Others have made a full node w rasp pi, you need a large memory cart. Also the read/ write speed can be an issue from what i read but i never did it myself
3  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Building headless Bitcoin and Bitcoin-qt on Windows on: May 18, 2015, 08:25:05 AM
Someone else may be able to say this better.

The tools cannot just be copied on your computer if built on another.

You would still have to add the path to your environment variables and some will just not work at all.

It is true that sometimes if one file is missing or corrupt it can be copied from another persons build but for copying the whole thing I can't imagine it would work.

For those people, there is the precompiled bitcoin.
This is not the same. I was talking about downloading the build environment and then compiling rather than compiling every library yourself.
The amount of potential errors is outstanding.

9  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] [QRK] Quark | Super secure hashing | CPU mining on: August 14, 2013, 10:51:26 PM
I got this link from the Sif coin thread (english not russian one) it is the source code that when compiled will mine Sif better than the standard client with MinerD.   Since Quark is based on (but not a copy of) Sif maybe someone with more skills than me can get this running quark.

Not sure if having 3 random generated on top of the six other styles makes it impossible or if MinerD will really do better than the default client which I noticed now shows hash rate since updated.

Note on Sif thread this was posted as an alpha but it does work on that coin.

10  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [ANN] Philosopherstone - PHS | No Premine | Mandatory update 1.2 before Aug 9. on: August 12, 2013, 02:54:21 AM
To the developers,

Mega NZ is a site I and others refuse to download from. (This can't be the first time you heard about them)

Your 'mandatory update' skydrive link is dead.

The link on google docs is good and I tried it but it 'sticks' at 6084 in the blockchain.

When I get round to it I suppose I can compile but I suggest you try to correct these items since many others will not bother.

There is no shortage of coins to mine.

If you are trying to attract support making it a 'turn key' operation is best.

Personally I am moving on.
11  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [ANN] Neocoin final will be launched on Saturday, 10th at 8.00 p.m. (GMT + 0:00) on: August 11, 2013, 11:10:35 AM
I think your question was not answered because there is no valid answer  --- if this was an honest , 100% disclosed operation.

Not making the source available ahead of time and all these strange delays probably mean that whatever stunt was planned either a pre mining of coins or other trickery to allow a few people to grab up a handful did not go as planned.

Regardless it is what it is.

I think this had one 'launch' and that was stopped.

The members of the forum here are not generally a warm and fuzzy bunch about "second chances" and people not
knowing what time zone they are in or keeping the community updated if problems do come up.

So there it is. Another day , another coin.  Let's see what happens a few weeks or months down the road.

Due problems with our dedicated server, Neocoin can't be released for Security Reasons...

Daeons run on powerful dedicated servers (not vps), this is why you don't have to add ips like for other coins and the blockchain is automaticatly backed up and stored periodically.

Why you need dedicated server? Crypto currency it's a p2p network you can launch the currency even from your home computer.
Sorry for my post, maybe I don't understand something, if I'm wrong, please explain.
bitcoin is more centralized than people realize...
Servers are a security to  guarantee a strong and fast network.

You still don't answer the question about why do you need dedicated servers and a backup of the blockchain ?.
Backing up the blockchain is so weird, since there is no way to RESTORE the backup to the network.

12  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] Emerald - EMD, an innovative alt coin! New version released! on: August 11, 2013, 09:15:52 AM
Well glad it went well for you.  I mined in this pool for a short spell today and when i saw i could not get paid hitting the 100 mark , i jumped out.  I noticed some heavy players were jumping in and out , must have discovered the same.

Maybe they need to fix something however I got returned e mail when I tried to send a 'heads up' note to the support e mail listed on the site.

I would not suggest mining in this pool until this is all sorted out , personally I may never return.

I understand mistakes happen and this is nickles and dimes. Still if you have an e mail address up and it is not working for support you may do better to just use a valid e mail address and not answer people !! lol

no hard feelings but figured it was worth a note here.

come mine while diff is still low, at the pool that has been up and running since launch Smiley

14  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [XPM] [ANN] Primecoin v0.1.2 Release Windows Build Ready on: August 04, 2013, 07:18:54 PM
Thanks man, any chance of an official mac client, i have a few more cpu's i could get on line !!

In v0.1.2 release:

  • Miner performance improvement. This release includes several miner performance improvements, which have also been incorporated into several miners on the market. The official client is not expected to be competitive with market solutions, so serious miners should explore the current best performing miners on the market.
  • chainsperday estimate is included in getmininginfo output. This stat is experimental so it should not be taken as an accurate estimate of prime chain rate of the miner.
  • listprimerecords command for users to check all record primechains in Primecoin network.
  • Miscellaneous gui and bug fixes.

This release is not mandatory.

Upgrade Instructions:
  • Backup wallet and take note of balance.
  • Uninstall previous version.
  • Set up the new version v0.1.2.
  • Start up primecoin and check wallet balance.
Contributors to the release:

David L. Unger
geeknik
joebauers
mikaelh
Sunny King

Cheers!

Windows build ready at https://sourceforge.net/projects/primecoin/files/
Linux build is being prepared and will be published later.

