Is there really any need to go through all that just for a deleted post that simply wouldn't be brought back, this is a rather frequent issue in here and every member of this forum has experienced(post being deleted)
OP can forget about the deleted post, and move on, you'll get one or two more deleted posts in the future,so learn to handle it

Yes! that's true, Marshall. I don't really care if it comes back or not. I just want to get something clear to avoid future issues like this.
Thank you

Thank you, DdmrDdmr. Here's the post just the way I sent it below.

Thanks for sharing the guide... This is new to me and I am glad I learned it from here. Better to take some time figuring out how to be secure than being sorry.
Yesterday I just did a google search on how people claim forks especially the recent Bitcoin Cash Forks and realized how so many people are vulnerable to getting hacked.

Incidents have been there where fake websites claiming to be official sites while offering fake wallets for download pop up out of nowhere. sometimes someone claiming to give a guide of how o claim the coins give a link to a fake wallet/fake website. Hopefully, will people get sensitized about such dirty tricks.

I am glad that you learnt something new. I do understand that some security measures may seem painstaking and one might be tempted to think that he/she is hack-proof as I normally think of myself sometimes Grin but i don't know what lies ahead so its better I take the pains for something than lose all my gains for nothing.

An example of proper quoting:

In any case, the problem of off-topic replies is really more a reflection on the forum's lack of threading than any fault of the users.

I agree, but since the forum doesn't yet support threading, it's necessary to enforce on-topicness to keep the forum usable.

Substantial off-topic replies are usually split.

Just read and learn. And possibly you won't need to complain after some time, if you are a leaner.

I really would have loved to send the link to the message in question but I also deleted the message from my inbox.
I actually used the direct format as shown above and for the one you stated I messed things up, that message, just like this one is, was meant to be in the same context as the specific ones above it. That shouldn't call for an off-topic reply. A threading feature like Slack's would be good for this forum but its currently unsupported.
If there was a better way of handling message contexts on this forum, I'd love to know.
4  Other / Meta / Re: Deleted posts on: December 18, 2018, 11:45:34 AM
As far as I know, there is no rule against quoting someone else's post into your reply, it is a feature made available by the forum and it's used by multiple members.
It's possible your reply was off topic ot it had already been made by another member.
If you provide a copy of it, that would help to decide.

So what happened is I gave a recommendation
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5080741.msg48654587#msg48654587
 and someone replied, quoting
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5080741.msg48671930#msg48671930
thanking me for the post that he learnt something new.

and then I quoted the reply also appreciating the person as is normal culture  Wink
[deleted]

But alas! the next day, my post was deleted. That should be the 5th time or so my posts gets deleted in the Tech support thread and I really wonder what the moderator is really up to.

What is wrong with showing appreciation and what in God's name happened to free speech!?

This might be off-topic but I just want to understand why maybe i'm doing something wrong.  Embarrassed
Whenever I quote a person's post in a reply, it gets deleted and there are no rules that states this section's guidelines.

It’s global forum rules from the meta section.
Just because there’s no board specific rules, doesnt mean we’re without any.

This is off topic, you should’ve put it in meta.
Actually, I should have but I wanted it to be in the technical support thread where I was in discussion with some members because it is only there that I have been facing this problem.

7  Other / Off-topic / Re: Italian Football Club Purchased with Cryptocurrency! on: December 14, 2018, 07:10:19 PM
Like seriously, I don't want to believe this.
But its good to see that football is already starting at adopt cryptocurrency.
Blockchain actually has potentials to disrupt the way football is being managed currently through the use of smart contracts.
An example is if a manager has to be paid a Y amount of tokens for winning X number of games.

Andreas Antonopoulos' "Internet of Money" is a decent read. I heard about him on Joe Rogan's Podcast a couple years ago and gave it a shot. Smiley
Actually, Andreas' posts are quite good for beginners to follow. I got his book "Mastering Bitcoin". I learnt quite a lot!!
9  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Is it okay to trade on telegram? on: December 14, 2018, 05:13:04 PM
If what you mean by trading on Telegram is what I think you mean which is peer-to-peer exchanging of coins, then i wouldn't advise anyone to do that.
You better use the popular exchanges like Paxful to trade.

