just bought 3 x 6990's(2000 MH/s) to start mining(haven't set it up yet), I think im too late tho' I just calculated with the difficulty increase it is going to take awhile to break even on the 3 cards .... plus of cause electricity costs. I would suggest to buy bitcoins instead of buying equipment for mining...

That's been said for a while now but no one takes it seriously, thus the large difficulty increase.

It seems like there would be an incentive for current miners to discourage new miners in order to slow down difficulty increases so I take all the doom and gloom predictions with a grain of salt

Actually if you take it as a "Fact" you will be a lot better off... doesn't take much to find these stats out your self....

as a matter of fact you stated a "Fact" your self with the difficulty increasing, Saying that it is still making a profit for those who have already broke even with there equipment investment, but new people buying equipment... well its a fact that it wont make you quick money and should pray that the value doesn't drop. Also it has been noted many times this spike is just a bubble... at the end of the day there wont be less miners so the difficulty will stay the same or increase, but it will never drop, I don't see why current miners who have paid there investment would want to stop(decrease the difficulty) while they are still making a slight profit after power expenses. As for buying bit coins.. If your a gambler and feel lucky then go ahead and buy them, it will make your more money than mining..

Started mining off and on about a year ago, back when CPUs were actually still useful.
Currently mining at ~300Mhash/s with a 5830, and planning on throwing together another rig soonish.

Was mining back in spring 2010, got 100 coins over a week with default CPU miner, eventually abandoned this as a waste of time...
Not the smartest decision, considering that i work at a place where i could easily get access to superclusters.
Well, you can't turn hindsight around.

Started mining yesterday at about 720 mhs. Seems like it's going at about a little better than a coin a day when I'm pool mining. Just doing it as a hobby, I'll be happy if it pays off the 2 6970's I bought. That would be a sweet bonus.

I hear you there man. I have a GTX 460 that I am getting 80Mh/s out of and a 8800 GTX that is only getting about 29Mh/s.

I ordered a 6950 for $209.99, but it wouldn't boot into Windows or Linux, I RMA'd that and it should arrive back to Newegg.com tomorrow so I am looking to get my replacement by Wednesday next week.
I also ordered a 5830 for $109.99 from Newegg.com when they were in stock, I got lucky. That one will arrive today! I am so excited. This one will replace the 8800 GTX.
I'm getting a used computer for free tomorrow from a friend that runs a computer shop which is where the 6950 will go.
I won't be replacing the GTX 460 because it is my main computer which I also use for gaming.

Then I will go from 110Mh/s combined to about 650-700Mh/s combined.

Ive been mining for about a week now properly.
Its kinda interesting to me and it is a safe way for me to learn a bit about market trading ect as I have always been interested in trading on the real world markets.
who knows, one day maybe I will be a stock broker

My UPS guy got here yesterday, but it came with bad news.

Pulled my shiny new Radeon out of the box, opened my case, and slammed that puppy home. Then I went to hook up the pci-e power to it and IT WASN'T THERE! Crappy Dell had no connection for pci-e power and I didn't think to look before hand    Found a nice replacement that will fit my box but now I need to come up with another $75 for it  In the meantime I'm mining with a Nvidia 210 which is so slow that I'd probably do better mining with a slide rule

I'm using a collection of older motherboards and video cards for mining.

I've found that my ati 4850 needs additional cooling so I bought a artic cooling vga cooler to tame it. It was running at 108 C on the the stock cooler.

No luck with 4-pin molex -> 6-pin PCIe adapters? That sucks, I feel for you man. There's very little worse-feeling than coming to the end of a project and getting waylaid by some small, seemingly meaningless detail that was nevertheless overlooked.
