1  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: bit pit - ~85 GH/s (LP, Prop, SSL, API, 0% fee, Almost 0% Stales!) on: July 18, 2011, 09:42:38 PM
Does the leaderboard display the shares for every miner in the pool? If so, that may be another source from which to find "Current Shares in Round".

(Unless, of course, you're already subtly modifying this. You could even only display non-anonymous users' shares, and give an artificially deflated "Current Shares" value, perhaps causing hoppers to help the pool for longer.  Tongue)

I've been pressing my button to toggle the luck switch but I swear it's not working.  I guess those guys didn't install the switch properly!  I'll have to drive there myself to flip it >_<

I think I've found the problem.

3  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Ubuntu Natty Narwhal 11.04 Mining Guide / HOWTO on: June 23, 2011, 02:20:40 AM
This guide is great; I've now set up two rigs (one for me, one for a friend) using it.

I've noticed some have been asking about how to get AMDOverdriveCtrl working with this guide; here's what I did, after following every last step in this guide, including the final reboot:

  • Download the appropriate .deb file for your architecture (i386 for 32-bit, amd64 for 64-bit) from their SourceForge page (latest version at this time is 1.2.1): AMDOverdriveCtrl SourceForge Files Page
  • Install using the .deb file; by default the Ubuntu Software Center will open when you double-click the .deb.
  • You can run the software at a terminal by using "AMDOverdriveCtrl -i #", replacing '#' with the index of the GPU you wish to view info on. You can get these by running "AMDOverdriveCtrl -h"; it'll likely show more than one index per GPU. (For my 5830s, I use indexes 0 and 3 to access the first and second card.) You'll need to run one instance of the software per GPU installed.
  • Optionally, I like to setup a few launchers on the Desktop to make it easier to bring the software up. (Right-click on desktop, "Create Launcher...", give it a descriptive name and use "AMDOverdriveCtrl -i #" as the command.) You could also add these commands to the Startup Applications ('System'->'Preferences'->'Startup Applications') to make it even easier.

You can save overclocking settings by using the 'Save default' button on the 'Overdrive' tab, and it'll use those settings every time you start the software. The downside is, it'll use those same settings for every instance of the software, so if, for example, you wanted to set up different clocks for different cards, you'd have to manually load a profile each time you start the software.
The default settings file is pretty easy to edit by hand, should one be so inclined; It is located at '~/.AMDOverdriveCtrl/default.ovdr'.

Hopefully this helps some people. Smiley
4  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What mtgox number are you? (from DB leak) on: June 19, 2011, 08:45:22 PM
1169, who's got lower than that?

(The answer is, "1168 people have a lower account number than that.")

Posting to confirm that I received my cards safely and quickly. This was an excellent transaction. Thanks again, sir.  Smiley

My UPS guy got here yesterday, but it came with bad news.

Pulled my shiny new Radeon out of the box, opened my case, and slammed that puppy home. Then I went to hook up the pci-e power to it and IT WASN'T THERE! Crappy Dell had no connection for pci-e power and I didn't think to look before hand  Angry  Found a nice replacement that will fit my box but now I need to come up with another $75 for it  Sad In the meantime I'm mining with a Nvidia 210 which is so slow that I'd probably do better mining with a slide rule  Grin

No luck with 4-pin molex -> 6-pin PCIe adapters? That sucks, I feel for you man. There's very little worse-feeling than coming to the end of a project and getting waylaid by some small, seemingly meaningless detail that was nevertheless overlooked.
7  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: 5770 vs 5830 on: June 16, 2011, 05:58:13 PM
It seems like currently, even if the 5770 is more efficient in Mhash/w terms, the profitability of mining relative to electricity costs makes it so that the 5830 is a better choice overall, as the increased hashrate will more than pay for the increased electricity usage; the scenarios where this isn't true are if your electricity is vastly more expensive, or in the future when mining difficulty has increased enough to compensate for the relative cheapness of electricity in the context of mining rigs.
(Someone could, and probably has, thrown together a graph comparing power consumption with hashrate, showing the electricity price point at which power efficiency trumps raw hashing capability.)

Obviously, other factors come into play when choosing a GPU; in this case, namely, availability. 5830s can still be found if you search for a while, but never[1] as cheaply as they were a week ago at Newegg, which degrades their previous "obvious great GPU choice" status somewhat.

1. If you have an example showing otherwise, let me know! Smiley

Your site has a pretty slick aesthetic, I have to say.

Hello all. Initially started checking out Bitcoin about a year ago, CPU-mined off and on for a few weeks, then promptly forgot about it entirely. Fast-forward to a few months ago, whereupon checking out the going USD/BTC rate, I decided to jump back in the game. Now mining at around 300Mhash/s with a shiny new 5830, I'm getting ready to throw together a new rig. Should be fun.

Started mining off and on about a year ago, back when CPUs were actually still useful.
Currently mining at ~300Mhash/s with a 5830, and planning on throwing together another rig soonish.
