1  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: I do not want blockchain data stored under Application Data folder, how to on: July 26, 2014, 03:10:51 PM
I know this is an old thread but I had to use it a couple times and wanted to share some useful info.

If you want to create a symlink to a new bitcoin data directory in Windows you have to make sure that the original directory is either deleted or renamed. I suggest the following:

Shutdown bitcoin client
rename C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Bitcoin to something else, like bitcoin_old
Then create the new directory where you want your data to be stored, example E:\bitcoinData
then you can run the mklink command. mklink /d "c:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Bitcoin" e:\BitcoinData

I had trouble with this and the command fails if the original bitcoin directory is still there. So you have to rename it.

Also, if you want to do the same for a NAS share, you have to specify the full path to the share, and not the drive letter:

mklink /d "c:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Bitcoin" \\nas-server-name\BitcoinData

2  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Too late to get rich? on: March 16, 2013, 08:03:52 PM
Forget the word rich. I just want to make a decent chunk of change by getting in early on an opportunity.  I have confidence in bitcoin as I'm sure most of us do. I just feel like I"m missing the boat all the time. People are going nuts over ASIC mining and pre-order slots for that sort of gear is already filled. Part of me wants to just buy coins but at near $50 a pop I couldn't afford to make a difference, plus there's always the risk. If they were still at $5 per BTC I'd buy as many as I could. Look at all the threads on this site. Its mind-numbing. Are there any opportunities to "buy into" some sort of ASIC powered mining operation or something?
3  Economy / Service Discussion / Too late to get rich? on: March 16, 2013, 04:40:37 PM
I was a bitcoin early adopter and lost interest in bitcoin when it went from $30 down to $5. I feel idiotic for not scooping up BTC at that price.  I did some early mining with my 5970 and accumulated ~50BTC and stopped mining when difficulty increased. I'm back now and it seems like everyone is getting rich and I can't help but feel like I'm missing out on groundfloor opportunities. I figure I'd take a shot and see if anyone could share some tips or current service offerings that could put me back in the game. ASIC miners are sold out and quite frankly there's so much info on these boards that its a full time job just reading everything. I'm pool mining right now but netting like .05BTC every few days isn't enough. Perhaps this same mentality is what screwed me up last time and I dont want to make the same mistake again.

I've been an "IT" person all my life and I have no idea how I missed out on things like buying Google or Apple. Bitcoin seems to be my last chance. Any tips would be appreciated.

5  Bitcoin / Pools / Fresh start on Deepbit? on: June 22, 2011, 02:02:59 AM
Since there are scams and hacks a-plenty these days, you would think that Deepbit's website would be overhauled to allow a little more customization with regard to user accounts. I'd like to be able to change my email address but there doesn't appear to be a way to do it.

What does the lock my bitcoin address forever mean? Who knows, there's no help on the page. The only help the site gives is info on how to set up a miner. I'd like to start fresh and create a new presence, new email, etc. Whats the best way to go about it besides joining another pool?
6  Bitcoin / Mining / Anyone else having troubles getting payments from Deepbit? on: June 21, 2011, 02:22:00 PM
Been trying to generate a payment from Deepbit and nothing's happening. Can someone else confirm?
7  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Change the password if your wallet is stored online on: June 20, 2011, 12:34:19 AM
If anyone is using dropbox or something you might want to change your password. Especially if your wallets are stored in the cloud.

Could someone write me a search engine I need something similar to Google.com please PM me
9  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Block Lifecycle (Solo vs. Pooled vs. Private pool type question) on: June 14, 2011, 01:13:56 AM
I'd like to know the answer to this as well. It seems that a bigger pool has a better chance somehow which is why deepbit is so large but I'm not making any money on Deepbit right now and was thinking of joining a diff pool - not if I'm going to make less there tho.

10  Other / Beginners & Help / Deepbit is sucking lately. on: June 14, 2011, 01:11:42 AM
Not only are many connection problems but I'm not generating as many coin as I used to. Where's everyone mining at these days? At this point, does it matter what pool I join? Its only me and my 5970.
11  Other / Beginners & Help / How many coins do you deposit into MTGOX/Tradehill? on: June 13, 2011, 02:44:22 PM
Those of you that do a lot of buying and selling, how much do you tend to keep in your wallet vs online at an exchange? Right now I have all my coins in my wallet (which isn't much) but I'm leery of dropping them all somewhere but if the prices shoot up to a good selling price, having all your coins that you are willing to sell in your wallet could slow things down alot, right? I'm just afraid that someone will walk away with all my coins. Maybe I'm being too paranoid or just missing something.
12  Other / Beginners & Help / Free way to see bitcoin info on desktop on: June 13, 2011, 02:10:56 PM
I've been searching for some free bitcoin widgets to use on my desktop and could find any that were free. Due to security reasons, I dont trust opening up my PC to an app that could be used to compromise my wallet so I found a better solution.

This program allows you to take a snippet of a website and have it displayed on your desktop. Since its the real website - only smaller - you can have things like bitcoin monitor and bitcoincharts displayed and constantly being updated without taking up all your screen real-estate. Here's a screenshot of my desktop showing the activity of bitcoin monitor and bitcoin charts price for bitcoins.

Get the app here. If this helped you out, please feel free to send a small donation. I'm poor :-)

I too would love regain access to the main forums once again. I've been a long time lurker and it took me a while to realize that the new post button was removed from the other forums :-) Thought it was my browser for a second. Anyway, I'm a peaceful miner mining coins on my main rig and would love to participate in the economics discussions in the other boards. I hate spammers and feel that locking things down a bit was the right move but we need to find a way to get the good guys back into the regular forums as I'm sure people have a lot to contribute to this community.
14  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Desktop Lag on: June 12, 2011, 12:30:17 AM
How do I do that? Isn't aggression only used with the Phoenix miner?
15  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Desktop Lag on: June 11, 2011, 11:38:43 PM
Are there any flags that will reduce desktop lag when running a miner? I have a 5970 running 24x7 but its running on the machine I use to play games on. Some games even cause the PC to bluescreen if I launch them while the miners are running. In general tho, the desktop is laggy. Is there anything I can do?
16  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: JadeBitcoinGadget - Windows Gadget for slush and deepbit on: June 11, 2011, 09:13:36 PM
How do we know that software like this doesn't grab your wallet and upload it off your PC?
17  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: If you brought at 31.00, are you kicking yourself now? Market down to 20.00 on: June 10, 2011, 09:22:35 PM
Wow, what a troll. I haven't bought any bitcoins. I let my miners generate as this is a hobby. Even if this all goes to hell, I'm still not out any money. There's even ways around electrical costs. Those that are interested can PM me for 1BTC.

18  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Question about wallet on: June 10, 2011, 09:17:45 PM
Does the wallet.dat need to be backed up after each transaction? Its not clear. I've back it up plenty of times and was just wondering if it was necessary after each new BTC received. I'm guessing yes but wanted to make sure.
19  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: DDoS on deepbit again? on: June 10, 2011, 09:02:58 PM
Both of my miners cannot connect. Where's everyone pointing to now?
20  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Nothining showing up in bitcoin client on: May 17, 2011, 01:57:05 AM
Funny, I just received them. Maybe it takes a while?  I also read something about allowing incomming connections on my router which I did after I saw that the first instant payment didn't come thru. Not sure what the problem is but it appears to be resolved.
