Surely the firmware is the openwrt file,  cgminer is the mining application.
So updating cgminer can hardly void the warranty?

mine is GBP 0.12 per unit (kWh)

Even better! Who is that from?

This machine runs at 800 watts from the wall = 8 to 10 GBP in electrcity costs per day

How am i going to make a roi if i buy this?

Your premise is incorrect.

In the UK, electricity costs about GPB 0.16 per unit (kWh), so for your miner drawing 800W, that will cost
0.8 x 24 x 0.16 = GBP 3.07 per day on a flat rate tariff, possibly less if you have an economy 7 tariff, so you will be in profit for some time.

No Buzz - All Sting

My thinking was that as people have been/are being stung in this 'industry' already we don't need any association with stings, that's why I suggested Buzz as in activity/industry, rather than Sting as in causing pain.

This keeps resellers flowing, is a good price for miners (yeah, it won't even ROI at that price, but will come *close* if BTC price jumps back up), prices them below any of the Bitfury-based miners on the market, etc.

I don't think profit is a loaded word as such, but you've hit the nail on the head perfectly, the small miners aren't expected to make much or any.

That is the trouble with this business, as I see it the miners are being ripped off, but everyone else makes their cut.

Being a small miner is just a hobby unless the hardware prices are reduced.

And this next diff increase (thanks KNC! Tongue) makes the price on these even more important

Agreed. I am doubtful that single asic usb devices will be profitable for much longer, if they are even now, due to board costs.
If the asic power consumption can be kept down perhaps two asics per usb device might be the way to go for a while longer.
If the asic's are cheap enough then (DIY) building blades would seem the way to go to get a high enough hash rate.

I can't draw, but how about a strapline:

Wasp Collective Mining: All the buzz without the sting.

Watch out though. Some of these dont even ship until later.

Good point.

Because investing in the bigger ones really worths it  Tongue Tongue
Most of them will arrive months later in the middle of a shitstorm of difficulty  Tongue

Well the price should fall to reflect that, otherwise the prospects for profit will be much reduced.

It is an arms race.

What is the best ASIC machine nowadays?

If you look at the http://mining.thegenesisblock.com/ then all the imaginary ones.

Thanks a lot, that is a very useful site.

For the first time I have been able to evaluate mining hardware properly in financial terms, and it looks like investing particularly in the smaller devices isn't worth it except for a hobby interest.

Interesting that there are a few options to really make some money, as long as the Bitcoin keeps it's value reasonably well Smiley