But if you actually meaning buy/sell speculation trade like its done on Binance, then Telegram isn't a bad platform to do such as long as you are using a legitimate service. This, I wouldn't advise beginners to do but only traders that have done their homework and are comfortable using custom tools like bots to trade.
10  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Who wants to use Bitcoin? on: December 14, 2018, 02:50:25 AM
When we geeks on this platform that fully understand the bitcoin ecosystem invest a considerable amount of time to educate and make understanding bitcoin easier (Eli5  Grin) for the non-technical masses out there, we will see a massive adoption and bitcoin; blockchain generally will flourish.

A lot of people hop on this train just because of its perceived immediate monetary benefits without fully understanding how it functions.
(I was actually pissed when I learnt my mom, motivated by profits, invested in an altcoin that later folded up not long ago) and so when the train hits a little bump, almost everyone gets scared and jump out.
This issue of seeking only profits is what causes people, like my mum  Cheesy, to get exploited by all the shitty ICO scams we have today and it gives Bitcoin generally a bad reputation. Hence, a lot of people would rather spend fiat than adopt cryptocurrency.

11  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: I GOT HACKED AND LOST 1 MILLION on: December 14, 2018, 12:56:59 AM
Going through the previous comments especially that of npole, I now understand that the attacker(s) used some really good obfuscation techniques to bypass detection systems.
I also believe that the attacker got a legit version of the Electrum BCD wallet and then modified it to contain his malicious payload.

I think a good prevention mechanism everyone should note is how to do data verification. In other words, I mean verification of MD5, SHA-1 and SHA-256 hashes. Its some cryptography stuffs!

So for an example, if Electrum releases a new version of software, they also release the checksum, which are random strings of text. Now, If I download that new release and I want to ensure file integrity, I run a hash function against that file and compare the result to what was shown on the official website; if they match, I then know that it is legit. If not, I know that it has been tampered with.

Its kind of what I think is best practice for critical systems such as where you store your financial data.

There's no way both the legit Electrum and modded Electrum's checksum can be the same except if you were MITM'ed whilst visiting a non-https site.

A way to do this on Windows:
Open up Powershell and use the command:

default is SHA-256
Code:
Get-FileHash C:\path\to\file.exe

To specify the hashing algorithm, (based on the official site's specification)
Code:
Get-FileHash C:\path\to\file.exe -Algorithm MD5
Code:
Get-FileHash C:\path\to\file.exe -Algorithm SHA1
Code:
Get-FileHash C:\path\to\file.exe -Algorithm SHA256

and then compare the result to the hash the official site released.

Linux users: (Any of the three depending on which you want to view)
Code:
md5sum /path/to/file
Code:
sha1sum /path/to/file
Code:
sha256sum /path/to/file

Stay safe, all.

I really do not want to believe there are bots on this forum.  Shocked
Thinking of it; whomever must have built them must have really put in much work to it.
I am a dev and the thought of building a bot to navigate this forum really scares me.  Grin
14  Other / Meta / Re: Evil IP and deleted posts by mods. on: December 07, 2018, 10:01:54 PM
The idea of evil IPs and paid memberships is already enough. I wonder why you think deleted posts should attract a fee; not that its a bad idea but a ban should be sufficient after being warned severally about your off-topic posts
15  Other / Meta / Re: Do not post off-topic replies on: December 07, 2018, 10:37:07 AM
Just to give you an example. There is a new blockchain project that tries to solve the problem with the scalability.
I said that I think that scalability is the biggest problem of nowadays blockchain and I hope that the project can solve it.

The post was deleted because it was off-topic?
This is just BS.

An off-topic reply can be just one of many reasons for why a moderator deleted your post. It's possible that someone reported your reply as low quality since most of your posts are bounty related. Or maybe someone found your post to be inaccurate because scalability is already being addressed by so many different projects now so it's not that much of a problem today.

