1  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: CoinTerra announces its first ASIC - Hash-Rate greater than 500 GH/s on: April 30, 2014, 05:48:00 AM
It's getting warm around here these days and my ASICs are throttling to prevent overheating (which is good).  One of my chips has always run hotter than the rest.

HAS ANYONE OPENED UP THEIR SYSTEM AND RESEATED THE COOLERS?  Did it help?  I'm thinking I might need to do so with mine, they are regularly peaking over 100C and averaging in the 90s and then throttling.

Also, has anyone put alternative cooling on their boxes?  I've been thinking of running a big water-cooling system to my two systems to combat the heat.  Thoughts?

WOW...before the new FW I had one machine running at about 1.3TH/s and one running at about 1.5TH/s (at the pool).
After the new FW upgrade, both systems are running at about 1.6TH/s  Grin

edit - the "status" page in the web interface still reports about the same speed as before....1.61TH/s each...so it looks like they've been able to close the gap between what the machines were reporting and what the pools were accepting.  While still nowhere near 2TH/s...but it's good progress, I've gained a total of 400GH/s with the new FW (about 0.06 BTC per day at current diff).

2nd edit - the processors are also running much hotter now.  In both boxes, I've got a core hitting over 90C...a little disconcerting considering the weather here is still pretty cold and the summer is on the way.  I'm going to see what adjusting the power stepping will do.

That's about the least helpful reply you could give to what I presume is your answer to this question:

anyone know who to update cgminier , is this done via SSH? the stock version is 3.12.0 and well 4.0 is out and 4.0.1 is on its way

The answer is: it's not easy. Cointerra has some kind of minimalistic linux build running in a small 32MB partition. They have a full Angstrom build mounted at /Angstrom but you can't run any binaries from there (the dynamic linker seems to not want to run them). The cgminer binary that's running in all stock Cointerra boxes right now was custom build against uClibc, a minimalistic libc for embedded systems. If you want to build your own version of cgminer, you must either cross compile your own armv7 binary that links against the installed libraries in the beaglebone (in /lib), or get the full Angstrom distro somehow running and install a build environment with opkg.

KNC runs identical hardware, but you can actually run opkg right from the command line and get git, gcc, etc. installed without changing anything. On cointerra's build, not so.

tl;dr; it's not easy, and I'm curious myself.

You're right...I misunderstood.  I thought he wanted to update his config.  My bad LOL  Embarrassed

I just got my two TerraMiner IVs yesterday (early January batch).

if you don't mind me asking, what rough order number and date did you have for your Jan batch delivery, and how long did it take to go from "Shipping Preparation" to "Shipped"?

I'm seeing about 5% less on Eligius than reported in the console.  1540 on Eligius VS 1620 in the console.

I just got my tracking number for my two miners....should have them up and running tomorrow.

    Order #594
    Paid on AUG 23rd, 2013
Received tracking on FEB 11th, 2014
Received system on FEB 12th, 2014
    average hash rate 1st Miner - 1.6 TH/s
average hash rate 2nd miner - 750 GH/s (only 1 chip operational ATM)
power draw - approx 1900W each, based on readings from my "KILL A WATT"

I'm a bit disappointed that one of the chips in my 2nd box is not running.  But Peter responded to my text message immediately and we're troubleshooting the problem at this time.

After two hours...as you can see, one of my miners is only running a single chip Sad

BTW - I installed a 70A 120V circuit breaker in my main breaker box and ran two 20A dual-plug outlets.  Each miner has each of its PSUs plugged into either outlet so that both miners are sharing both ciruits.  Each circuit should be good for 20A * 120V = 2400W.

Hey great news...When I was texting with Peter earlier, he said the beagleboards can be finicky and to try restarting...I tried three times and no-dice.  But I figured I'd try one more time before heading to bed and the fourth board came online...so I am now running full-steam-ahead :-)

The first one has settled in at 1620 GH/s
And the second one which I just brought online 10 minutes ago is currently hashing at 1550 GH/s

OK guys, thanks for all the wiring advice...I'll get it redone.
9  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: CoinTerra announces its first ASIC - Hash-Rate greater than 500 GH/s on: February 13, 2014, 12:58:06 AM
I've rebooted 3 times, but the second chip has never started Sad

I want to open the box and troubleshoot, but the systems are sealed and I don't want to lose warranty support, so I'm waiting on "support". Roll Eyes
10  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: CoinTerra announces its first ASIC - Hash-Rate greater than 500 GH/s on: February 12, 2014, 11:33:26 PM
There are differences in the individual chips, some will naturally run hotter than others...in addition, mounting the waterblocks is not going to be identical on all chips....so there are a lot of variables that could affect temps...as long as they are in a safe range you should not have anything to worry about.

