3  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Tell me how to mine :) on: June 15, 2014, 06:21:53 PM
You've got 3 options these days:

1) Buy a selection of coins and hold onto them long term / trade coins
2) Spend a load of money on ASICs, do some research into promising coins and mine then (Scrypt coins)
3) Get some nVidia 750Ti cards and mine X11 / X13 coins. Good hashrate against low power consumption.

All 3 are potentially a risk. It depends on whether you have the funds, personally I've done all 3 and have varying returns.
4  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Bounty - Help w/ 5 R9 290 rig on: June 12, 2014, 10:53:22 AM
I forgot about this thread for a bit.

Anyhoo - I found out that I have to connect a total of 3 power connectors to my GPUs; 8 pin, 6 pin, and the molex riser. Funny enough I can actually use unpowered risers - just as long as I have those 14 pins connected. Hope this help others.

Hi Cris - glad you got it working. Have to admit it took lots of hair pulling to get there...

I forgot about the thread as well, only realised when I checked my notifications.

dazza12 please post your addy. You gave me the idea of attaching the additional 6 pins.

My addy is 1CA4a9dfgbYhW3qc48CJbitBxDTUT3wNgx (BT- if any other is easier let me know).
5  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Looking to get a Fury ASIC in the UK on: June 07, 2014, 12:53:24 PM
As the title says, I'm in the UK and I'm looking to purchase one or more Fury devices. I've asked Gawminers questions over the last week without any response (slightly concerning) so I thought I'd ask here to see if anybody has any answers.

Are there any UK distributors for the Fury?

What's the shipping time to the UK for the Fury once shipped (looking to buy Week 4).

I've also read on here that a free controller has been provided. Is this still the case? Can't see anything on their website.

6  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] cudaMiner & ccMiner CUDA based mining applications [Windows/Linux/MacOSX] on: May 30, 2014, 07:06:08 AM

What are you mining to get that return? The best day I've had is around £6, most days it's about £3.

about 60 mh/s on x11 with 750 TIs?  Just a guess

Wrong, 3 750Tis on jackpot. Made 0.05btc last night

Thanks bigjme, I'll look into that. I've got 6 750Ti cards so I'll have a go at pointing them to jackpot a little later.

not the only one, £28 in 3 days, for £2 in electric Wink

8  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: how many watts does this rig take? on: May 28, 2014, 07:07:12 PM
I might have misunderstood - are you looking at an AMD rig compared to an nVidia rig or them both combined? Looking at the last response I'm not sure if I understood what route you're looking into.

On my own setup I have used a Corsair RM650. It's a fairly strong power supply, is Gold rated and has enough even if I choose to overclock my cards. On my AMD rig I've got a RM1200.

If you're looking to run all the cards - nVidia and AMD cards, I'd suggest separating them out into two rigs. Two lower rated power supplies are cheaper than 1 high rated supply. It gives you a bit of resilience and gives you a few options if you wanted to take one rig in a different direction or mine two different coins at a time.
9  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: how many watts does this rig take? on: May 28, 2014, 05:39:33 PM
Not sure about the AMD cards (I believe there's a chart out there somewhere) but the 750Ti power draw is around 35-55 watts per card. X11 runs at a lower rate, lower temp and lower power draw, so you're looking towards the bottom end of that power range.

Depending on the other components in your setup I'd recommend a 650W PSU if you went down the nVidia route

Just a thought regarding the black screen.

Is there any chance one of the other cards have become the 'primary' card? Next time you get a black screen try swapping the DVI connection to one of the others.
11  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Bounty - Help w/ 5 R9 290 rig on: May 11, 2014, 11:00:10 PM
As mentioned above, BAMT (or SMOS) is worth a try. Download it, install to a usb stick and boot the PC from the stick.

If all cards work, then you know the hardware is fine and it's then worth exploring software options (driver, OS etc).

If it doesn't work, then you know it's hardware - most likely the risers.

Regarding Windows 8, bear in mind you can download 8.1, install and use for a period of time without a key. This will give you enough time to confirm whether it's working or not.
12  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Bounty - Help w/ 5 R9 290 rig on: May 11, 2014, 10:43:03 PM
Normally shouldn't happen if all 5 cards are the same - Windows uses the same driver files as the other cards. If the correct driver is installed for card 1 and 2, then subsequent cards should install correctly.

Just a thought - are all of the cards identical, or are some different models or configs (memory, brand etc.), despite being the same GPU?

