Syscoin 2.1 Introduces Foundation for Blockchain Based Identity Platform

We’re continuing to test Syscoin 2.1 internally and although we’re very close to releasing Syscoin 2.1 to mainnet, we’ve been able to implement some major feature improvements – the biggest of which is the foundation for a human-readable Blockchain based identity system.

ALIASES AS A FOUNDATION FOR BLOCKCHAIN BASED IDENTITY PLATFORM

Aliases are central to all Syscoin operations. We’ve upgraded Aliases to pave the way for a Blockchain Based Identity platform. Soon you’ll be able to store everything related to your identity tied to your Syscoin Alias – from delivery address and Twitter handles to PGP signatures and passwords. How much data to include is completely up to the user. This addition will allow additional functionality in the future, from signing messages with your Alias, automatically sharing your newly created listings to Twitter and Facebook, to a full range of interoperability with other online services such as YouTube or Imgur, providing further identity value. All of this information is encrypted in the same manner as your coins and stored securely on the blockchain.

In Syscoin 2.0 sending funds to “Dan” vs. “dan” result in funds going to two different addresses and different Aliases on the network. This has not only confused users but has led many to reserve Aliases unnecessarily to try to mitigate case-confusion. As of Syscoin 2.1 we’ll be applying domain-name like rules to Syscoin Aliases, allowing only unique case-insensitive names. We’ve changed the Alias renewal model to be more like internet domain names; Aliases can now be renewed up to five years at any time. You’ll now be able to send coins and encrypted messages to a user’s Alias using any case formatting you desire, the recipient will always be the same. For example “Dan” v “dan” will go to the same recipient – the one who owns lowercase version of the Alias “dan” (rather than two different recipients as in 2.0). All new aliases in 2.1 will be entirely lowercase, any existing non-lowercase Aliases will be blocked from updates and will eventually expire and have their data pruned from the blockchain using another one of Syscoin 2.1’s new features aimed at reducing blockchain bloat.

DETAILS ON LATEST SYSCOIN 2.1 ENHANCEMENTS

The community has been asking questions about certain new features coming in 2.1 which we wanted to explain in more depth, as well as share more new features:

  • Currency Editing – Currently in Syscoin 2.0 you cannot modify the currency your item is priced in once it is listed. After 2.1 is released you will be able to modify the currency your item is priced in if you made a mistake in your initial listing or if you simply want to price it in a different currency.
  • “Wanted” Section – If you have an item or service that you are looking to buy but can’t find it on the marketplace you can list it in the “wanted” section. The “wanted” section will have multiple subcategories such as “Wanted Services” or “Wanted Items” etc. If a seller matching your needs sees your “wanted” listing they can simply create an offer fitting your “wanted” request and get into contact with you via the Syscoin encrypted messaging service to proceed with the transaction.
  • (NEW) Certificate Categories – Just like offers can now be categorized, certificates can be categorized as well. We’ve identified some valuable alternative use cases for Syscoin digital certificates and allowing them to have a category will allow us (and/or the larger development community) to explore these value-adding use cases. If you choose to sell a categorized certificate, the offer listing will automatically be added to the same category as a convenience but users can modify this before submitting the offer to the network if they feel the offer should for some reason be in a different category than the certificate.

We’re internally testing the final version of Syscoin 2.1, with all the above mentioned features fully completed. Testing is looking good, we’ll be opening the testing up to our larger internal advisory committee this weekend before determining if we’re ready to set a hardfork block and plan the release to main net.

It’s been an extremely productive month following the release of the Syscoin 2.1 public beta [1]. We’ve been added to the Coinomi wallet which gives Android users the ability to send, receive and hold Syscoin on their Android mobile devices, Syscoin has been added to Brave New Coin’s services, Livecoin exchange and we’ve also received confirmation that Syscoin will be added to Bittylicious, a UK based fiat gateway and exchange, in the near future.

Development has been speeding along as well. With the help of the community we’ve been able to identify and fix bugs and implement changes that improve the overall Syscoin user experience. We’ve identified two more features; an in-wallet wanted section and currency editing. These will add further value to the Syscoin platform and will take a few days to finalize. While they are being worked on we wanted to share the latest improvements by releasing the a new Syscoin 2.1 public beta 2. Beta 2 includes the major fixes and user experience updates that we’ve completed so far. We want to release to mainnet as soon as is reasonably possible, targeting the first week of August timeframe. Progress on our Blockmarket initiative has been moving along extremely well, we’ll have a more detailed updates on that in a separate post.

To use the latest beta you will need to delete any/all existing beta files – including the app/exe and the Syscoin testnet data directory; Syscoin.conf remains the same as with the first beta. If you discover issues we want to hear about them and you can submit them either via slack #bugs channel or our Github issues page. We’re excited to be one step closer to releasing 2.1 to mainnet with all its huge new features and look forward to sharing what we’ve been working with Blockmarket very soon!

