1  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Women have to take the lead! on: February 18, 2014, 10:18:17 AM
I am both a woman, and deeply passionate about Bitcoin. I am an early adopter, and self-taught. I read the whitepaper, and thought to myself, "This is an excellent investment opportunity." I did the rest on my own. For the past 2+ years, it has been ME preaching about the wonders of the protocol to anyone who would listen. I don't have any background in programming or math, but I am smart enough to identify a revolutionary technology when I see it.

My point is, I have a vagina between my legs, and I am not ugly, fat, socially awkward, or stupid. I'm also tired of having to say that in order to qualify myself as a successful member of society on internet forums. I'm sure someone will reply "Tits or gtfo" to this post, which is exactly the pervasive attitude problem I seek to address.

Now we have to realize that a Woman will never bother to buy a coin, because that is nerdy and Women don't like nerdy.

No Woman hoards money. They will spend it as fast as they can, thus finally giving Bitcoin the possibility to be a real currency.

As of yet you will have to help a Woman to make a transaction with Bitcoin every time, because they can't be bothered learning how to do it, be it one transaction, be it 1000. You'll alwasy start at step one. Bitcoin-Transactions are just something no Woman wants (or should have) to learn, because she really has other concerns, like dressing nice and going to the Prom and be an actress.

While OP purported to voice something resembling a worthwhile sentiment about bringing women into the BTC community, the above quotes are foolish marginalizations that do not reflect the wisdom that this community will need to stand up to the major government opposition that is likely coming. I doubt that someone like Roger Ver or Marc Andreessen is chortling behind a computer screen at their taunting of the few women who actually show themselves around here. Sure, female BTCers are a rare breed at the moment. Sure, my comment history indicates an initial unfamiliarity with how transactions are broadcast. (How else would you expect someone self-taught to learn?) But I would bet that there were even fewer women nerding around the fledgling internet in 1995. A critical first step towards getting more women into the community is to BE NICE to us, and that means not making blanket assumptions. Just because your ex-girlfriend is a shopaholic doesn't mean I am.

The question has been raised as to why women seem to be uninterested in cryptocurrency. In my experience a lot of men aren't interested in it, either. Every time I hang out with my boyfriend, he listens to me go on for at least 10 minutes about how awesome Bitcoin is. Then I encourage him to buy some, and he says, "That sounds like too much work. I'll never remember all those passwords. I don't get it." He's a smart guy. He just doesn't want to put the effort in to understand it. It drives me crazy. I only have one other male friend who really knows what Bitcoin is, and he doesn't own any. Does that mean that men aren't interested in Bitcoin? Obviously not.

Anecdotal evidence aside, during this emergence of cryptocurrency, it's really about what people are made out of. Do they have enough faith in their intellect to study a new financial instrument? Are they technically savvy enough to protect themselves against being hacked? Do they have the discipline to not spend more than what they can afford to lose? Will they panic-sell the moment there are thunderclouds on the horizon? All of these qualities are gender-neutral.

I am holding on long-term to the roller coaster here. I have done my homework. I am confident. And if I'm wrong, I'll be ok.

2  Other / Beginners & Help / "Failed to write undo data" on Bitcoin QT 0.8.0 on OSX 10.7.2 on: December 10, 2013, 10:31:44 PM
Just last night my Bitcoin QT client started getting all wonky on me. Luckily I have backed up my wallet.dat file, so I'm not freaking out, but this is becoming a pain in the ass. I'm somewhat technically literate, but all the Googling I have done to figure out what is going on is way over my head.

I have managed to look at the debug file in Users/Library/Application Support/Bitcoin, and have identified the trouble area, but I have no idea what it means or how to fix it.

received block 0000000000000002f1cbee31294d567a37509a1ad6805f0517452a3db2db1de7
Flushing wallet.dat
Flushed wallet.dat 30ms
connection timeout
Unable to open file /Users/me/Library/Application Support/Bitcoin/blocks/rev00077.dat
ERROR: CBlockUndo::WriteToDisk() : OpenUndoFile failed
*** Failed to write undo data

Some of the reading I have done says that it could have something to do with an open files limitation on OSX, but I don't see anything in my system log file (/var/log/system.log) that says "too many files".