EDIT - just seen your response, didn't realise the standard VGA description was happening with the first card. Install the drivers and try again.
13  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Bounty - Help w/ 5 R9 290 rig on: May 11, 2014, 10:29:44 PM
Device Manager says Standard VGA Graphics Adapter. The kicker is these cards are DVI-D only.

It will always see a video card as a VGA device - it means that Windows has identified the class of device, but hasn't got any further than that.

It does sound like there's enough power or enough pins alive on the riser to identify the class of device, but it's likely that anything else and it's failing. It's ticking boxes for power or riser (or the powered part of the riser isn't working). Sounds like your card and mobo are fine.
14  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Bounty - Help w/ 5 R9 290 rig on: May 11, 2014, 10:25:06 PM
Sounds like it's getting some power (fans spinning), but probably not enough.

EDIT - just seen your reply. I've got the same power supply on one rig. It's still possible this might be an issue with power to the risers. Although it's working on one card there may still be one of the others that may be drawing slightly less than it needs to.

As an example, on a recent install I had 6 cards. One would stubbornly not work. If I swapped the card out the card that was in it's place also didn't work, so it looked like it was the riser. I swapped the riser - still the same problem. I then swapped the riser for another design (was using USB, switched to one non-USB) and it's now working absolutely fine. Normal fault finding wouldn't have found it, it's only by luck I had a pile of older risers to hand.
15  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Bounty - Help w/ 5 R9 290 rig on: May 11, 2014, 09:28:42 PM
Will your BIOS let you set the Gen of the PCI slots? If so, set them to Gen2, rather than Gen1 or Gen3.

Failing that, do you know which cards aren't working? Are they connected to the 1x slots?
16  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: I dont know what to do regarding my RIG on: May 11, 2014, 11:55:40 AM
Yes, but if you're talking about running costs, you're using around a 5th of the power of the AMD rig.

Did the same calculation myself about 6 weeks ago when I was looking to supplement my existing rigs. I had a choice of buying 6 750Ti's pulling 350W max, on a 650W power supply. Maximum cost for me £1000 (about $1500). For the R9 290x I was looking to duplicate what I had for my existing 290x rig. Two 1300W power supplies and a total cost of £2-2500 (about $4000). Total current draw 2200W. I'm paying for my electricity so it's a no brainer.

The point isn't necessarily high hashrate, it's to lower the associated costs you have to get that hashrate. As an example, there's no point having 3000 kHash if you make very little, or worse, a loss when you get that rate. These days with the pending growth in the use of ASICs it's better to look at the return for the investment you're putting in. If that takes 3 rigs, then so be it.

17  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: I dont know what to do regarding my RIG on: May 11, 2014, 10:35:54 AM
As you mention the Gridseeds are limited to what they can work on.

In terms of running costs they're probably the best way to go, but if you're looking to work on other algos, you're still looking at quite a running cost for the 290x's.

For a better running cost (for GPUs) have you considered the nVidia 750Ti's? The hashrate for these cards is lower, but the comparable return for the power they draw is far better - in the long run you've got a better chance of ROI.
18  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: 5 GPU rig problem on: May 10, 2014, 05:50:33 PM
BAMT / SMOS is a full distribution running off a memory stick.

The point is, it's a quick way of checking if the suspect card is working. Without confirming this you'll be going round in circles trying to get something to work that may never work. Within 15 or so minutes you'll know either way. Rule out a hardware issue first and you're confident it's software.

There's going to be no easy way of confirming this under Windows, unless you remove all your cards and try them individually.
19  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: 5 GPU rig problem on: May 10, 2014, 03:21:55 PM
Has it ever worked?

Code 43 errors are where the device just refuses to work and doesn't return an error code so Windows makes an assumption that it's not working and disables the card.

There are a number of reasons why this may be so, but the two most likely are that the card has died, or alternatively there's not enough power for all the cards to run. This doesn't necessarily mean your PSU isn't up to the job, but it may be you're drawing too much from one rail - rearranging your cabling may help.

One way to check if it's OS/driver or hardware is to download BAMT or SMOS, run this and see if all the cards work fine - if it does then you know all the cards are working.
20  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Newbee with a new minrig, black screen (wont start up) on: April 25, 2014, 01:36:25 PM
Do you have power to the cards themselves (normally a 6 or 8 pin connector but may be molex).

I've got the same board, but different GPUs, it was a bit tricky to get up until I made sure I'd routed power properly.
