I just used it on my Macbook last night - it worked just fine!  Even better than on my work computer!  :-D

The guy who gave it to me sent me a link for drivers.  :-)

Now, I will also be using this on my MacBook.  You mentioned that laptops have weak USB ports - will this be a problem?

ASCIMINER Block Erupter.  Actually, I didn't buy it so much as a guy was getting rid of his old hardware.  I know it's not the best option out there, but I figured it would get me started.  :-)

It is scanning the COM port, but it keeps saying the device times out.

This wouldn't be because I have other USB devices plugged in, would it?

Okay, I'm having a problem.  I just got a USB bitcoin miner, but when I run Bitminter, it says "no external devices detected."  When I try and rescan, it keeps trying to scan the serial port, not my USB port.  Is there any way I can get it to run off the USB port and the miner I have plugged in there?

I got some newbie questions:

  • What are "workers"? I only have one. Would it be better to have more? How would i get more?
  • What's the difference between namecoins and bitcoins?

Workers are the actual computers that earn bitcoins for you.  If, say, you have a home computer and a work computer, and you use BitMinter on both, those would be two separate workers.

I believe namecoins are a similar type of currency to bitcoins, and Bitminter allows you to earn both.  Can anyone correct me on this?

Yes, unless you plug an ASIC into it Smiley

All right then.  Any recommendations for an inexpensive ASIC?   Smiley

As for any other computer with a dedicated graphics card, I believe you just open BitMinter client and it will see the GPU and allow you to start mining with it with a push of a button.

All right, I'll try to find it on my work computer and on my wife's computer then.  Thanks!

Please note that Intel HD Graphics 3000 cannot be used for mining because it does not support OpenCL.

So that would mean that a MacBook Pro is basically worthless for mining?

Okay, what about my work computer then?  I don't know what graphics card it has, but if it can be used, how would I access GPU mining as opposed to CPU mining?

You want to run the GPU and not the CPU.  There are options in the main window to "engine start" it.  If your GPU is not listed you might not have a compatible one.  CPU mining is completely useless at this point and the Dr is planning on removing support soon.
What machine are you running, specs etc?

I'm running a 2011 MacBook Pro with Snow Leopard, but if need be, I can switch it to Windows 7 using BootCamp.  I'm also using Windows on my work computer, but I don't know the exact specs.

How would I access GPU mode?  I don't see where to do it on the control panel.

Thanks for your help - I really am a newbie!

Hi guys!

I'm sorry if this question has been posted already, as I'm not only new to BitMinter, but BitCoin in general.  But I am finding that the BitMinter client is slowing down my computer substantially as to almost make it unusuable.  It's also kept my computer running hot - as I've always had the fan running when I leave the client running all night.  And yet, for my efforts, I've made just barely under 1/5th of one cent worth of bitcoins so far.

I've gotten the warning "Warning: Electricity Wasting Slow CPU implementation in use" when I've used it.  I don't know if this has anything to do with the above, but I suspect it might.

Any help on this matter would be appreciated.  I suspect that you would all appreciate my help mining bitcoins for all!  :-)

Thanks!
