For one, the twilight zone is freaky...
Second, using his real name was probably the best protection. Notice how no one named "Satoshi Nakamoto" was proposed to be satoshi?   Wink

Hiding in plain sight...
3  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: **Breaking news** Satoshi Nakamotos identity revealed on: March 06, 2014, 05:29:37 PM

""He was the kind of person who, if you made an honest mistake, he might call you an idiot and never speak to you again," Andresen says. "Back then, it was not clear that creating Bitcoin might be a legal thing to do. He went to great lengths to protect his anonymity.""

Huh?  Great lengths like using his real name?  This makes no sense.  If this was his real name all along how come nobody has found him yet?

This is like the twilight zone here.
4  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: I suspect Gox sold customer bitcoin for FIAT themselves -fractional reserve - on: March 06, 2014, 09:19:02 AM
I am having big problems believing GOX lost 800.000 bitcoins in a couple of years because of the transaction malleability issue.

What if Gox , while it was growing in size, just like the banks decided: "We do not need to hold 100 percent of customer bitcoin in reserve, because at no time will all the customers withdraw all their bitcoin from Gox. "

and then instead of lending out customers bitcoins to others, for interest,  Gox decided to simply sell a percentage of the customer bitcoin they held in reserve huh ?

They could not lend out coins they had in reserve because the public would then immediately realize Mt. Gox was fractional reserve banking bitcoin, but if they just sold them on gox themselves pretending it was customers selling them, nobody could find out.

If Gox did this then they were fractional reserve banking bitcoin, diluting the amount of coins (IOU's from Gox) poeple believe they have, and have been driving down the price of bitcoin.

Sounds pretty plausible.

One of two things happened here: either the exchange, at some point, added BTC to their virtual currencies list (then removed it); or, the media saw "virtual currency" and jumped on the BTC news wagon.

Available evidence seems to indicate that without a doubt they did add BTC to their list of currencies sometime in mid 2013 (http://blog.firstmeta.com/announcement/new-bitcoin-to-usd-conversion) and the subsequently removed it.  Calling them a "Bitcoin Exchange" seems like a bit of a stretch at the least.

Going a little off topic but what the hell.  It's not  unknown for obvious murders to be labeled suicide in Singapore either through gross incompetence - whether the incompetence is in finding the true cause of death or putting together a believable coverup is left up to the reader to decide.

Except that First Meta isn't a bitcoin exchange.

First Meta has been around a long time dealing with Linden Dollar, and some IMVU credits stuff, but nothing on Bitcoin.

Retarded journalism and retarded news cross-posting without fact check.

I'm not sure what definition of exchange you're using, but...

I bet 95% of members here havent heard of First Meta. So you're ok....

Probably because the company she headed didn't have hardly anything to do with bitcoin and as of now is not engaged in trading it at all.
10  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: First Meta CEO found dead suspected of suicide on: March 06, 2014, 08:32:48 AM
We don't know when it occured, if it has anything to do with her Bitcoin business, if it's a suicide!

Is it even appropriate to call this a "bitcoin business"?  And it wasn't hers, investors hired her to run it.  https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=503490.0
11  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: First Meta CEO found dead suspected of suicide on: March 06, 2014, 08:29:54 AM
If she was found dead on Feb. 28th, then whats the deal with people on her facebook page writing comments as if they knew she was dead as of Feb. 26th within the shared post on Feb 10th about The Psychological Price of Entrepreneurship.

Interesting.

Could be just time differences?

12  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Autumn Radtke was NOT a "Bitcoin CEO" / "Bitcoin Exchange CEO"- what's going on? on: March 06, 2014, 08:12:51 AM
I've been reading this story about Autumn Radtke and this one is the only one that seems be even remotely honest about the whole thing: http://www.slate.com/blogs/future_tense/2014/03/05/bitcoin_ceo_suicide_not_so_fast_first_meta_s_autumn_radtke_is_dead_but_we.html (Besides the week old blog post he referenced that got no attention and stuck to the facts: [Suspicious link removed]j.com/digits/2014/02/27/american-ceo-of-singapore-startup-first-meta-dies/)

I am curious though, why has this been linked to Bitcoin at all?  As near as I can tell First Meta is primarily a site for trading online game currencies and not even a comprehensive list of them at that (where is World of Warcraft for example).  It looks like at one time they accepted Bticoin along with the gaming currencies almost as an afterthought.  I had to go all the way to their FAQ to find any reference of Bitcoin.  It doesn’t look like you can still trade in Bitcoin on First Meta at all.

Similarly her linked in profile makes no mention of Bitcoin other than that it seems to imply she attended a conference about it.

Where does this “Bitcoin Exchange CEO” even come from?

Clicking the “sell link” (https://firstmetaexchange.com/bitcoinconverter) for Bitcoin from the First Meta FAQ yields “Invalid Request”.

How do they come up with this shit?

