1  Other / Meta / Re: Merit hole(!) My 3s fix, More coming... may be on: March 20, 2018, 10:50:41 AM
Since I'm using the forum on my phone right now, it's quite a feat. So, I'll just go over the 3 issues OP provided.

Well it's limited to 50 smerit per month, yea? I don't quite understand this one but there is a limit.

You think that legendary members should not be able to recieve merit or..? If thats the case, that's wrong. Merit is there to show the users posting quality, and that even goes for legendary membera since you didn't have to have any quality in posts to reach that rank before merit was implemented.

I believe that ones with the multiple accounts could use browser like tor sp they won't have the same ip. Also, jn some countries you have to pay for static ip, therefore people can just restart their routers and get new ip.

1) That limit is 50 merits per post. There is no limit on how many merits you can spend in a day or month.

2) This is debatable and different members will have different opinions here. I think OP wanted to say here is that new members are finding it very hard to get merits because of increased competition. Those new members will always face trouble competing with legendary members (who are much experienced).

3) This IP issue can be easily manipulated in a number of ways including the one you mentioned.
2  Other / Archival / Re: Finally Sr. Member on: March 20, 2018, 10:47:12 AM
Congrats on you success. I hope other members get inspired by you and make quality contributions here to rank up. It would have been better if you shared some working tips with all of use. Based on your posting history, one thing I have observed that you are very active on this forum. You had been making posts here consistently for last few days. It is nice that your hard work is recognized and appreciated by the members here.
3  Economy / Speculation / Re: BTC Price < $3000 soon on: March 20, 2018, 10:39:35 AM
Bitcoin will drop to $3000 soon, trust me

This is not going to happen soon. I know that many people might be disappointed with the performance of bitcoins this year as it is just revolving around the $10000 mark for last 3 months. As it touched almost $20000 last year, the expectations from bitcoins has increased manifolds. However, in my opinion that huge jump occurred because of manipulation and thus it was followed by major correction. Now the prices are stable again and it is the best time to invest. It is still the safest bet in crypto, if it ever fails all alt coins will be wiped out.
4  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: Best Altcoin to invest with on: March 20, 2018, 10:36:34 AM
For you, by far what is the best altcoin that I can invest with?
How to know if that altcoin will be a success?
Please share your thoughts.

Most of the members here will suggest the best based on the returns offered but we should also consider how safe is the investment. If a coin can give you 100x return in an year, it is also very much risky. You see all your invested money disappearing by investing in such a coin. If we judge on those parameters, ethereum seems to be a good investment option. It has go a number of advantages over bitcoins and is the only coin that is supposed to leave behind bitcoins in coming years.
5  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin vs Ethereum on: March 20, 2018, 10:07:45 AM
Before investing in any coin, you should compare the percentage return offered by the coins in past few years. No doubt, bitcoin is considered as the leading crypto but ethereum seems to be a better option in my opinion. This is because it is way cheaper than bitcoins and thus the chances of growth are higher. If you observe carefully, a lot of bitcoin share has already been consumed by ethereum which means more people are showing interest in ehtreum these days. I expect this to continue only.
6  Other / Meta / Re: The reality is 99.9% members can never rank up with the new merit system. on: March 17, 2018, 06:34:55 PM
They don't even make the effort to get the title of their threads readable. And when they are readable it can be even worse.
I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. "Bitcoin to the moon" off the shoulder of Orion. I watched "Could bitcoin reach 100.000$ ?" glitter in the dark near the Tannhäuser Gate. All those threads will be lost in entropy, like tears in rain. Time for merit.

These posts may sound funny to experienced investors or people active on internet for long time. Most of the times, these posts are made by new members who just heard about bitcoins from somewhere and have no idea about how to invest money in bitcoins. They make threads like "Can I sell my house for bitcoins ?" which is impractical and laughable. These people are not a big concern for the forum as with time they get matured and stop making such posts. Merit system was introduced to fight against people intentionally posting spam here repeatedly.
7  Other / Meta / Re: Merit & new rank requirements on: March 17, 2018, 06:24:59 PM
Well if you check the stats: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=3093768.msg31934877#msg31934877 local has 34% of the total merits sent. Obviously we don't which local language gives the most but it seems to me that you can gain plenty of merits in your local section.

