6  Economy / Speculation / Winklevoss Bitcoin ETF effect in price on: July 05, 2014, 07:42:39 PM
I have a few questions regarding the Winklevoss Bitcoin ETF and its effect on price. I keep reading that it will make skyrocket the price of bitcoin. However, I don't see how. Let me explain:

As far as I know the Winklevoss ETF consists on putting on the market shares representing the value of the bitcoins held by the twins. Let's say they have 100.000 BTC and they will create 1.000.000 shares (hypothetical numbers). I would expect that the price of each share would be calculated according to the price of BTC at the moment of the IPO. Afterwards, the price of the shares would change depending on supply/demand. How can this supply/demand of the shares affect the price of bitcoin in markets like Bitstamp/Huobi/etc? If the Bitcoins held by the brothers are not sold or they don't buy more, how can it affect the price?
The way that I understand it is that the price of the shares will be highly influenced by the value of bitcoin, but not the other way around!

Am I missing something? Otherwise, just let me know how the shares can affect the price of BTC.

Thanks in advance for clarifying my doubts!

9  Economy / Service Discussion / MtGox is lying... probably they stole all the bitcoins on: February 28, 2014, 07:29:45 PM
If I understand well, a poor protocol implementation could cause MtGox internal system to re-send more than once certain transactions due to the malleability issue.
If this happened, the bitcoins are not lost... somebody (that could be also MtGox BTW) who was "attacking" the protocol by creating the transactions with a different id is the owner of the bitcoins leaked by mtgox.

I guess that it should not be very hard to find duplicates in outgoing transactions with the same amount.

If my assumptions are right then this implies the following:

MtGox is lying when they say that the bitcoins are lost due to a flaw the bitcoin protocol. The bitcoins were stollen from the exchange due to a poor implementation.

On the other hand, it could happen that they had a faulty internal exchange software making disappear bitcoins (destroying the only copy of private keys containing bitcoins). I really cannot believe that this happened. And this will be impossible to prove. They could have stolen all the bitcoins and then say that they lost the private keys.

Too many mistakes/bugs are necessary to loose bitcoins for ever. My personal opinion is that they have stolen the bitcoins and they did shutdown the system to avoid users to recover their transaction ids. Without this is almost impossible to track all the bitcoins that went in/out from MtGox.

11  Economy / Speculation / Re: 124000 USD from bitcoins order from Overstock.com on: January 10, 2014, 11:17:37 PM
this is bearish news.

Oh man, we've made a big mistake guys. The key to success is not to let any more people find out about bitcoin and discourage it's acceptance for services. Then the 25 of us can refuse to sell any of it to each other for less than a million dollars each, and tally up our riches!

Reasons to be a bear:
1) "No one is spending bitcoin!"
2) "No major retailers accept bitcoin!"
3) "Bitcoin isn't well known enough!"
4) "Too many people are spending! Ignore reason 1. Logical contradictions are ok!"

5) "I sold all my bitcoins!"

6) Introducing some FUD here and there price will go down and I'll buy some coins cheaper...
12  Economy / Speculation / Re: I Concede on: January 03, 2014, 03:15:38 PM
I bought in at $448 on the dip a week ago.

Sold some at $630 because I thought it was topping out.

Sold more at $730 because I thought it was topping out.

I am now buying less coins than I had originally and cold storing them in safe locations and trading zero for a year.

Someone please tell me this is a good idea so I can get back to my normal life!!! I'm tired of looking at charts!
Welcome to the BTC world!  We were all there Wink
Buy and hold is a great strategy!

14  Economy / Economics / Bitcoin mass adoption on: December 03, 2013, 02:31:20 PM
How to help bitcoin consolidate as a currency?

It comes to my mind a few things but the most important ones are:
- Have some cash in one exchange (fiat). Each time we need to buy something online, try to find a place we can buy it in bitcoins. Then we just buy the right amount of bitcoins and we purchase the item. For this I would suggest to have the cash in exchanges like btc-e where the price per bitcoin is lower than mtgox/btcchina.
- Tell everyone (friends/family) to use it. Help them to create wallets and teach them how to use them.

Any more ideas? How can we help bitcion adoption?
15  Economy / Speculation / Re: today is 20/11/13 - on 22-24 Bitcoin will start rising for approx 10-20 days on: December 03, 2013, 12:17:29 PM
I am sure that if you would reveal your source and people would give it credit, they would be buying bitcoins, so price would go up. Just reveal the secret and you will get more profit than just with a 0.01-0.02 BTC for the tip. Otherwise, it's just speculation.  Wink

Some people never learn.
We're at the second bounce of the falling trend of the Elliott Wave, right after the head-and-shoulders.

Some people never learn.
Bitcoin doesn't care about charts ,ta, waves and stuff.
Say that to the clown prophet who predicted the current rally and the one before with TA  Roll Eyes

Guy 1: The price tomorrow will be <400$ because look at the chart!!
Guy 2: The price tomorrow will be between 400 because look at the chart!!
Guy 3: The price tomorrow will be between 401 because look at the chart!!
...
Guy 400:The price tomorrow will be between 800 because look at the chart!!
Guy 401:The price tomorrow will be >800 because look at the chart!!

So one thing will be true for 100%: One guy will be right and he will claim to be a prophet! Roll Eyes

17  Economy / Speculation / Re: Cashed out before the crash. on: November 18, 2013, 12:00:37 PM
If you sell your bitcoins and buy them afterward, do you need to declare it for some kind of taxes? Or just when you sell and transfer it to your bank account?
18  Economy / Speculation / Re: Great New Crash (fulfilled) on: November 10, 2013, 05:25:56 PM
I think the tendency has change and obviously it will keep going down the next days. If you are in the trade mood... sell and buy lower. Otherwise hold till the we catch again this prices in a couple of months.
19  Economy / Speculation / Re: how many BTC is enough? on: November 09, 2013, 06:52:15 PM
The most you can afford (to lose in the worst of the cases) the better... IMHO
20  Economy / Speculation / Re: Difference in exchange prices on: November 09, 2013, 05:23:13 PM
BTCChina price = fake, because 0 trading fees, selling to oneself is encouraged, easy to mass manipulate price and fake high volume

MtGox price
= fake, because USD (and EUR) can't leave there. All withdrawals take >2 months, so you currently can NOT get your money out. To get any currency out, one has to convert (BUY --> higher price) to BTC. (recent rumors have it that even BTC withdrawals are grinding to a halt). One could say that due to the inability to withdraw MtGox USD, "MtGox USD" as a currency is worth less than normal USD you can move around the globe in a day or three.

Bitstamp price (358 at moment of writing) = okay at the moment, only healthy market (along with BTC-e) currently.

BTC-e price (347 at moment of writing) two factors:

a) Currently USD/EUR at BTC-e is 1.315, actual value is 1.335. BTC-e USD's are worth more in that sense - 1.335/1.315*347 = 353. But this is only because I'm European, and will cash out in Euros.

b) LTC market is really big there. Due to switching from BTC to LTC and back, arbitrage bots will suppress the BTC-price a bit compared to other exchanges (a few dollars)

I don't see too much weird going on here.

It makes sense what you say. Thanks for the reply!