16  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [XPM] [ANN] Primecoin Release - First Scientific Computing Cryptocurrency on: July 25, 2013, 04:44:44 AM
Before I knew about cryptocoins, I ran a lot of GPU's for BOINC distrubuted computing projects. There are/were(?) heaps of CPU based Prime number finding projects but none of them ever used GPU, so I am agreeing that branching is not suitable for the hardware and that is why no one ever bothered to make a program to mine on them. For this reason I suspect we might never see a GPU or ASIC prime number miner.

This question comes from a complete non-computer engineer, but I'm curious. Since ASIC is designed to accomplish a specific task, wouldn't it be possible to create an ASIC to "mine" prime numbers? [This isn't a question about whether it would be a marketable device like the ASIC USB miners, just about the engineering side.]

We need a hyper geek who has:

* Designed processors
* Knows how SHA-256 works on a machine level
* Knows how prime number searching works and how to implement that at the machine level

They should be able to say for sure.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cunningham_chain
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Generating_primes

My brain just hurts looking at these pages and the links that follow.  Shocked

I have extensive knowledge of prime number theory and how modern computers can be used to find them but this is not going to 'unlock' more efficient methods of mining the coins. First mining involves more than finding primes. Second and more important in an imaginary world where we had asic chips mining prime coin as the difficulty level shot into the sky the awards of coins per block diminish very low. The design of the coin is such that it yields 'less' the 'more' you throw at it and we would all be in the exact same place we are now.

Personally I think the beta testers of the coin may have perfected some 'better' builds to mine than we have available in public now. I have no proof of this and anyone who helped make this source has a right to use their knowledge to their advantage. We all have the right to not mine the coin.

Until prime coin has some regular uses other than just mining and selling on an exchange it will remain a commodity only. I admire the development team for it's creation at a time when a new coin is launched every other day.  Prime coin is popular now because it is unique and while the long term scientific value to be expected from the project is low it is a great step in a direction to design a coin that does something more than drive up electricity use. My advice is to just enjoy it as it is now. Give it a year or two to develop. I suspect if any 'advanced' methods' of mining prime coin are developed they will not be posted for everyone to use. Anyone that gets a powerful edge is most likely to keep it quiet and mine for their own benefit.

Bitcoin was designed to be a form of currency beyond traditional corporate and government control for the better of all but a majority of posts I read give me the impression most are mining to just make a quick buck. The current money system of the world revolves around greed. The true long term benefit to everyone would be a permanent change in how money changes hands in the world and negation of any entity to just 'print more bills' like all nations do now. I may be a minority opinion here but I think this result if achieved would be a much bigger win for everyone than just a few of us making some money in the short run.

So can we relax about GPU, FPGA, ASIC mining and think of the big picture?

My street smarts tells me you are right. I have not hit a block in 5 days although not running anything too ecxciting (no huge virtual machines or servers) just a few i7's. Thanks  to the members of this forum who took the time to work on and compile the optimized builds.  Once I get things running again here I will send tips.

Love or hate primecoin you have to at least respect the amount of attention it was able to get in a very short time.
First few days were fun and of course the heavy hitters stepped in which is all part of this !

Amazing how 'forced' solo mining has made people step back a little bit and think to earlier times.

For newer people to the scene a new experience.

If people collect coins in the future like they do old silver and gold dollars now having coins from an early block may actually mean something.

I'm guessing at this point either botnets or unreleased GPU miners are scooping up all the coins.

Regular CPU miners appear sidelined, even with their optimized builds.
18  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: HELP!!!!! Premining HELL - Need HELP!!! on: July 14, 2013, 08:17:55 AM
Pre mined coins will destroy any chance of anyone taking your project seriously.  Lots of coins are launching making for a circus like atmosphere.
Listen to the Sr. Members who answered you and someone who is a little newer to the scene.  Find another way.

addnode=68.81.64.95  in case you are one of the few like me fooling with this one

Mining close to two days , note first blocks were 1.0315 now up to 1.0501

Just for thought after reading how difficulty increases
extrapolating the last two days (which is a very small data set on a coin with a
very short history) to see where it can go....

501-315= 186 x 365 then divided by 2 since i am running 48 hours not 24
means this could ramp up really fast,  3.395 . plus the 1 for the block would mean 4.395
is an estimated block award in one year.

Obviously the difficulty could increase faster or slower and 2 days worth of data is hardly anything
you can make long term predictions on but since this is a cpu only mined coin there are a lot of
cpu's out there.

Somehow I find it a long shot all those cpu's will find and mine this coin but one never knows.

Obviously the foundation of why we are all here is bitcoin (also litecoin for me and some others) and no one should deny they deserves the focus.

While we mine those in pools and watch the difficulty shooting up in both it is nice to have a few extras like one and prime coin to run in the background.  In closing I will say reading the Russian thread for this coin in google translate was something that I found very entertaining.
20  Other / Beginners & Help / thanks to shinkicker for the optimized prime coin windows build on: July 11, 2013, 03:45:21 AM
Being new I only have a few coins but I hope to learn quickly.  I have experience in 'other' fields that has attracted me to bitcoin , litecoin and a few others most recently prime coin. I sent this great man 1 ltc as a donation.  I got my first block about an hour after running his build on an i7 3700 using 7 of 8 cores was a great feeling. I have had prime coin running on this machine and another with an i5 for almost 2 days and nothing so I think the build helped. It increased the pps value. Will provide more feedback after a few days. My first ever post after several visits --- i really appreciate all the work a lot of you guys do here. Peace
