pool. Effectively these machines will be used to mine BTC exclusively. As the designers of these halong machines intended.

For 90% of miners on this board that is not a problem. For other people it could be.

Its part of the deceptive business practices that we have seen.
The initial sales pitch should have come with a disclaimer:
"Works better at some pools than others."
"16TH but your mileage may vary"

The phrase "one trick pony" comes to mind.

Yes. And No.

I have a site that tracks pool "Performance", not the same as luck but similar.
I switch hash to pools that are under performing and I expect them to "catch up".
Think "buy low, sell high" as if you are trading a stock.
I don't have any hard evidence to prove that the system works yet but I plan to audit the performance results and tweak the strategy.
For example, I switched out of slush yesterday and went into VIA. Now (or soon) will be the time to switch back into slush as luck returns.
My system helps me make decisions based on numbers and not emotion.

Here is the caveat: By the time you feel like you should switch away from a pool because it has bad luck it is already too late. When you're already experiencing a period of bad luck that is the time you should be thinking about switching more hash into the pool that is having the bad luck.

However, remember that pools like slush use score system that discourages frequent pool hopping.

An equally valid strategy is just stick with pool like slush that shares fee reward with miners and over a long period the luck will average out.

Just to make this post even longer and give you something else to think about:
The difficulty adjustment is coming up in about 2 days and often fewer blocks are found right after DA, based on my observations. That's when I switch in to pool that has PPS for a couple days so at least I'm getting regular payouts during the adjustment.

Pool switching can be stupid if you do it based on emotion but if you have some strategy behind it then it can be smart.

I have no idea if true or not but it would not shock me.

Consider:
- Bitmain recently releasing previously unannounced blake miner with shipping within 10 days
- Competition heating up in sha256 mining space so bitmain looking for new markets
- Bitmain seems to be rolling out miners for new algos in blitzkrieg fashon
- Would fit pattern of bitmain building asic chips for gpu algos
- threats from dev teams to change hashing algos or switch to Proof of Stake does not deter them

Where it ends I do not know.

Most importantly. What was the hash rate that you observed when you were "working with them remotely"?

I have to admit it does *appear* at this time that buyers will get something, maybe.

However, the last reply from @bt898 seems like its still the most probable: these are stolen inno prototypes and halong found a way to mass produce them and are even now trying to alter the controller.

Personally, I'm not going anywhere near one of these things.
I'm just not that desperate and the whole thing still stinks.

Looking at the front face is not at all conclusive of anything. Those are just front connectors that could be connected to anything or nothing.

I am building a similar utility and will incorporate some of the ideas on this thread.

I agree with use of sed command to update the conf file.

For example the following command sets up miner to privileged mode so it can be controlled through api

The general idea of something I would like to do is to
    - scan local subnet addresses to find ip addresses that respond on port 4028
    - check if the miner has already been "provisioned" with my custom settings
    - run the setup batch file if needed

I don't have all of these steps automated yet but I have a few steps ready.
