the fee of the litecoin network is super cheap, I paid 20 cents today. But the exchange's fee, unfortunately, is up for them to define, and sometimes they do abuse customers. 3 dollars is fine though, in some countries the exchanges charge like 50

exodus is good; however, like most things involving bitcoin, isn't very user friendly

you'll need to know how to keep yourself safe when using a desktop wallet. I choose to use a hardware wallet because I don't trust my own skills to do so

once your coins are stored with you there will be no exchange fees, making them cheap to move around. Though with bitcoin right now the fees are very high, making it unadviseable to move small amounts with it
2  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Is Bitcoin really secure? on: January 02, 2018, 03:32:00 AM
Yes and no. There are a bunch of vulnerabilities which you need to take action to avoid:

get a password manager

go changing every password you have. use several characters (30+)

create and memorize a 7 word master password, at least

then go setting up 2fa in every account you have. no SMS, google authenticator

every time you set one up, write down the code in case you lose your phone. Pen and paper, no prints

make two copies, store in separate places

put a pin on your phone

buy a hardware wallet (one that has a screen on it). if you're really paranoid, you may buy two of them from diferent brands - if one of them presents a software vulnerability, the other probably won't, since the softwares are independently developed

set up your wallet. write down the seed with pen and paper - NO saving it on the pc, NO flash drive, i don't care if you encrypt it - just don't save it digitally in any circumstance. No printing either - pen and paper

actually write TWO copies of that seed. be creative and store it somewhere where noone will find it

every time you transfer bitcoin, triple-check the amount AND the first and last 4 characters in the address

if your coins really grow in value, get a fireproof safe and put the seed in there

bank vaults are an option too, and they're good because you can leave the vault access for your relatives in your will

it's way too soon to criticise bitcoin as a currency. The technology is in it's infancy, nobody should expect it to be fully functional and perfect in 2017.

problems will appear and improvements will be made, just the same as any other new technology

and whoever has had to receive a SWIFT bank transfer knows that the quality of this service is so shitty, the bar is set very low. bitcoin just needs to be slightly less shitty in order to become the best currency available
4  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: WHO LOST COIN ON YOBiT on: December 22, 2017, 12:54:25 AM
yobit's users lost about 25% of their coins.

and not only yobit got hacked this month, mining platform NiceHash did too.

Hacks are happening fast and are proving hard to keep up with. Someone please make a website "bitcoinhacks.com" and keep it updated as a reminder for people to keep their private keys safe
5  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: John McAfee start sharing his thoughts on Alts on: December 22, 2017, 12:42:17 AM
Then I looked up the CEO and his previous jobs are managing retail clothing stores.  WTF

nice detective work LOL. I never thought of doing that. I thought I was thorough just because I read whitepapers, but obviously I need to step up my game
6  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: John McAfee bets his dick that BTC will hit $1 Million USD on: December 21, 2017, 12:58:15 AM
Anyway, will people remember his bet after three years?  Anyway, let us just wait and see.

Absolutely. I just put a reminder on my cell's calendar

if everyone else forgets, I won't.

read this amazing story. It's a huge thrill

https://www.wired.com/story/i-forgot-my-pin-an-epic-tale-of-losing-dollar30000-in-bitcoin/

[now spoilers, in case you haven't read yet]

the point to the story in this thread is, even a hardware wallet can have vulnerabilities. It's still very safe, as the glitch was fixed in the following Trezor update, and anyway it required the hacker to have physical access to the wallet. But they're not perfect.

So you you want to be really paranoid, use 2 wallets from different brands and put half of your coins in each. Since the softwares are independently developed, it's unlikely that both would be compromised at the same time

and use a fireproof safe for the seeds
9  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Virtual Box for wallet safe keeping doubt on: December 20, 2017, 10:29:57 PM
Guys, I got into a coin to which Ledger doesn't offer support, and I felt unsafe just using a PC wallet for it.

A friend recommended using virtual box and setting up a virtual machine with Linux

I did that, and at some point the program warned me about a feature called "keyboard capturing", if I remember correctly

As far as I understand, this makes whatever you type while the virtual box is selected only go into the virtual box, and not be registered by the host machine. Is this the case or did I misunderstand?

And does this mean this feature offers protection against keylogging?

Is this a good strategy or are there better ways of keeping the coins safe while Ledger doesn't offer support for it?

with all due respect... you must be new here
11  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: BTC FEES SO HIGH on: December 20, 2017, 02:31:05 AM
I know it sucks, but for as long as this isn't solved, it's incredibly easy to just use any other coin to perform your transactions. Fast and cheap.

Unless you want to buy cryptos with cash AND you happen to live in a country that only has bitcoin exchanges, there's really no reason for you to stress yourself by paying high fees and waiting hours for transactions
12  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: John McAfee bets his dick that BTC will hit $1 Million USD on: December 20, 2017, 01:11:38 AM
his first prediction was 500k, which was already bold.

then he doubled it.

curious to see what he'll do if it doesn't happen.
13  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Should we support altcoins ? on: December 19, 2017, 10:40:06 PM
I'm pretty sure the future won't require just one cryptocurrency, but several with different characteristics and functions

from all points of view we should support altcoins. If you like the technology, especially if the team is innovating and bringing something new to the table, it deserves our incentive.

so even if this specific coin dies some day, it's innovation may be incorporated in whatever new coin is created in the future, making it better

so by all means, support alts. This WILL make the world a better place!
14  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Is it a good time to start buying bitcoins? Today at 09:12:42 PM on: December 19, 2017, 10:33:33 PM
it will always be a good time for as long as bitcoin hasn't reached it's full market potential. Don't listen to people who tell you you shouldn't buy because the price is too high - they've been saying that since january. Also there's no need to fear buying in an all-time-high, and there's no reason to wait for a dip. If you try doing that, the price may simply go up and never come back to where you were aiming to buy. And you'll be the fool looking for the next dip (which may actually be higher than today's high)

the only "analysis" that I take seriously is: will cryptocurrency be extremely important for mankind in the future? If so, buy some whenever you have the money. And screw the short term variations.
15  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Is it too late for someone with a small savings to get involved in Bitcoin? on: December 19, 2017, 02:09:23 AM
in my view, no matter how big the price seems as compared to the past, we are very far away from the cryptos potential value. Though there is no exact way of measuring that potential, you can compare the crypto market with other markets to have an idea

but one of the main reasons that make me believe that the value has a long way to go before it reaches it's peak is the fact that bitcoin is still very user unfriendly.

right now it's almost impossible for a grandma to use bitcoin safely. Avoiding hacker attacks, learning to use a wallet such as electrum, setting up a hardware wallet, keeping the seed safe, creating a decent pin, checking the address before sending a transaction (they probably can't even see the tiny letters), triple checking the amount to be sent. All it takes is one screw up

But this could well change in the future, when more of the demand for cryptocurrencies starts coming from the unsavy. Because this creates a market for services targeted at making the coins safe and easy to be used by the average person

And when this happens, and regular people start feeling like it's safe to use cryptocurrency, the room for the market to grow will increase tremendously.

(yes i took this idea from andreas antonopoulos, I just worded it differently)