Download the Syscoin 2.1 beta 2 using the links below. You’ll need to use this syscoin.conf, which will only connect to testnet. If you have an existing syscoin.conf from beta 2 there is no need to change it, if not please back it up prior to participating in the beta.

You must delete any/all pre-existing Syscoin 2.1 beta 1 testnet data (the testnet3 folder entirely) before you can run/use Syscoin 2.1 beta 2 properly.

请使用以下的 syscoin.conf。这会使syscoin链接到测试网。
请在使用公测之前先备份旧的syscoin.conf!

We’ve been hard at work over the past week, Blockmarket is really starting to shape up! Testing has continued and we’re excited to release the Syscoin 2.1 public beta to allow the community to participate in that effort and help us vigorously test this ground-breaking software. While our focus has been testing the 2.1 release and solving blockchain bloat, we find we are also working on a number of other efforts mentioned in previous development updates: company setup, Chinese community outreach, and Blockmarket development are all moving along in parallel with the testing effort.

The focus of today’s update is the Syscoin 2.1 beta, which we’re releasing to the public today. The Syscoin 2.1 beta brings a number of new features, as well as bug fixes to improve the overall stability of the network. We encourage users to download the beta and try it out for themselves, the beta is locked to testnet and as such cannot be used with “real” Syscoins yet. We have plans for a blog post this week to dive into some of the highlights of what’s new in Syscoin 2.1, as well as a more technical blog post outlining what the “Data Pruning” feature means for the platform and how it will improve scalability long term. Here’s a quick rundown of the new features:
  • Safe Search/Item Moderation (optional, on by default in team-provided wallet)
  • Search Pagination
  • Default Alias
  • Message Ordering, Escrow Ordering
  • Special pruning mechanism designed specifically for Syscoin services, solving the bloat issue
  • Easy Unlock for Encrypted Wallets
  • Archive / Hide Sold Out Item
  • Item Geolocation
  • Suggested Categories
  • Search within Category
  • Ability to hide completed/refunded/expired escrows
  • Feedback/Ratings System
  • Wanted to buy item listings

There are some known bugs we’re still working to resolve and we wanted to make these known before they grab the beta so they know to look out for these. If you find other issues please check our github issues list to make sure its not something we’re already working on and if you don’t see it there please add it. Here are the top priority/most critical bugs we’re working on:
Blockchain pruning impacting/breaking escrow operations after pruning
Fit and finish of themes
Private items are visible in search
Improved Versioning

To make the pruning feature easier to test, the expiry time of all services in this beta has been set to 24hrs. This means that any Syscoin services you create on testnet will expire and be pruned/removed 24hrs after the last edit to that entity. For aliases you/other members of the network should be able to re-purchase them after expiry.

To keep an eye on our progress towards closing out all of the remaining issues on Syscoin 2.1 before public release you can alway check the Syscoin 2.1 milestone on GitHub.

Download the Syscoin 2.1 beta using the links below. You’ll need to use this syscoin.conf, which will only connect to testnet. If you have an existing syscoin.conf please back it up prior to participating in the beta.

Syscoin 2.1 UPDATE

We’ve been working hard to test Syscoin 2.1 with a target release date of this Sunday, June 26th. Syscoin 2.1 brings major long term scalability improvements to Syscoin which must be tested thoroughly to ensure the network continues to operate in a stable manner. Testing has been moving along well but we have discovered some bugs and usability issues that we want to address before releasing 2.1 to mainnet.

The recent attack on the DAO was a harsh reminder of what can happen when proper testing/security is ignored in a rush to release. As such, we’re taking the necessary steps to ensure Syscoin 2.1 is solid before we release it. We estimate it should only require another week of testing before it can be released, we’re also going to use that time to ensure that exchanges and miners are ready for this mandatory update. We also plan on releasing some blog posts this week detailing the new features in 2.1, and the technical details of the scalability improvements which solve the “blockchain bloat” problem.

We don’t want to leave people empty handed as we finish off testing! To give people an idea of what’s coming we’ll be releasing Syscoin 2.1 as a beta locked to testnet (meaning you cannot use it with “real” coins from mainnet yet). Using the beta the community will be able to explore the new functionality and will also help us to further shake any bugs out. This change means that the beta will be released this Sunday, the 26th with the full mainnet release now slated for next weekend, Sunday July 3. These changes do not impact the Blockmarket Lite timeline, it will still be released shortly after 2.1 goes to mainnet. The roadmap has been updated to reflect these updates.

Development Update #3 – June 12, 2016

We’ve made a lot of progress on development over the last week and we’ve updated the roadmap to try and get everything in place in time for certain Microsoft events with as little change to existing release target as possible.

As mentioned last week resources in terms of developers are scarce and we don’t want to spend a lot of SYS dev funds at these prices to on board something equivalent to full time help. We are talking with a few developers we’ll try to leverage as supplemental support but in planning we’re still operating as if its just the two internal devs we have at present. These same resources are needed to setup the company entity which we need in order to proceed expanding our relationship with Microsoft. We had some tough decisions to make because the Microsoft conference is coming very soon, and Syscoin 2.1 is also very close to being ready for release with several new features.