I'd go so far to say as this company had no more to do with Bitcoin than any random company doing anything that decided to accept Bitcoin as a payment method and then later for reasons unknown decided to stop accepting it!

Is this another story of standard media incompetence or purposeful disinformation?

13  Economy / Trading Discussion / Cryptsy, the incompetence is almost comical on: December 19, 2013, 05:26:49 PM
I lost a nothing amount of coins but it's the principal that counts.  If they can loose a transaction into thin air with NO explanation that has little value couldn't they lose one with huge value?  It would seem so.  In any event, their non-responses are infuriating.

I transferred name coins into my account and they never appeared.  What's the deal?  This isn't a ton of value but how do I know the same thing wouldn't happen with 20 bitcoins?  This is alarming.

We apologize for the delay in refunds / deposits and slow trades. We implemented a more efficient audit system today but it will take some time to recover from the switch over. If your refund has has not processed within a few hours please contact us so we can look into the issue further. The long delays are only temporary until the new system catches up.

We are working hard on optimizing the trade engine and are waiting on a delivery of more hardware. We appreciate your patience while we better equip ourselves for the growing community

This is absolutely unacceptable.  There is huge volatility in these coins.  A delay of a few hours is unacceptable let alone many days. Again the point is what if I had 20 BTC in this transfer!?

Everything besides the TXID is in the ticket above.  I am not sure what the TXID is but I will see if I can find out.

This is not significant money here but it seems to me if a transaction for .1 can get lost so can one for 100.

Hello,

I am sorry to hear that you are have a negative balance after the glitch we had. Users were able to sell more coins than what they had in their wallet, and I'm 100% sure this is the case here. If you check your history with me, you will see the error.

An audit ran to take the coins given to you in error back, and if you had sold those coins and had a balance of zero, the audit put you into the negative. I have ran a final audit and found the balances to be accurate.

The solution is to sell the coins you were credited in error to make your balance zero. Some users have been locked from their accts and watched the price drop and now have to sell their coins at the current market value. Those cases will be looked at and some will be compensated like some already have been.

First you need to sell the coins so I can take the withdrawal freeze off of your acct and we will see where to go from there. Thanks for patience, and we will get this sorted out...

Please find somebody that is fluent in English and understands basic elementary school mathematics.  There is NO issue of negative balances now and there has NEVER BEEN an issue of negative balances.

There is no issue with withdrawals right now (that I know of) unless you have created a new one on your side.

The issue is a MISSING TRANSACTION:

Thanks!
15  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How many confirmations do I have to have before I can move/spend BTC? on: December 05, 2013, 10:23:00 AM
I realize that if I have a wallet with 1 BTC and I receive .5 BTC, have 2 confirmations on it, spend .5 BTC and then it turns out that transaction wasn't legit I will just end up spending .5 of my original 1 BTC.

Not really. It depends.
For any ordinary transaction (not block generation), there are inputs and outputs.
If you use your "1 BTC" as an input to create a transaction of 0.5 BTC, you will left with a 0.5 BTC change.
If you use your "0.5 BTC" as an input, and that incoming transaction has been double-spent, your 0.5 BTC outgoing transaction will never get confirmed as well, and you will left with your 1 BTC.

How do you choose which one you are spending?

Another cause for concern they are falsely claiming (as far as I can tell) to have been featured in Forbes, CNBC, New York Times and FOX News.  I can't find those articles.  Not a good sign.
18  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Lost NMC coins in transfer from btc-e.com to cryptsy on: December 04, 2013, 03:27:37 PM
I will say right up front that this was a totally insignificant amount of coins.  My problem is that if a transaction for .001 coin can disappear into thin air could one for 1, 100 or 1000 just as easily?

Anyway Last week I transferred a small amount of name coin from btc-e.com to cryptsy.  I didn't know who was responsible so I contacted both and said "Hey where is this transaction".  After a day or two cryptsy responded and then after some further back and forth they said they cannot find this transaction in the blockchain at all.   Btc-e is has ignored all inquiries.

In terms of dollar value or BTC value or whatever it's nothing to get bent out of shape over - my question is how can they be trusted with real money now?
19  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Where to sell mining hardware BESIDES ebay on: December 04, 2013, 03:17:13 PM
People can ask for any price , even 100/Gh , this doesn't mean it is actually seliling at that price.
But , you'll probably find far more customers suckers on ebay than on this forum.

Why does CEX.io have so many suckers?  They're selling even higher than Ebay.
20  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What's a sheep market scam? on: December 04, 2013, 12:58:34 PM
Underground market called Sheep Market ran away with all it's users coins, or so the theory goes.

http://www.reddit.com/r/SheepMarketplace/comments/1rvlft/i_just_chased_him_through_a_bitcoin_tumbler_and/

LOL.  And people spent money at a place called "The Sheep Market"?  It sounds like the joke was built right into the name!

I saw the reddit thread but I still didn't understand the full story.  So people pumped over 92,000 bitcoins into this fly by night "market"?

How did they pull this off?
