but I'm a poor college kid

You're in a good position in you live in the dorms or know someone that lives in the dorms. You could have something (with grant money?) running 24/7 and not worry about electricity. And I doubt you crazy college kids would care about extra noise and heat.

Your other option is to try to find a low-difficulty CPU coin.

Any recommendations?

Being a newbie and getting in late on the mining game, I believe the next step would be to invest in mining companies. But, I don't know anything about them. Can someone explain how it works and how to start investing? I know there are the Securities and Mining boards, but I don't want to approach those yet. Also figured there may be some people in this board that are interested in investing too.

too late on the mining game? Why it is so? So now minig is no more profitable or something

Mining can be profitable, but you need to invest $$ to compete with a fraction of what the latest hardware can do. At least from what I'm reading on the forums. Setting up a GPU farm would be out of the question (electricity, noise, and heat).

I'm thinking that as the months and years go by, the hardware will be limited by the difficulty. The only ones left that have any real resources to turn a profit from mining would be the mining companies and the mining hardware companies.

The Genesis Block's calculator does allow you to factor in changes in $/BTC conversion per month in case you sell your mined BTC immediately. Look for Conversion Increase / Month (%) under Conversion and Electricity

Don't focus on price, volatility really doesn't matter when you're holding everything you mine until you're ready to sell.  Probably the only price movement you should really care about would be moving averages just to see where the trend line is heading.  Then pick a target along that trend to sell on.

A good calc should really only care about forecasting trends in hash rate so you can see what your potential earnings will be in terms of BTC.

Yes, that makes sense. I wouldn't want to sell immediately.

Thanks for posting this. I'm doing something similar. I got my Pi yesterday and getting a few more components this week. Just waiting for my BTC to clear (hopefully by tomorrow) before buying some USB ASICs. I don't know if I should wait for Antminer U2 to become available.

I know that the price of BTC is volatile, but is there a calc the factors in the the rate of increase in price of BTC.

Hi there!

I joined this forum because I'm interested in buying BTC and doing a bit of mining. I was interested a few years back, but fell off the wagon. Seems like I feel pretty hard. Lol.  Grin Now I'm back and ready to invest.  Smiley

Great advice. I didn't know if it was worth it too. Glad to see the community is still for it. I'm starting out too and want to do a combination of both buying and mining. USB ASICs look like a good starting point, at least for me.