I am really angry atm and I think to boycott this crappy forum in the future. This is censorship at it's best.

Either way, i respect what the moderators are trying to do with new rules and trying to reduce spam. I've had posts deleted as well but do you see me getting angry? Anyway, if you want to leave you're more than welcome to do so but just keep in mind this forum is moderated and it's a privilege to be a member. So they can delete any post that doesn't belong here because they want the forum to remain useful for many years to come.

A post can be deleted but you should be warned first, I suggest.

Picture this,
JakElips is a newbie on this forum but has been a blockchain enthusiast for a while and he identifies a problem that needs addressing; now he mightn't know that scalability is already being discussed somewhere else. [the way this forum is designed makes some topics and i don't mean boards uneasy to find]
So he thinks that his project has some potentials and then talks about it on a thread trying to get people to share what they think.
If a mod already knows that it has been discussed somewhere else, why not make it known in a reply or something so that JakElips and a few others that we should assume have never given scalability a thought can have a chance to explore. It could be possible that JakElips could take a cue or two from there to improve on his own project.
It shouldn't just get deleted without warning; think of the number of users that could have either learnt something or contribute their own knowledge to the post that got deleted.  Not everyone has intentions to scam!
16  Other / Meta / Re: Do not post off-topic replies on: December 07, 2018, 10:03:20 AM
Honestly, most times I really do not understand the rules in this forum; it always seems like a dictatorship to me.
Maybe because I am a newbie is why my voice and thoughts do not seem relevant to the bitcoin community.

I usually spend time on the technical discussions because I love technical topics; most time if I reply to or quote someone's posts, the moderator achow101 or gmaxwell, i do not know who usually does that will just delete my post without warning.  I try not to advertise or insult anyone and i always make sure that my posts are never off but it just gets deleted. This really discourages me from posting or even sharing my thoughts and you guys know how that looks on my badge profile.  Cry

A list of official rules should be made and pinned somewhere where everyone at the index page could see and refer to.

Another thing, if a newbie quotes a higher-rank member's quotes that contains links, it really looks bad to see "suspicious link removed" meanwhile you just quoted someone else on the same board.

I believe we are all here to add value in own our little ways; blockchain has big potentials for the world. I come from a place where access to computers isn't luxury and I and a few others are trying to see how we can utilise technology to improve lives around here. If this forum has such strict procedures, I wonder what we are actually trying to achieve.

Mods, please take note. Thanks!!

Maybe Lithuania is a safe haven for these kind of guys. I believed Cherry Servers should have at least tried to render some help. It is more reason why they have an abuse contact.
The length of time it would take to get their local judiciary system involved is enough time for the hackers to cover their tracks if they are as smart as I think.
I pinged their IP today; there's a response. I guess they are still online!
18  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: I GOT HACKED AND LOST 1 MILLION on: December 06, 2018, 02:25:50 AM
You have to send an email detailing the whole issue to their abuse contact gotten from the domaintools search and maybe if they're reliable, they will try and help you out.
19  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: I GOT HACKED AND LOST 1 MILLION on: December 06, 2018, 02:08:29 AM
I did a look up. That IP originates from Lithuania; the ISP is UAB Cherry Servers with Azure configured as the name server and Cherry Servers are providers of Cloud Hosting Services so the hacker(s) definitely used a VPS to conduct this attack. I do not think this attack could be one guy but a well organized group. Why I think so is because from Cherry Servers pricing page, their services are quite expensive and I am not sure someone other than a well connected group could afford it.

I also tried pinging but no response but
Code:
nmap -sV -Pn 46.166.160.158
reports open ports 3389: ms-wbt-server and 7070: ssl/realserver which confirms that the attacker is running a Windows OS and uses RDP for his trade.

I tried connecting to the IP over my Windows RDP software and there's a response showing that the system is still online but without login creds, i can't do much. Maybe someone with advanced pentesting skills could take it up from here let's put an end to all these criminality.
