1  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [VRC] | VeriCoin | POS-NSDI | VeriBit | VeriSend | VeriSMS | SuperNET Core on: November 17, 2014, 06:18:10 AM
I had high hopes for VeriCoin and its developers. Unfortunately, a combination of bad luck, false promises, poor decisions and associations with shady characters has doomed this coin. This project should be a valuable lesson learned for the entire cryptocommunity, especially PoS coins.

I had close to 1M VRC at one point and held on to them through the Mintpal hack because I believed in the developers, but it eventually became obvious to me that there was really nothing innovative on the future roadmap that isn't already provided by the Bitcoin ecosystem. At that point, I decided to slowly start selling off my coins at a huge loss, because I didn't think the price would ever recover. By the looks of things, it appears that I was correct on that point.

On top of that, the developers seem to be speaking about this coin as if it's a side project now, which would explain why the development process has slowed down quite a bit. My guess is they are probably busy with their real life responsibilities and don't have as much time or interest to give to this project anymore. The subreddit is also a ghost town. This is the story of nearly every single dead alt coin that has existed.

I feel the decision to close down the official thread was also a mistake. As you could expect, the VeriTalk forums are a constant circle jerk of fanboys who don't offer any critique to the developers. All I can say is, you get what you ask for.

I've decided to sell the last of my coins off over the past few weeks. I wish the developers the best of luck, but I think all of the altcoins are facing a grim future. Moving out of VeriCoin and back into Bitcoin over the past few months is probably one of the better decisions that I've made. I recovered most of the losses I sustained by investing in VeriCoin.

If the bag holders in this thread are planning on SuperNET saving the day, think again. My opinion is that all eyes will be on Bitcoin going forward.

This is another step forward for VRC and other altcoins, but I'm surprised no one has asked the most obvious question yet.

What are the fees of this card?

This will ultimately determine if anyone will use it or not.

Why if you've been around so long are you using a noob account ?

I've never spent much time on this forum up until about a month ago. In fact, I only registered here to ask a linux question regarding the VRC wallet and then I ended up sticking around to read more. Prior to that, I only used the trollbox on BTCE from time to time, which is an exchange with a terrible "community". I've found this forum to be slightly more pleasant.

Well. I am off to go unload the couple bitcoin my buddy bought already of VRC already. He is fairly dissapointed. I thought telling a friend would be a good idea. Now its just stress on my back and losing him money! The past few days I tried to reassure him several times. But now I think maybe I am making up stories to myself to make me feel good about the investment here.

Really appreciate all the work everyone does. I am going to be a silent member of the community from now on, save my sanity.

Will leave my personal money in, because I don't see many better investments in all the shit crypto investments lately. But I am not going to keep relaying info to a buddy, daily when its been nothing but a stress so far. Nor will I continue to post in here.

I'll prob lose a few bitcoins with this investment but that's okay. I guess I am an idiot for believing in something that maybe wasn't meant to be.

VeriCoin has only been around for two months. If all you want are constant price increases, then you're going to be disappointed no matter which altcoin you choose. They all are going down right now.

I've only made three bets in the crypto world, Bitcoin (2012), Litecoin (2013) and Peercoin (2013). All three were big winners for me. I invested in Litecoin, because I liked the idea of decentralized mining and faster transaction times than Bitcoin. I liked Peercoin because of its implementation of Proof of Stake, which many people said would never work. I was one of the largest holders of Peercoin for almost a year before people finally started to invest in it. I was fortunate enough to ride the wave on all of these coins during the 2013/2014 price increase.

However, after a while, I eventually noticed a couple things that made me rethink my investments. One of them was that the development process seemed extremely slow with Litecoin/Peercoin in regards to getting it in the hands of casual users. In early 2014, it became apparent that more and more alts were arriving with new features and Bitcoin was attracting a lot of venture capital money to build an infrastructure around it. Being familiar with software lifecycles, I knew it would only be a matter of time before Litecoin/Peercoin would be replaced if they didn't innovate fast enough. As an example, it has been almost two years and I still don't think Peercoin (Sunny King) or the community has developed a mobile wallet yet. How can you attract people to your coin if it's not easy for them to access it?

The other major problem I recognized, which might sound silly to some people, is that the marketing for all of these altcoins was nonexistent. Most cryptocoins seem to be developed with the idea of catering to only the tiny cult-like crypto community, not the casual user. Any casual person with limited knowledge of technology is going to struggle greatly with any virtual currency and they don't really care about technical details. Bitcoin is closing this gap thanks to all of the venture capital money and apps being built on top of it, similar to when TCP/IP first came around. Most altcoins don't seem to have this luxury.

Between those fundamentals and the chart patterns I was watching (I'm a long time FX trader), I decided that it would be best to sell off both of my positions in early 2014 and hold on to cash. I didn't see a reason to hold any virtual currency outside of Bitcoin at that point, unless someone had a better way to market themselves to casual users. It ended up being a good decision, because most coins lost the vast majority of their value over the following months. I told myself that I would just make small investments in Bitcoin on dips and keep everything else in cash.

