2  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: bad time or good time to buy asic miner on: April 08, 2022, 05:58:28 PM
Yup I got them.  they turn on and hash as expected, noise levels are what I am expecting, no drops that i have seen so far.

I think the guy thought they were "computers".  he was not sure Smiley

so a bit of an update on my situation.  I was checking facebook marketplace and I found someone selling 2 x M31S+ and  2 x Goldshell Hs5 units for $1500 each.  I am NOT joking and totally serious.  He did not know what he had.  Someone owed him money and offered these.  he took them and then tried to sell them.  I saw them and pounced.

Did I win the lottery?  First of all I cant find any of these units anywhere unless it is from ebay, etc for $8k++++

Remember I am entirely new to Asic mining (was a GOU miner for years).  These are my first units.  Did I get a deal?

Thank you.  I will take a look at that

Hello folks....

I was wondering if there was such a site where I could have "widgets" I can place on my desktop that would show coin price and diff , and I could have 4 or 5 coins on the screen at one where I could see both of those stats?  if not a widget, does anyone know of a site I could pout in the coin, and they could show me both of these values, but then allow me to put in more coins and that data gets added to the same screen so I could see it all at once?
6  Bitcoin / Mining / bad time or good time to buy asic miner on: April 01, 2022, 08:48:06 PM
Long time GPU miner, first time Asic Miner...

I moved away from mining eth, given the planned PoS move in June.  Looking to buy an Asic miner, but from what I can tell, the ROI on most miners is 24 months min.  24 months is a lifetime in crypto, as well as the 24 months does not include diff increase over those 24 months.  Am I missing something?  Can anyone give me some suggestions on models that have a decent ROI?  On one hand I can get myself an A 1246 Pro 87T, but i see some new units coming in July at 140T that will certainly raise the hashrate and increase time for ROI.

Thoughts/Guidance ?
7  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / What will you do when you cant mine Eth anymore? on: October 14, 2021, 09:34:43 PM
I know we dont know when Eth 2.0/PoS is coming, but it IS coming at some point.  Curious what my fellow miners will do when they cant mine eth anymore...  I have heard people might mine eother PoW coins like RVN, however profits will be much lower due to the hash from eth will move to rvn to a degree (and the rest of the PoW coins).  you could go ASIC SHA-256 route and taker a crack at BTC, but good luck trying to get your hands on a miner.  There are some new projects like Chia and Helium which look interesting that have a different take on mining.

Perhaps you might take your eth you have and stake it, and if you have less than 32 eth, perhaps you will join a staking pool.

I for one, have not decided other than I know I would like to continue in some capacity with mining.

Thoughts?
8  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / London Release and miner software on: July 21, 2021, 02:16:41 PM
Hello!

As miners, once the London fork comes out, is there a need to update our miner clients (ie. PhoenixMiner)?

Good point.  thank you for your thoughts.  Appreciate it
10  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Can more hashrate translate into lower price of coin? on: July 13, 2021, 09:35:08 PM
Been wondering this for a while now and wanted to hear what others thought.  Lets take RVN.  Right now, majority of alt miners are mining eth, and when eth goes to POS, they will either retire or switch to a new coin.  eth has MASSIVE hash power, and if I am a simple HODLer of RVN and I bought it at say 5 cents, I assume there will be many miners who would sell RVN they mine immediately to cover their power bills or use the money to buy other coins (btc, eth, ada, etc).

So what does this mean?  so if my theory holds true, all the POW coins today that people have bought and are simply HODLing, when the massive hash power of the eth miners comes knocking and they begin to miner all those other POW coins, those who bought prior to the hashpower, might see a dip in the coin price as a result?

Thoughts?  What do people think?

PS.  I guess if there is some truth to my theory, when eth goes to POS and eth miners are no longer selling eth for power costs or buying other coins, I wonder if that would have an opposite effect reducing the number of eth sellers because us miners are no longer selling it for power costs, etc
11  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Gas fees already very low, so I think 1559 wont be too bad now on: June 21, 2021, 08:55:41 PM
All of us mining ETH has seen a major drop in payouts over the past several weeks.  With Gas prices soooo low, when 1559 gets implemented, will it be as painful as it woulf have been say just a few months ago?  I feels like it wont be too bad now.  The pain (low has prices) have already occured so is it now really a big deal?  Dont get me wrong, I am not saying I am happy with the current eth mining payouts, rather saying I think we are already (or nearly) there in terms of how 1559 can and will impact miners?
12  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Nvidia CMP cards on: June 09, 2021, 03:26:05 PM
I would suggest you stick with GPUs if you want some sense of resale value.  Mining will end in 2021 with ETH moving to POS period.  I say this with a heavy heart as I am a "long" time eth miner since 2017 and dont want eth mining to end but it will.  at least once eth does end mining, I can sell all my 5600xt cards for 400-500 easy to gamers.  CMP will be a boat anchor I suspect by that time.

awesome..  thanks folks!
14  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Eth 2 staking question on: June 04, 2021, 11:16:18 PM
If I stay my eth with someone today and lets say the price of eth today is $2,706 for one year, I get an expected return.  My question is lets say 3 months into me staking my eth @ $2,706, the price climbs to $6,000, does my expected return also increase even though I am only 3 months into a month 12 stake?
15  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Next phase for Ethereum Miner on: May 17, 2021, 07:03:18 PM
I have been mining Eth since Sept 2017, and I have heard my share of GPU mining is dead POS is around the corner.  But I can honestly say that with 1559 this summer (July I believe) and the recent announcement that the diff bomb will be delayed until Dec 2021, we are looking at the dead of ETH GPU mining by the end of the year.

And I have been reading the same news as everyone else that there is no minable coin we can switch our GPUs post post ETH POW that has the market cap to make GPU mining profitable.

So I plan on selling all my GPUs probably in the fall (while GPU prices remain very high) and would like to move to something different.

Question is what does that "new normal" look like.  It would seem to me the only real options if I want to stick with mining is BTC or XMR.  For XMR, I dont know of any profitable approach that gives a reasonable ROI, and for BTC its hard to get into with the high prices of ASICs for a hobby/home miner.

what are other ETH miners  thinking around their plans?

I dont see eip1559 included in Berlin upgrade

17  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Exodus Wallet Question on: March 17, 2021, 02:04:50 AM
For long-term storage, it's best to use full node wallets. For bitcoin, this is Bitcoin core, for ripple, find an official wallet too.
With this approach, your coins will be 100% safe.
Only it is probably worth using a separate computer for these purposes.

Thank you everyone....

Say for eth, what full node wallet is there.  I tried searching for the "native" full node client but was not too lucky.  Any chance you can point me in the right direction?

19  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Exodus Wallet Question on: March 15, 2021, 05:38:44 PM
If I end up using Exodus wallet to manage BTC and XRP, but one day, Exodus decides to get out of the business and shutdown, will their wallet still work?  From what I can tell their wallet seems to be a hybrid personal wallet but requires you to be online to function.  Is the need to function driven due to the need to sync with the blockchain and if yes, does it sync with nodes on the network or does it need to sync with its master node that it manages that could become offline if it goes out of business.
20  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Will history repeat itself? (4GB GPU) on: January 22, 2021, 12:21:02 AM
I was in the same boat as you with my 4gb cards.  I sold some, and have two left.  mining etc for now.  You wont get rich off etc (making like 50 cents per card)  but   it still is profitable after electric (for now)