My first thought would be to update the Bitcoin QT client, but I am nervous about updating. I don't want to make the problem worse.

Edit: Had mistaken Bitcoin QT version number in subject title.

36 hours and a support ticket later, I still have not received my coins from Mt. Gox. No response from support, either.

Prior to this, I didn't understand all the dislike for Mt. Gox that I sometimes see here and other places. I'm a long-term holder, so the issues with USD withdrawals didn't concern me so much. Silly me thought that withdrawing BTC would be easy, quick, and safe. I just finished reading another thread here from just a couple weeks ago where people were having the same problem. Now I get it.

I will never go near Mt. Gox with my coins again.

Ok, thanks. I am slightly less stressed out now. Already contacted Mt. Gox support.

I'm verified with them. I have previously made many successful bitcoin transfers to and from Mt. Gox. I'm biting my nails over this because I don't know what the holdup is. I should at least see the unconfirmed transaction on blockchain.info, right?

Hello, apologies in advance, this is my second time posting a super-noob question about bitcoins in 24 hours.

For various reasons, yesterday I imported a paper wallet worth 5 BTC to Mt. Gox. I personally have had a good experience with them over the past couple years, although I don't trust my coins on online exchanges. The morning after I imported the 5 BTC to Mt. Gox (today), I transferred it out into a brand-new paper wallet.

I have tested using paper wallets and now understand how they work. The first few times I did this, I looked up the receiving bitcoin address on blockchain.info and immediately saw the transaction, although it might have been unconfirmed.

The problem is that when I look up the address on my new paper wallet, blockchain.info says there has never been a transaction on it and reports a balance of 0 BTC. I'm pretty sure I didn't transpose a digit when inputting the address into Mt. Gox. I also paid the transaction fee to speed up the process.

Right now I am terrified that my 5 BTC has disappeared into thin air. Is the network just slow due to activity? Mt. Gox is probably slammed today. Could my transaction just be queued?

7  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Wallet says I have 2 BTC more than when I check the balance of my public address on: November 18, 2013, 12:47:09 AM
If the 7 btc was from a sinlge input then the 2 btc probably went to change address. You still have them in your wallet but in a new address.

What impresses more is this though :
I just imported the private key of the paper wallet to Mt. Gox, to ensure that the balance of the wallet was what I expected. Yes, there were only 5 BTC in there.

You are making a super duper secure paper wallet and then you import the private key to mt.gox. wtf?

Maybe I'm missing something in terms of how private keys work. I'll never use the paper wallet I just imported to Mt. Gox ever again. As far as I understand, paper wallet imports are one-time, entire-balance transactions and then the paper wallet is essentially useless. Why would it matter that Mt. Gox has a private key that I will never use again?

I am having a small heart attack right now. I use Bitcoin-QT on OSX (10.7.2). I decided to move a portion of my coins to a paper wallet last weekend. I did a quick test with a throwaway wallet, imported the private key to Mt. Gox, everything checked out. So I felt comfortable moving 5 BTC to a completely new paper wallet.

I verified the transaction on the blockchain and it looked fine. My QT wallet shows a 5 BTC withdrawal, which is of course what I expected. However, when I check the transaction history on the QT wallet's public address, it says that there is an additional 2 BTC debit, which adds up to a 7 BTC withdrawal. I didn't send 7 BTC to my paper wallet. I sent 5 BTC.

I just imported the private key of the paper wallet to Mt. Gox, to ensure that the balance of the wallet was what I expected. Yes, there were only 5 BTC in there.

Basically I am afraid that the wallet on my hard drive is not giving me the correct balance. I don't really understand what change addresses are, but could that have something to do with this? I'm confused. Why is the blockchain telling me I have 2 BTC less what Bitcoin-QT tells me I have?