Fast forward almost six months later and VeriCoin arrives on the scene. I took one look at it and said, who cares, its just another altcoin. But, the more I read about the developers and their vision, the more convinced I was that this coin had the potential to succeed. A coin is only as good as its developers and they seemed to be the first ones that "got it". If you want your coin to be successful, you need to get it into the hands of the casual masses. How do you do that? By offering more services and using better marketing. The VeriCoin developers seem to understand the direction that Bitcoin is headed with it's third party services/feature infrastructure. Instead of doing everything that way, they've decided to incorporate as much as they can into one place, the wallet, which I believe is the right way to go. As long as the developers continue down this path, then it greatly increases the potential for adoption outside of the crypto community.

If you can find a service-based coin with long term potential and better developers than this one, please let me know, because I certainly haven't found one.

Hi Everybody new wallet is up!

Thanks for hanging in there with us through this, quite a day.  We successfully thwarted the theft of coins and prevented an attack on the blockchain.  Go here to download the new wallet: www.vericoin.info

Backup your wallet.dat first before proceeding, it's location is listed below for your system.

Windows:
We recommend deleting everything but wallet.dat in your username\appdata\roaming\VeriCoin folder and running the default installer settings.  This will load up the full block and you will be on the splash screen for 10-15 minutes while it loads at the blockchain data.

Mac:
We recommend deleting everything but wallet.dat from user/library/applicationsupport/vericoin and putting these two files in this directory as well: http://www.vericoin.info/downloads/vericoin.conf http://www.vericoin.info/downloads/bootstrap.dat
You will sit at the splash screen for 10-15 minutes while the whole blockchain loads up.

Thanks for your hard work. When I go to compile the Linux wallet, it gives me an error about being unable to find the QtWebKit. Even after I install libwebkit-dev it still doesn't work. This is the same machine as the previous Linux wallet, so I know all of the dependencies are there. Any ideas?

I think we need to wait for a technical explanation of what went wrong before we can draw any conclusions. VRC is still very new and enough coins were stolen to greatly affect the community, so the developer was stuck between a rock and a hard place on this one.

The problem is that VRC will now always be associated with this hard fork. The developers need to be clear going forward on what their response will be in the event of future hacks on Mintpal.

The roadmap of this coin still looks great compared to other alts and I think this will be remembered as a minor setback. I am hoping the coin gets dumped so I can purchase more.

Im having issues with the wallet .

Cant sync and it says something about Invalid check point found . Displayed transactions may not be correct! You may need to upgrade , or notify developers .

What should i do ?

Go to %appdata%/vericoin and delete everything but wallet.dat

I guess my question isn't that much important anymore, isn't Sad  i had a lot of trust in this coin, but if i'm just being ignored while i'm asking a normal investors question i guess something is going on. Time to dump.

I think that's a good plan. You should get out of VRC immediately, because your weak hands clearly can't handle the swings of this coin or any other alt. Expecting a new feature every other day is not rational. No other crypto has promised as much as the VRC team has and still delivered on it. It makes me laugh when people on this forum criticize them for being a day late on their promises, because they possess no understanding regarding the complexity of software development or how crypto works in general. They just want to see the price rise to fulfill their greedy "get rich quick" desires and that's all they care about. This is why most day traders and weak hands end up losing in the end. The fact that the VRC dev team has accomplished as much as they have in such a short span of time is nothing short of a technical miracle. This coin has more features in it than all other alts put together and they still want to develop more. It's hard to believe that they can offer anything else at this point. Their communication and constant interaction within the crypto community alone is worth more than most other alts out there. Good luck finding a better altcoin. I'm sure they'll be happy to hold your hand.

Can anyone give me basic instructions on how to install the VeriCoin Linux wallet on Mint 17 (Ubuntu)? The instructions on Github are confusing and I'm fairly new to this process.

I installed QT Creator and then opened the vericoin-qt.pro file, but now it's saying that it's using an invalid kit "Desktop" to parse the project. It's asking me to add a kit and I don't know where to find it. I assumed I'd just be able to hit "Build", but I clearly don't know what I'm doing.

I also tried doing it the other way by installing these packages:

apt-get install qt4-qmake libqt4-dev build-essential libboost-dev libboost-system-dev \
    libboost-filesystem-dev libboost-program-options-dev libboost-thread-dev \
    libssl-dev libdb4.8++-dev

However, libdb4.8++-dev apparently "has no installation candidate" and won't install. I found it online and installed it manually after I installed the other dependencies. When I go to run "qmake" and then "make", I'm uncertain what to specify with it, so this doesn't work either.

I'm sure my issues are coming from my lack of understanding when it comes to building packages.

Try this

sudo apt-get install qt4-qmake libqt4-dev build-essential libboost-dev libboost-system-dev libboost-filesystem-dev libboost-program-options-dev libboost-thread-dev libssl-dev libdb++-dev libminiupnpc-dev libboost-all-dev libqrencode-dev git

That worked instantly! I can now open the VeriCoin-qt. Thank you!