@jjiimm_64...well, due to the outlet being limited to 20A...wouldn't it "go" before the wires (unless there is a short circuit in the wiring or something...), which should handle 20A just fine.
11  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: CoinTerra announces its first ASIC - Hash-Rate greater than 500 GH/s on: February 12, 2014, 11:03:54 PM
Yes, keep in mind that each "hot" should only be pulling a max of around 18A (2100W peak / 120V = 17.5A)

I figured this would be fine since most homes are run with 15A circuits and 14 gauge wire.
12  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: CoinTerra announces its first ASIC - Hash-Rate greater than 500 GH/s on: February 12, 2014, 09:57:11 PM
Yes, I used 12 gauge...the breaker is double posted...but it says that its internally connected.  Did I f-up?
13  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: CoinTerra announces its first ASIC - Hash-Rate greater than 500 GH/s on: February 12, 2014, 09:08:47 PM
I should also point out however, that Peter Kirby (CoinTerra) responded to my texts within a couple minutes and has been very communicative.  He has already escalated my case to support and they are addressing the problem in a VERY professional & high priority fashion (in my opinion).

im not defending CT.

Really  Roll Eyes

Quote from: aerobatic
really?  at 1.6 TH in a 4U single box, you're a bit disappointed ?   they just showed proof... working... the fastest, lowest cost, and smallest working bitcoin mining box that has ever existed... running with only four chips and by the looks of it, at 70 degrees according to their stats, they're not even breaking a sweat....  and you're disappointed?     And they said each day their engineers make it go faster...

they've literally gone from yesterday not being in the mining business... to today, having an extremely impressive box...  hashing faster than any box I've ever seen... that i would happily take delivery of tomorrow...!

Quote from: aerobatic
Now all they're doing is tweaking it to go 20% faster before they ship it?  heck, thats the smallest leap of faith I've ever been asked to make.

I agree with you that at this point, the best thing to do is to deliver what they have.  My complaint is the same one we discussed a few weeks ago, that they have over-promised and under-delivered.  This doesn't seem to bother you, and I'm trying to figure out why.
18  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: CoinTerra Update: Engineering and Production status on: January 27, 2014, 06:29:39 PM
The production units that we have assembled and tested so far are running at between 1.63TH/s and 1.72TH/s with power draw at the wall between 1900W and 2100W – typically 20% higher than our anticipated target of 1650W

20%??? What happened to:

The chip will consume less than 300w, for a performance of 504 Gh/s.

Sounds like you missed the power target by quite a bit more than 20%.

they didnt say what their asics draw.  they said what the system draws at the wall.. which includes a built in controller, plenty of fans, a liquid cooling system (pumps).  and they confirmed that their power conversion circuitry is what theyre redesigning for the new version...

anyway... what any asic company says (based on simulation) before they get their chips back, and what they say (when its fully tested and includes all the real-world losses) after their chips are in a system always seem to be different.. and i cant think of anyone who delivered a system with the same power draw as their specs.   can you?

WOW, my legitimate concerns have been confirmed now, and you have been proved to be on the wrong side of this debate...yet you continue to defend CT despite their clear failures.  Are you a shill?  Or just defending a position you've over-invested yourself in emotionally?

Another update has been posted Smiley
http://cointerra.com/update-prototype-testing-completed-certification-production-week/

Quote
DATELINE: 1/20/14 Austin, TX

Our last update on January 14th included a short video of a working TerraMiner IV, and further information regarding the testing and characterization status.

Over the past week our engineering team has been busy conducting some board tweaks needed before we can push the button to commence production of our first batch of TerraMiners.

At the same time we have been preparing the hardware for mandatory FCC and CE product testing and certification, and UL safety testing and certification which we have been informed will take approximately 2-3 days to complete.

We expect to begin shipping the initial run of units at the end of this week, incrementally ramping up production for volume shipping commencing next week. In parallel the production lines at both of our Central Texas manufacturing facilities are presently assembling the chassis (including the rear fans and power supplies), front panels (with fans, grills and LEDs), and the other non-board components in preparation for the fully-populated boards to be dropped in for final assembly and a short but essential burn-in quality control testing period.

...

We have signed off on the first release version of the software which controls the TerraMiner, having made some final tweaks to the web-based Control Panel, and flashed to each BeagleBone Black controller board. The user guide, with step-by-step instructions for setting up, configuring and operating the TerraMiner will be posted to the CoinTerra website prior to shipping our first production units.

We expect to be able to post another status report later this week with updates on the certification processes and shipment of our very first production miners.