I think these stats do not show the real picture. These stats also include cases where members have sent 50 merits points for single post (shit post as well) to their alt accounts or friends. Some member posted about this issue in a particular local section. However, if we have some stats collected after removing these merit abuse cases, we can get a better idea about merits awarded in local sections.
8  Other / Meta / Re: Any solution for over-crowded and useless posts? on: March 17, 2018, 06:21:52 PM
So there are countless topics in this forum that are answered in like the third or fourth post but are continued to be filled by shitposters with the answers just repeated in different styles.
One way that I think to stop that is the user who starts a new topic waits for his answer and when he does receive the most satisfactory reply to his topic he awards the reply a merit and then locks the topic so that no further waste gets accumulated in the topic and anyone who wishes to gain knowledge can just read the topic and get only what he exactly wants. What this would also do is make the merit system functional and no one would have to wait for light years to get promoted to a new rank.

So please suggest any of your ideas.
I'll start implementing my idea from now by choosing the best 2 ideas and award each 1 merit!

Here are some solutions to this:

1) There should be a default option enabled that a thread will be automatically locked after it gets a certain number of responses. The member opening the thread will have the option to reopen the thread if he thinks he has still not got  correct reply to his query. Currently the new members ask a question and they disappear from the forum. Members keep giving suggestions and replies and the OP never comes back to lock the thread.

2) Another thing you can do to see recent posts is sort them by replies and views. Those with less replies and views are new ones.
9  Other / Meta / Re: theymos, monetize this forum ;) on: March 17, 2018, 06:16:56 PM
I've been reading meta for some time and I see lots suggestion about signatures and how to reduce spam and so on.
I couldn't find data on how many users are participating in various campaigns, I think that number might be 100K, maybe higher.

What do you think about forcing users to pay for wearing payed signatures?
Why don't you charge few bucks for it? It doesn't need to be big amount of money, it can be around 10-20$ monthly. Discount for larger time period could be included.

Imagine it, 100,000 users will pay 10 - 20 million dollars every year just to participate in campaigns!
You can even donate some money to charity  Smiley

IMO that would be great way to monetize forum and reduce spam.

I do not agree to this idea because:

1) One of the reasons behind the popularity of this forum forum is that it provides an earning opportunity to new members without paying any money. There are various other websites that charge extra yearly fees for special ranks that are associated with privileges like signatures. Those forums will never be able to touch bitcointalk in terms of popularity.

2) Because of the above reason , a lot of new members keep joining the forum in the hope of getting accepted. They also make posts here and all this results in forum getting traffic. Indirectly, these members are also helping forum and are responsible for the advertisement slots being sold here.
10  Other / Meta / Re: Newbie, Jr Members, Members suffering from merit-phobia: Explanations and Advice on: March 17, 2018, 06:13:31 PM
Okay, I am a Jr.member here and I am in the Crypto field for 3 months. I am new to the field.
I should reply your post because I cannot agree with some words/content of your post.

I am from none English speaking country and my English is not very good as well. Also, I am a bounty hunter and I do more than 10 bounty campaigns. I own 5000 friends Facebook and Twitter accounts. If you check my posts you will find lots of bounty submissions. As a newbie, I had no good idea about the forum and community so my posts were not very good but I didn't spam around. Now I post more meaningful and constructive posts and always trying to do something good in the forum.

Being a bounty hunter is not a bad thing and being a bounty hunter doesn't imply the person is a spammer or useless or a shit poster. I am a bounty hunter, Computer engineering undergraduate in the best university of my country, Ethereum developer and a Web developer. I do bounties and trading because I need money.

Spammers are not limited to some specific set of countries; They can be anywhere.

About merits:

I do post constructive, meaningful and helpful posts(Check my posts if someone wants). But I am not getting merits. I try and it is very hard. Merit is a good idea but not fair as it should be. Why? Because for getting merits we need not only good posts but also a bit of luck. Increasing the number of merit sources may help. Let's be hopeful.  Smiley

Finally as a Jr.member, suffering from merit phobia can be perfectly justified in my point of view.

