1  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [ANN] MemoryCoin | CPU Only | Trade on Bter | 5% Reward Reduction Per Week on: August 27, 2013, 09:03:07 PM
I'm using a linux deamon (http://dls.21stcenturymoneytalk.org/dls/memorycoin/memorycoind-linux-x64.xz) to mine. Since today I get this message:

memorycoind getmininginfo

...
error: {"code":-2,"message":"Safe mode: Warning: Displayed transactions may not be correct! You may need
to upgrade, or other nodes may need to upgrade."}
...

Is there a new linux command line binary?

There have not been any changes that should require an upgrade since that was built.

There are a few things that can cause that message, including crosstalk with bitcoin. Do you run bitcoin as well?

Can you do something like

memorycoind getinfo | pastebinit
memorycoind getpeerinfo | pastebinit
tail -100 ~/.memorycoin/debug.log | pastebinit

or dpaste or whatever pastebin  util you use.

Then send us the urls you pasted that to?

We will be updating the linux builds later this week, but that should not be a factor for that message.

BTW, can you please use the thread http://21stcenturymoneytalk.org/index.php/topic,23.0.html for support on our builds.  We are much less likely to miss the post and it keeps this thread uncluttered with things that are probably of interest only to those using our builds.
2  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [ANN] MemoryCoin | CPU Only | Trade on Bter | 5% Reward Reduction Per Week on: August 27, 2013, 08:54:04 PM
hehe, I've prolly been with the linux too much, I actually never had a QT before the powercoin venture. In Windows its logical, but in linux its much simpler if the files used are in one place (rather than the root of the program)

btw: is any of the addnodes online, cos I dont seem to get connection, also dnsseeds fail
why didnt you just use the irc to get nodes.........

Haha, yeah, I agree.  The data file is awkward, especially since the code does not search the path, so you need to cd first to be in the directory with the file before you run it.   Not sure how it would work with the mac app packaging either.   I am hoping it is a temporary kludge and not a permanent fixture.

IRC was removed from bitcoin, for a number of good reasons.  Since this was forked from bitcoin, it no longer has irc for seeding either.  However we did add in dnsseed support to our builds for memorycoin.  So I am curious why you say they are failing?   They should be working. It would be nice to get some more seeds to add to it though. So a report on why it is failing would be good to fix things if needed.

3  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: New forum for Freicoin on: August 27, 2013, 07:42:43 PM
We would be more than willing to create a section for freicoin on our forum ( http://21stcenturymoneytalk.org ) if some of the freicoin folks would use it.
4  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [ANN] MemoryCoin | CPU Only | Trade on Bter | 5% Reward Reduction Per Week on: August 26, 2013, 07:26:40 AM

Hoarders currently have 3 grants now (MVTEoEoUtxKDFLVRJt8c79oqP5C2GB9oBP and MVTEoEoHX4XhRkJnkGVLKDYhHG4MbJDVCT\MVTEoEohmThgMYijuR2oPZSmStTdycrGzp - same person).  This is not acceptable.  I have cancelled all my BUY orders.  No use in supporting a coin that is not meeting its purpose.  Hoarders have killed this coin.  If not resolved, I'm dumping all mine tomorrow and declaring dead.

Hoarders, join the voting pool, or you will be killing the coin.  You are standing in the way of needed development.

I actually think the voting pool had the opposite of the effect that was intended.  It took away a number of the mid tier holders votes from the existing grants,  and let the hoarders stay in longer then they otherwise would have.  Will be interesting to see if that changes anytime soon or not.

I think it is way too soon to call it dead, as the dynamics are still in flux.
5  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [ANN] MemoryCoin | CPU Only | Trade on Bter | 5% Reward Reduction Per Week on: August 25, 2013, 08:52:49 PM
Why are the foundations (that are requesting our votes) not voting themselves?

