1  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: WTF is going on with my GPUs (R9 290X and 6950) ? on: January 06, 2014, 10:23:31 PM
They are PCIe 2.0 ...

I've just lowered the worksize from 256 to 64 on the 6950, and it gave me a 40 kH/s boost ... that's only 285 kH/s, but it's a start since nothing else works.
2  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: WTF is going on with my GPUs (R9 290X and 6950) ? on: January 05, 2014, 09:41:47 PM
I tried older versions of cgminer, it's worse and it crashes instead of starting mining ..

I already tried to play with the worksize on the R9 (256 and 128), but I didn't see any improvement or loss in hashrate Sad

I'm lost ... could it be driver issue ? (although I'm stuck with 13.11 or 13.12 on the R9 because it's not supported by earlier drivers)

I really hope that the DOGE will go up again next week ... I still believe in this coin, and I'd really like to see it price rise again !

I forgot to mention it, but these environment variables are already set on both machines.
6  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: 500W PSU power issues with 5770 on: January 03, 2014, 02:50:57 PM
I'm sorry to inform you, but the PSU you bought is not capable of delivering 500W ... it's just another cheap and crappy PSU (like Heden, Advance, LCpower and such) which can be dangerous ...

Here is a word about your PSU : http://www.expertreviews.co.uk/psus/118103/sumvision-power-x-500w
Today, no serious manufacturer will sell (real) 500W PSUs without a PCIe connector ... 600/650W will come with two connectors, 700/800W with four, 1000W with six ...

You can find a few reviews with load test of such PSUs, and that's quite terrible ...

Never neglect PSUs, they are the most important piece of your computer. Never try to save money on it, and always go for well known brands (Corsair, Antec, Seasonic, Fortron, ...). The extra bucks spent on them might save you many more if your components (or even house) gets damaged by a crappy cheaper PSU !
7  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: 24/7 mining: how long will the hardware last? on: January 03, 2014, 02:36:05 PM
I have some old 9800GTX+ running H24 since their release ... they are still doing fine. (not mining, Folding)

But some older NV hardware (like the 4* 8800 GTS 512 MB I had) weren't as robust and all died ...

On the AMD side, the only card that failed at me were a 4870 (fan died and got it replaced during warranty) and a 4850 (died because of high OC with volt mod). All other cards I had have been replaced, but the 3870 was still doing fine at a friend a year ago, and another friend is still playing with the 5770 I sold to him.

If you don't push your hardware too hard (indecent overclocking / overvolting) and have a well sized PSU, everything should be fine for years, but of course, you can still have a few problems with flawed pieces of hardware, it happens.

edit : oh and I forgot, always make sure that your air filters are clean, and don't forget to clean your heatsinks and fans periodically.

This doesn't look like European since traceroutes to their servers end in an Amazon datacenter in California ... Undecided
9  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / WTF is going on with my GPUs (R9 290X and 6950) ? on: January 03, 2014, 01:58:52 PM
Hi everyone.

I've finally decided to post here, because I've been fighting for days with my GPUs trying to tune them to get decent hashrates (or at least something that looks like what I could find from various sources like https://litecoin.info/Mining_hardware_comparison or https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=117221.0 ) and miserably failed. So I need some advices from more experimented miners ...

I have two machines, both are running quite similar software setup : Win7 64 bits, Catalyst 13.12 drivers and cgminer 3.7.2.

First system has a HD6950 with reactivated shaders (so 1536 SP like in a 6970) clocked at 840/1250. This is the system I have experimented the most with settings and my current cgminer command looks like this : --intensity 12 -g 1 --thread-concurrency 4032
This setup shows about 240 kH/s according to cgminer.

The problem is that I can't get any close to the recommended settings of 4*SP count for thread concurrency (6144) or to what I can find on the page linked above (between 6144 and 8192). If I set anything higher than 4032, cgminer will refuse to start with a -4 error.

I have the same problem with intensity setting : at intensity 12, I get a few HW errors (I get none at intenisty 10), but I won't be able to set anything like those found in examples (instensities up to 18 or 19).

What am I doing wrong ? Huh

Are people reporting higher hashrates (in the 450's) with aggressive setting only lying about their parameters, and are only doing so to report big numbers, but with nothing productive (tons of HW errors and no valid work accepted) ?

The same questions and situation apply to my other machine with a R9 290X (allowing +50% of power draw and fan up to 100%). I'm only able to use these settings : --intensity 14 -g 1 --thread-concurrency 16384 which produce 635 kH/s ...
This is quite far from the numbers I found (intensity 18-20, thread concurrency between 24000 and 32768 which should give hashreate in the 800's).

Any thoughts or advice are welcome.

And there's ony a few buy offers on CoinEx ... I don't feel very weel about the future of Mooncoin if nothing more is done to promote it Sad
11  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: We have Subforums! on: January 02, 2014, 05:26:34 PM
Great news for the new year !

And for the OP question, I'd put the pool announcements in the Announcement subforum which could use two tag : [COIN] [TRI] for coin announcements (where TRI stands for the coin trigram) and [POOL] [TRI] for pool announcements (where TRI stands for the coin the poll will mine, and could be replaced by [MULTI] if the pool offers multiple currencies).

What do you think about this naming conventions ?
