Yes, there are power uses when earning bitcoins, especially if you're one of those miners. Mining requires high powered computers in the first place.

With the current economy, expect that the government will find ways to consider bitcoin as illegitimate. But we're still hoping that it won't.

These are called as hardware wallets. They come in the form of USBs or SSD cards. However, purchasing one may cost you more.