To best utilize resources we’ve decided to scope back the Blockmarket release for June to a pretty simple “lite” version that simply shows balance, and allows users to send and receive in the same simple login/setup/deployment framework that the full Blockmarket will use. We’re doing this just to satisfy the Microsoft requirements in time for the conference. The plan was a full Blockmarket beta for June. Because a beta won’t work for our Microsoft endeavors we’ve scaled back to a lite, non-beta release for June with the full release still planned for late July as previously planned. With the additional resources gained from scoping back the June release of Blockmarket we’ll increase the testing effort behind Syscoin 2.1, and be able to get the company setup. We still plan on releasing Blockmarket lite to the public sometime before the end of June. This plan gives us the best shot of being part of the MSFT conference, the requirements of which we just learned about last week.

Assuming all testing goes smoothly on Syscoin 2.1 we’ll be releasing that June 26th, 2016. Syscoin 2.1 will be a mandatory update and we’ll coordinate with exchanges and miners around its release. By holding off on the full Blockmarket release until after Syscoin 2.1 we’re also maximizing efficiencies as it relates to Blockmarket dev- because the new Syscoin release introduces many new commands and modifies some existing commands if we release Blockmarket ahead of 2.1 we’d incur work just weeks later on the back end of the 2.1 release to deal with these changes. The full Blockmarket release is targeted for July 24th, 2016 and will include some of the features introduced in 2.1. We’re not sure if there will be a beta of the full Blockmarket at the moment- we’ll reasses our resources in July to make that decision.

These hard target dates allow us to better coordinate our PR efforts. In conjunction with our PR partners we’re already working on marketing around 2.1 and the full Blockmarket release- we’ll be running our own efforts in parallel with those of our PR partners to ensure the best results; Blockmarket being the larger of the two releases/efforts. All of these updates have already been applied to our roadmap.

sorry for the dumb question but wasnt syscoin scrypt before?

Yes. We switched to SHA-256 to be merge-mined with Bitcoin to give us a more solid and scaleable network. It also gave us the ability to offer Bitcoin as a payment option in our decentralized marketplace.

If I understand well, the sell offer remains live forever unless the seller puts its down himself, right?

The offer is technically always there, however when the quantity goes to 0 it will no longer be visible publicly (so if you sell out, you can just change the quantity when your stock replenishes). To hide an offer you can either change the quantity to 0 or change it to a private offer.

Is there a way to browse your market from a browser (without downloading SYS client) ?

That is exactly what the upcoming Blockmarket is for.

Team notes March 6, 2016

Syscoin 2.0 Public Beta

• Most bugs reported with Syscoin 2.0 Public Beta v1 have been fixed. 10+ bugs fixed this week.
• Team is internally testing Public Beta v2 to verify bug fixes prior to rolling this out to larger public audience
• Additional bugfixes being implemented while team internally tests current fixes
• Discussing partnerships inside the merchant space and outside the merchant space more targeted at exposing the Syscoin 2.0 platform to a wider audience and enabling larger use cases.
• Team now running 2 testnets- 1 internal and 1 public beta
• Price pegging script about to be turned on public testnet so entire ecosystem will now be under test.
• Working on additional updates to wallet GUI/graphics to make experience better for users and also improve display at lower resolutions
• Planning Blockmarket 2.0 improvements which will begin immediately following the completion of the peg-script rollout, looking to enable Blockmarket as a full 1-click ecommerce solution so users don't even need to interface with the QT wallet.
• eBay/Etsy integration will come after Blockmarket is updated, and once they are developed we'll move to larger-scale ecommerce plugins such as Magento, Shopify et al.

Marketing/Communication
• Sorting through 45+ merchant inquiries from merchant portal site- reaching out to legitimate merchants to begin process of preparing inventory for mainnet quick-setup and incentivized listings
• Discussing press releases and marketing plans as we get closer to mainnet release. Speaking with some possible PR agencies- waiting for some feedback before we can set a hard internal budget.
• Reaching out to apps on iOS and Android app stores - have reached out to several for possible inclusion in upcoming releases or updates that include SYS as a currency.
• Fixed some incorrect information and links on main website
• Updating graphics to be accurate within the context of Syscoin 2.0 as many new services have been added and existing services have changed
• FAQ being updated to cover gaps from initial beta launch
• Completing interview from blog interested in more info on SYS 2.0, article should be public soon
• Outreach to existing exchanges is complete, miners are ready to go whenever- they just want to know the block, still finalizing w existing service partners and payment processors.
•Outreach to new exchanges and services is ongoing- some have already replied and confirmed SYS 2.0 will be added on launch, others we're still waiting for replies.
• Working to source a contact that speaks Chinese natively for interfacing with both Chinese investors and current and existing Chinese exchanges and service partners.
• Team will start marketing SYS more on Twitter/Trollbox and BCT to those interested in crypto technologies that may be similar to Syscoin 2.0 and providing them with the information they need to make a proper investment decision.