->Balance:1191 - MVTEoEomFfe7WuSEepMLsorgYzCQGBVw1z   <-21st Century foundation
---->Wasted:1191 (Add More Preferences)

->Balance:454 - MVTEoEo5LgYAMVh95oBBfGPj2eCDzkuJC3    <-FreeTrade
---->Wasted:454 (Add More Preferences)

The 21st Century foundation has potentially 1191 votes it is not using!  Can't they just send one MEG satashi to themselves?

FreeTrade still needs help (your votes) to get grants.  {He probably is moving coins to a voting wallet.}

Oh, we are voting.   It just seems our votes are currently not mattering.

Also, looks like we have started to lose our grant.  I guess the coin users don't like voting to support the coin development.

Ixcoin - IXC - thread
Small parameter changes.

Surprised this made the list for that.

Yeah, I was undecided... but IMHO it paved the way for what came later.

I think it was the multicoin client that paved the way for ixcoin. I need to find some time to dig
up the threads later to confirm the timeline.

Can't find anything on it. Wonder how that was supposed to work Smiley

Not sure it did work, but that was the idea of it.

It was part of the multicoin coins, along with weeds.

Quark (QRK) deserves a spot on here. Multiple different hashing algos makes it stand out from a lot of others and this also makes it quite secure to mine. Definitely innovative.
Multiple hashing algorithms

Was QRK the first?

I think I heard of RU having it first.

this does not sound like it:

"RuCoin project is not intended that any develop and improve, and vice versa, is the most conservative position in order to maintain and use all that has been proven in Bitcoin."   https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=48582.msg577990#msg577990

No, it does not sound like it from that.  Later though they added dual hashes from what I read, to try and become more 51% resistant.   Will try and see if I can find the info again later when I have more time.

This shall become a list of Bitcoin derived alternative cryptographic currencies that came up with technical innovation. In order of appearance.

Devcoin - DVC - thread
90% of generation goes to foundation.

It does not go to the foundation.  There is not a foundation even.  It goes out as share rewards to people that complete bounties.

Ixcoin - IXC - thread
Small parameter changes.

Surprised this made the list for that.

Quote
Anoncoin - ANC - thread
I2P support.

The I2P support started as a patch for bitcoin.

There is also memorycoin, which has a vote/grant system.

There was Beer which was the first attempt  to fix the value of a blockchain currency to a commodity.

Ixcoin isn't dead, I guess.
It's traded at Cryptsy and it's merge mined Smiley
Thanks. It's a zombie.  Cheesy

SC still processes transactions and is traded as well on mcxnow.
9  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [ANN] MemoryCoin | CPU Only | Trade on Bter | 5% Reward Reduction Per Week on: August 24, 2013, 06:06:36 PM
what blockheight is it now ? atm I see atleast 2 different invalid chains at heights 2479 and 2962. Looks a bit like a forked blockchain to me. Tho it could be some obsolete chains ghosting around while im at initial DL.
EDIT: from debug.log -> "receive version message: version 70001, blocks=4407" hmm....

I am having an issue with block 2479 when I compile with gcc 4.2.   On the same system (BSD) I get an instant
crash when I compile with gcc 4.8 or clang 3.3.

What compiler or build are you using?  What OS?
10  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: STRIKE! on: August 22, 2013, 03:25:12 PM
Oh noes! My MemoryCoin grant has been defunded. I'm on strike.

Hi,
Without some context the reaction doesn't look like the most mature one....

OTOH, I really think that we need some kind of documentation about how those grants work and how to find out the options to vote and how to vote...

MC

Someone made a grant for that:   http://21stcenturymoneytalk.org/index.php/topic,40.0.html
11  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: STRIKE! on: August 22, 2013, 02:04:29 AM

Sorry, FT, so you have 9%...
I thought it was yourself + 2 Foundations in the Top 5 receiving grants...
Which would add up to > 30% (I've asked before what your holdings are to clarify this, FT).

As I understand it,   FT started with the  Memory Coin Foundation Address.  Later, when most of the grants were going to unknowns, he also added addresses to eventually be donated to the EFF and AI.
He also created a grant for himself.    As far as I know, only the MCF and his grant ever got
funded out of these?