As I can see in your profile, you have already got 3 merit points which is good considering the number of posts you have made. Do not give up on this. Go to the merit stats page and have a look at the recently merited posts and threads. You can then post similar posts and thus increase your chances of getting merits.  I am also a Jr Member currently but I think I will easily become a member by the time I reach the activity required for next rank. Thereafter, I will have to act really smart in order to rank up as I will need 90 points for next rank.
11  Other / Meta / Re: Merit & new rank requirements on: March 01, 2018, 07:20:52 PM
I want to more merdit

You have made only six posts so far and just have  a look at what you have posted so far:

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=1318019;sa=showPosts

You started with pots in alt coins bounties section and also made a  post with single word "good". I am really doubtful if someone here has enough merit to reward you for such posting history.
12  Other / Meta / Re: Merits all over the meta on: March 01, 2018, 07:17:46 PM
Why majority of the post here is about merits??  I know that this category discusses about the forum but ALMOST the topics posted is about merits. Is this now the merit discussion? Repeating topics should be deleted or merge
yeah, this is merit trend
some people assume in meta sections they are easily to get merit
and they came, hoping not to back with empty handed
percentage activities sent-received merit higher here
If not contrary with the rules, why not !
repeating topics or creating similar topics in new topic box, I suggest reported to moderator
how do you think mod ?

I am not a mod but let me tell you what I think. First of all, you should use a full stop to end a sentence and a capital letter to start one. It confuses other members regarding what you want to convey. Regarding people assuming that it is easier to get merit here, I think it is true. Most of the senior members are active here and there are higher chances of a good post getting spotted in this section. Also, if you post some informative thread here, you start getting recognized and members may start reading your other posts.
13  Other / Meta / Re: Merit Requirement for Member Proposal on: March 01, 2018, 07:14:18 PM
No use whatever new systems are introduced there are some people who always find a way to bypass it or violate the system and continue their shit work that fills up the forum with spam and these guys just try to get to higher ranks just to earn some dollars. Maybe Theymos would do something about the people who are farming merit or getting merit too easily.

That is true to some extent. With a new rule, the staff wants to fix the current loopholes. But since no system is perfect, members start looking for ways to bypass that new rule as well. However, overall, this makes things difficult for the spammers. If we keep seeing such changes at regular intervals, a lot of spammers will give up eventually. They will realize that their  tricks will not last very long and it is not thus worth it using here.
14  Other / Meta / Monthly summary not updated on stats page on: March 01, 2018, 07:08:42 PM
I would like to know why is months summary not updated on forum stats: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=stats

I can see stats only till December 2017. Is it being done to hide the number of registrations from competing forums ?
15  Other / Meta / Re: How Do You Feel About This New System?? on: February 02, 2018, 10:17:14 AM
I am very new to this forum so I cannot say much about the new change. I think with time everyone will get used to this new system.

17  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: It's just feeling worse on: February 02, 2018, 10:07:07 AM
I know the feeling as I also invested some money at $15000 level. I am not going to en-cash at current levels as I will be in loss.
18  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Will Ethereum be a Better Investment than Bitcoin in 2018? on: February 02, 2018, 10:05:11 AM
If you are investing for short term, Ethereum is better. But for long run, I will go with Bitcoin as it has performed consistently over the last 9 years.
19  Other / Meta / Re: Review of Merit & other antispam filters used on Bitcointalk (& on other forums) on: February 02, 2018, 10:02:08 AM
In connection with the introduction of the new antispam filter - Merits - I would like to summarize what antispam filters I have found on the Bitcointalk forum. And at the end of this post, I'll also list some other antispam filtering methods that are commonly used on forums.

In my opinion new members should not be allowed to make more than 10 posts in a day. Currently they can post as much as they want after 360 seconds each.
20  Other / Meta / Re: Level of Difficulty of Merit Points to Newbies on: February 02, 2018, 09:57:43 AM
What Jet Cash said is true. You said that the merit system would be a challenge to the people who wants to rank up. I hope you don't mind me asking but why do you want to rank up?

Whether members admit or not, most of them are here because this forum also gives them a chance to earn money. I do not see anything wrong with this provided they follow all the rules here.
