1  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: rpietila Altcoin Observer on: July 26, 2014, 06:57:26 AM
I don't think anyone in this thread actually believes monero could overtake bitcoins mainstream adoption, EVER.

Now that said, blockchain bloat can be an issue but lets take this into perspective with the quote above.

If bitcoin is the actual threat to the current banking industry we could view monero as the offshore banking currency to bitcoin.

I wonder how many people here have actually used offshore/swiss banking? Fees are much greater than traditional US/EU banking and people accept them on a daily basis because the offshore banking provides them whatever service they require.

Offshore banking in general is much riskier than traditional banking aswell. Anyone with the slightest experience in any type of offshore banking will confirm this in a split second.

Now my point being, whether it is Monero (likely at this point in time due to its tech) or another crypto down the line, blockchain bloat will be the least of the intended target audiences worries. These are the same people you are targeting who pay much higher fees in the real world for these services and a bigger blockchain is in reality a joke in comparaison.

Sometimes we step too far away from the real world problems that can be solved and dwell too much on smaller technical issues that are definatly acceptable in some situations in regards to the solutions they offer.

What makes you think bitcoin will achieve mainstream adoption? Because someone told you it's gonna be worth a lot some day? Because someone said it's gonna be on some real markets soon? Really, the logic here is that because bitcoin has shown progress, it will be adopted by the entire world. Well cryptonote now has a coin with its own exchangemarket, GUI wallets, and is showing favorable responses. Your logic doesn't make sense that there's zero chance it can be adopted ever than by a couple thousand people .. as by your definition there are people telling you it's gonna be worth a lot some day, and there's actual progress.

So you're worried about bloat? Have you forgotten about lightweight wallets? What about other ways to mitigate the size of the blockchain, that you don't know about? These are all impossible to fix in the future, just because at one point in the past the data took up a lot of space? You really think the intended target audience is only people that want a personal swiss bank account? I hope you realize it could be much more as well.

Or are you trying to make the point that because the technology seems clunky right this moment in time only three months after discovery you'd use it as a swiss bank account? That's a large thing to say about something that's only three months old .. you must have a lot of faith in this to want to use CN as something like a swiss bank account.

#1 Too much VC money, infrastructure and first mover advantage for xmr to compete head on with btc. Besides if BTC is facing the upcoming regulations and various government pressures while not being anonymous the same would apply to xmr in a exponential way.

#2/3 I dont think you understood, or i wasnt clear enough, the tradeoffs in the blockchain size (or clunkyness as you refer to) at the moment are a joke of a price to pay for the advantages monero offers.

The technology as you stated is very new and will get better I have no doubts, but i reference what it is at the time of my posts.

I am quite a large holder of XMR, to the tune of 25-30% of my btc holdings and it is the only other coin i hold so don't take this as FUD etc...so yes i do have faith in it.

That said, this is just my opinion. There's no rule or law that says you can't do this. But if the US starts to regulate cryptocurrency as real currencies, I'm positive they will view this action as illegal. Right now, developers can claim that they are working on software and not creating money and that the money is creation is decentralized. Once you start making monetary policy decisions with your coin, you can no longer make that claim.

I wonder what the legal ramifications are from the actions of the devs and how vericoin could now be categorized, because it definatly is not P2P .

food for thought, sounds more like a HYIP.

would be interesting to know how many of the 8m coins were owned by the devs and early adopters, smart money says 50%+

Wow, Patrick, you really did it. You did a rollback of the blockchain and wrote history with it. Everyone with knowledge about cryptos knows that their were a couple of other options to save the coin (e.g. removing the stolen coins from the supply), but you chose to bail out mintpal. You even were offered support for fixing the issue in a reasonable way, but still you used your honorable achieved credibility to break a fundamental rule. Its a sad day in crypto, especially since this wasn't a scam coin but a serious crypto project.

This move will never be forgotten. To the community, if you all trust a single dev so much, here is the perfect solution for you: Fork again and increase the supply such that pnosker owns 50% of all coins which he should never spend on anything and only use for staking. You will be save, forever! Have a good life.

i think the bold part needs more explanation, what other options were passed up on?

So I have some questions to ask those who clearly have an opinion to what took place. Consider the following.

1)  Since you are on these forums, it is safe to assume that you are invested in some coin(s)
2)  Say Someone or a group of individuals commit a crime (Theft), in which YOU are the victim of this crime.

Would you not be upset ? would you not feel violated ?  Since when is ok to for someone to commit a crime and let the attacker get away with ?  Would you not seek justice ?  So i guess it's ok for someone to attack a man or woman then laugh in their face and blame them?  do you not have the right to defend yourself ?

Please enlighten me
Only in the crypto world do people defend criminals.  If we can find the people who did this in take matters into our own hands and NO punishment from the law then no roll back.  But we can't so if you can protect the people you do it! I still feel for the people who got screwed from Mtgox.

How can I we or anyone promote crypto to the masses if we allow this to go on without trying to fight back.

not when the dev is just as shady as the criminals

he sent 100k's to multiple exchanges to put up sell walls to protect the price of the coins, it was psnoker on irc saying this and multiple exchange reps confirmed it. so he takes the loses and not the community. lol.

yet the majority of people didnt have access to their funds even if they wanted to sell

what a joke and scam.

hes probably too busy selling everything off at the moment to "protect" us.

meanwhile half the irc cant get access to their coins.

maybe someone should ask psnoker why he was transfering 200k coins to bittrex during yesterdays original outage... it was clearly stated on irc.

The SEC should be alerted to this as its more of a HYIP than a decentralized crypto currency at this point.
17  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: moving wallet from blockchain to ??? on: May 24, 2014, 07:06:12 AM
laptop is virgin never connected to internet... so yes

as far as paper wallets i wanted to avoid those because i would like to put a few backups away in different locations long term so i would not have quick access to or be able to supervise them on a regular basis. This is why i purchased a couple ironkeys with Hardware/sodtware encryption.

Armory i looked into but seems a little complicated having to run multiple softwares/updates....

as you guys can see im a a little  confused on how exactly this cold storage / offline storage works....

if anyone can point me to a good guide or how to would be greatly appreciated.