The 21st Century grant is ours, for running the Block Viewer,  providing a forum section, maintaining
a seed node and helping with the code, such as keeping it buildable on other systems then windows.

Then  I think there are some grants for a giveaway and profit share grant.

So far I think a good percentage of the grants have gone to unknowns still.

12  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Bitcoin wallet QT any better for mac? on: August 21, 2013, 11:22:20 PM
I have gone back to a version that used BDB, as leveldb was just too flakey.
13  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [ANN] MemoryCoin | CPU Only | 5% Reward Reduction Per Week on: August 21, 2013, 08:39:10 PM
Hey guys, are you using windows or what ?
I'm running memorycoin on Linux without any crash for days.
Whereas XPM is crashing on the same network bug once every 2 or 3 days.

It's simple : for memorycoin I don't use an autorestart script !

Yes, using Windows 7 64-bit and having problems with memorycoin since day 1.
I do like memorycoin so I took the effort of restarting my machines every time it crashed or hanged, but it got so bad that my 6-core i7 could only run for a few blocks before hanging. Now I just switched back to XPM until FreeTrade has got the bugs sorted out.
XPM works fine for me, only crashed once in 2 weeks time whereas I had to restart memorycoin many, many times a day.

Do the issues go away when you limit the mining to a single core/thread?
14  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Don't be a hypocrite on: August 21, 2013, 08:14:37 PM
Satoshi pre-mined a million coins before he/she released Bitcoin and the people who go after pre-mined coins completely ignore that fact.

I would say the fact gets ignored because it is false.
15  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Don't be a hypocrite on: August 21, 2013, 08:10:29 PM
Bitcoins are a premine.

Don't be a liar.
16  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [DGC] $30,000 Investment Acquired on: August 21, 2013, 05:46:26 PM
# of coins is irrelevant when calculating market cap.

Really?  So just how do you calculate market cap then?
17  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: [7000GH/s] p2pool: Decentralized, DoS-resistant, Hop-Proof pool on: August 21, 2013, 03:12:31 PM
P2Pool Sub-Pool for Low Hash-Rate Miners
(...)
Any feedback? Does this sound like a reasonable idea? Any big problems with it?
Why not reanimate p2pmining?

That is being done I think.   Fuzzy Pool

As I understand it the btc part all works, but the mm needs to hit some blocks so it can be tested and fixed up.

18  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Ixcoin TODO on: August 21, 2013, 03:41:30 AM
The oppertunity cost is ~$0.  It can be merged mined right along side Bitcoin.  The hardware, labor and electricity would still be spent if one was only mining Bitcoin.  Nobody is mining this at a loss it is just a free bonus on top of the BTC.

To be fair, while it is low, it is not zero.  Running it takes up cpu and memory and network resources etc.

But aren't those cycles already 100% used for bitcoin?  That's how I understand it.  You get the other merge mined coins literally for free. Frankly I don't see how the same cycles can hunt and decode different mathematical puzzles without taking away from the main task, but that's what I've heard from a lot of pros on here.

No, only the mining hashing cycles are common.  You have other cpu cycles used by the daemon still being used.  Now if you are just mining, and using a pool, those costs are born by the pool, so you will not see them directly as a pool user.

Edit:

Ah, just noted that you said opportunity cost not cost... ok...   that would be zero when mined with bitcoin, and other mm coins, and be part of the cost of switching from them.

20  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Explorers needed DMD, AMC, EMD, FST, GLX, GDC, IXC, MST, MEM, NAN, NBL, NRB, STR on: August 20, 2013, 02:38:11 PM
Anyone have or want to create an explorer for any of these coins I don't believe they have one.

DMD, AMC, EMD, FST, GLX, GDC, IXC, MST, MEM, NAN, NBL, NRB, STR

We will be putting one up for IXC soon.  Fuzzy Pool will be sponsoring it.

If you know of anyone willing to sponsor the others we can probably put something up for them as well.
